We got a call a while back from a guy who splits his time between a street car build and helping crew a regional race team out of Iowa City. He needed a lift that could hold a car steady for transmission service between events, and he wanted to know exactly what was under his shop floor before he spent a dime. That conversation turned into the decision tree we walk every customer through now.

Start With the Budget, Not the Brand
Every decision tree we build starts the same place: what’s the number you’re comfortable spending, all-in, including install and freight? We ask this before we ever talk brand or capacity because it changes the whole conversation. A shop doing transmission service on street cars and the occasional race build doesn’t need the same 2 post car lift as a dealership running twelve bays. If your budget is tight, an asymmetric two-post in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range covers almost everything you’ll roll onto it, transmission pans and all.
Once the budget’s set, we look at what else eats into it — delivery distance, whether there’s a forklift on site to unload, and whether the shop has a pit or flat concrete. We’ve had customers assume the quoted price includes moving a lift across town or up a grade, and it doesn’t always. Nailing the budget number first, before falling in love with a specific lift, keeps the rest of the decision tree honest and keeps you from getting a surprise change order two weeks before your car needs to be back on the track.
Slab Thickness Is the Real Gatekeeper
This is where most of our Iowa City conversations actually live. A 2 post car lift puts enormous point-loading on four small anchor patterns, and older shop floors — especially ones poured decades ago for a garage that never expected a lift — often don’t have the thickness to hold it safely. We generally want to see a minimum of 4 inches of structurally sound concrete, and closer to 4.5 to 5 inches for anything in the 10,000 lb-plus range or for shops doing heavy repeated cycling like transmission service all week.
We also ask about rebar or wire mesh in the pour. Rebar isn’t automatically a problem, but it changes how our installers anchor the columns — sometimes we shift the footprint a few inches to avoid drilling straight through a rebar grid, since that can weaken both the anchor and the slab around it. If nobody has a set of as-built drawings, we send someone out to core-test the slab before we finalize a quote. It’s a small step that saves everyone from finding out the hard way, mid-install, that the floor can’t take it.
Configuration: Symmetric, Asymmetric, or Overhead
Once the slab is confirmed, we get into configuration. Symmetric two-post lifts split the vehicle weight evenly and are common in general repair bays. Asymmetric lifts angle the columns so doors swing open unobstructed and you get easier entry and exit — most of the shops we work with doing driveline and transmission work prefer this layout because techs are in and out of the cab constantly.
Then there’s the overhead beam question. We had a customer near West Liberty specifically request a 9,000 lb two-post with an overhead beam because his ceiling height and bay layout made a floor-plate style lift less practical. Overhead-beam configurations route the crossbar above the vehicle instead of at ankle height, which some crews prefer for keeping the floor clear of trip hazards when they’re wheeling a transmission jack in and out. It’s a preference call, not a right-or-wrong call, but it needs to happen before the anchors go down.
Capacity: Don’t Undersize for the Occasional Big Job
We always ask what’s the heaviest vehicle that will ever go on this lift, not just what’s typical. A crew chief running a lighter tube-frame car day to day might still occasionally need to lift a heavier tow vehicle or a trailer-loaded truck. Sizing a 2 post car lift for the average job instead of the worst-case job is one of the most common regrets we hear about later. Going up one capacity tier during the quote stage costs far less than swapping the whole lift out in two years.
We also factor in adjustability. Some columns in this class don’t have adjustable height and need extra ceiling clearance when you stand them up during install — that’s a detail that trips up more shops than you’d think, especially in older buildings with lower trusses. A model with adjustable height columns gives you more forgiveness if your ceiling is tighter than ideal, and it’s worth the small upcharge if there’s any doubt.
Power Requirements Nobody Thinks to Ask About
We get this question constantly, and it’s a good one: does the lift run on a standard 120V 15A outlet or does it need 220V service? Most two-post lifts in this weight class are built for 220V single-phase power, and shops that assume they can just plug into an existing wall outlet end up scrambling for an electrician mid-install. If your Iowa City shop building is older or was converted from something other than automotive use, get an electrician to confirm your panel capacity before your install date, not the week of.
We send spec sheets on request for exactly this reason — power draw, phase, amperage, all of it — because it’s cheaper to solve on paper than it is to solve with the lift sitting half-bolted to your new slab. This step alone has saved several of our customers a delayed install date.
Lead Time and Install Logistics
Lead times on a 2 post car lift can run anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple months depending on the model and current backlog, so we tell customers to lock in their decision tree early if they’ve got a season or a deadline in mind. We also ask upfront whether there’s a forklift on site for unloading — if there isn’t, we bring our own equipment, but it changes the quote and sometimes the scheduling window.
Distance matters too. We’ve quoted installs anywhere from a few miles from our Ames base out to jobs requiring a longer haul, and freight cost scales with that distance. Being upfront about your address, your ceiling height, and your access (garage door width, any stairs, tight turns) when you first call us means the quote you get is the quote you actually pay, not one full of change orders discovered on install day.
Putting the Whole Tree Together
By the time we’re done walking a customer through all six branches — budget, slab, configuration, capacity, power, and logistics — the right 2 post car lift for their shop is usually obvious. For our Iowa City crew chief, that meant an asymmetric two-post in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range, verified 4.5-inch slab with a rebar layout we could work around, an overhead beam to keep the floor clear for the transmission jack, and 220V service confirmed before the install date was even booked.
That’s the value of running the decision tree in order instead of backwards. Too many shops pick a lift off a spec sheet first and then discover the slab, the power, or the ceiling won’t cooperate. We’d rather spend twenty extra minutes on the phone up front than show up to a job site with a lift that has nowhere safe to sit.
