What the equalization cable actually does
On a chain-drive or cable-drive 2 post car lift, the equalization cable ties the two carriages together so they rise and fall in lockstep even though only one column carries the hydraulic cylinder. If those cables are stretched, worn, or unevenly tensioned, one carriage will lead and the other will lag. That mismatch is exactly what the Iowa City alignment tech had noticed. On an alignment lift, even an eighth of an inch of carriage travel offset shows up as a bad reading.
Cable break strength on a typical commercial 2 post car lift is between about 10,000 and 14,000 pounds per cable, depending on manufacturer and model. That is the ultimate load, not the working load. Working load is usually a fraction of that with a safety factor built in. When cables show visible fraying or broken strands, they are already past their working life and need replacement immediately, not at the next service interval.
Inspection intervals from the manufacturer
Both Rotary and Challenger publish daily, weekly, monthly, and annual inspection checklists in their install and service manuals for every 2 post car lift they build. Daily is a quick visual walk-around. Weekly is a hands-on cable check. Monthly is a lubrication and tension check. Annual is a full ALI-standard inspection by a qualified technician, documented on paper, filed for insurance.
Most dealerships do the annual inspection because their insurance carrier requires it. Fewer do the monthly. Even fewer do the weekly. The Iowa City shop admitted they had not done a weekly cable check in probably a year and a half. That is not unusual, and it is not catastrophic if you catch it before failure. But it is the exact scenario that drift and offset warn you about.
Real dimensions on a typical Rotary SPOA10 cable
To give the manager real numbers, we pulled the service data on a common 10,000 pound asymmetric 2 post car lift, the Rotary SPOA10. Its equalization cables are 3/8 inch diameter aircraft-grade steel with swaged end fittings, and the length depends on rise height, usually around ten to twelve feet from anchor to anchor. Cable break strength on the 3/8 spec is above 14,000 pounds per cable.
The Challenger CL10 uses a similar spec with slightly different end fittings. The two are not interchangeable across brands even though the base dimensions look similar. Always match the exact part number for your 2 post car lift model. We stock both and can cross-reference by model or serial number in about five minutes on the phone.
Signs your cables need replacement
Six warning signs. First, visible broken wire strands anywhere along the cable length. Second, kinks or flat spots. Third, corrosion or heavy rust. Fourth, uneven carriage travel where one side leads. Fifth, popping or snapping sounds during a lift cycle. Sixth, the safety locks engaging unevenly on the two columns. Any single sign is enough to justify a replacement.
The Iowa City shop had signs one and four. The tech pulled the covers and confirmed visible fraying near the top sheave on the driver-side cable. That is a normal wear location because the cable bends most sharply there. We shipped a new full cable set for the SPOA10 the next day and our service crew handled the change during a Saturday morning downtime window.
Replacement interval — what we actually recommend
Manufacturer guidance is often written as “as needed based on inspection.” That is fair but not actionable. Our operational rule for a high-cycle commercial 2 post car lift like a dealership alignment bay is: budget for cable replacement every five to seven years regardless of visible condition. Cables that pass every visual check can still be at end of fatigue life on the internal strands, and internal fatigue does not always show up on the outside until failure day.
Home garage and hobby lifts running one lift cycle a week can go longer, ten years or more. But do not assume dealership duty cycles are the same. A dealership lift may see fifteen to twenty cycles a day, five days a week. That is 4,000 cycles a year. In seven years that is 28,000 cycles on a cable rated for a design life in that same neighborhood. Change proactively.
Anchors and hoses come with cables
While cables are off, inspect and often replace two other things. Anchor bolts on the columns, because torque loss over years of vibration is real, and because Iowa freeze-thaw cycles can crack the concrete around anchors. Hydraulic hoses, because rubber degrades from ozone and heat regardless of use. A 2 post car lift that gets new cables and old hoses will still fail you in a year.
