The single most common reason a brand-new 2 post car lift sits unused for three weeks after delivery is electrical — not concrete, not freight damage, not a missing arm pin. We had a body shop foreman on the east side of Iowa City call us last spring, mid-restoration on a ’68 fastback, columns already anchored and plumb, and no way to turn the thing on. His shop had 240V single-phase in the panel but the nearest usable circuit was a 30-amp welder receptacle 40 feet away on the wrong wall. That is a solvable problem, but it is a lot cheaper to solve on paper than after the anchors are set. Single-Phase vs. Three-Phase: What Your Shop Actually Has

Nearly every restoration shop, hobby garage, and small independent in the Iowa City area runs 208-240V single-phase. That is the default we assume when a customer calls, and it is what the vast majority of power units ship configured for. Three-phase shows up in older industrial buildings, converted warehouses along the river corridor, and dealership service bays — and when it is available, it is genuinely better: smoother motor start, lower amp draw per leg, less heat, longer motor life. But three-phase service is expensive to bring in if you do not already have it, and the utility may quote you a number that dwarfs the cost of the lift itself.

Here is the practical decision tree we walk customers through. Open the panel, look at the main breaker and the service label. If you see two hot legs, you are single-phase. Three hots means three-phase, and you still need to know whether it is 208V wye or 240V delta, because the motor nameplate has to match. We have seen a shop wire a 230V single-phase unit to a 208V three-phase supply using two legs — it runs, it sounds fine, and it slowly cooks the motor windings over eighteen months. If you are unsure, photograph the panel label and the existing motor tags and send them to us. It takes us two minutes to read and it prevents a warranty argument later.

Breaker Sizing and Wire Gauge for a 2 Post Car Lift

A 10,000 lb clear-floor column set typically uses a 2 to 3 HP power unit. On 208-240V single-phase, that pulls roughly 15 to 24 running amps depending on the motor, with a much higher inrush at startup. The manufacturer’s manual will specify the circuit — most call for a dedicated 20A or 30A breaker. Dedicated is the operative word. Sharing a circuit with an air compressor is how you end up tripping the breaker every time both start together, and how you end up with a lift that stalls halfway up with a car on it.

Wire gauge depends on distance as much as amperage. For a 30A circuit under 50 feet, 10 AWG copper is typical. Push past 75 or 100 feet and voltage drop starts robbing the motor of torque, which shows as slow lift speed and a hot power unit — at that point step up to 8 AWG. We ran into exactly this on a two-bay shop where the panel sat in a back utility room roughly 90 feet of conduit away from the bay. The owner had run 12 AWG because that is what he had on the shelf. The lift worked, sort of, and took nearly twice the rated time to reach full height. Replacing the run fixed it entirely. Get a licensed electrician to size the circuit against the actual manual for your model, not a general rule of thumb, and get it inspected. Iowa jurisdictions vary on permits for a new dedicated circuit, and Iowa City is not the place to skip that step.

Motor Placement, Disconnects, and Conduit Routing

The power unit on a clear-floor two-post mounts to one column, and you get to choose which one. That choice matters more than people expect. In a restoration bay where you are dragging welding leads, air hoses, and grinder cords across the floor all day, put the power unit on the column nearest the panel and away from your primary walk path. On overhead-beam models the hydraulic hose and equalizer cables route through the top beam, so the motor side determines hose routing too.

Code requires a means of disconnect within sight of the equipment. A lockable disconnect switch mounted on the column or the adjacent wall satisfies that and gives you real lockout/tagout capability, which matters if you have employees or apprentices. We install a fused disconnect on most commercial jobs by default. For a hobby garage a properly labeled breaker plus a nearby switch is usually acceptable, but check locally. Conduit routing is the other detail: overhead conduit drops keep the floor clear, which is the whole reason you bought a clear-floor design in the first place. Running EMT along the wall to a drop at the column costs a little more in fittings and saves you from a floor-level trip hazard forever. If you are pouring or cutting new concrete anyway, an in-floor conduit stub is the cleanest option, but it has to be planned before the pour, not after.

Restoration and Metal Work: Why the Electrical Load Adds Up

Body and restoration work is electrically hungry in a way that general maintenance is not. A 220V MIG welder, a plasma cutter, a rotary phase converter for an old lathe, a compressor cycling to keep up with DA sanders, shop heat in a January Iowa winter — all of it competes for panel capacity. The Iowa City foreman we mentioned earlier had a 100-amp subpanel feeding the whole back bay and had never done the arithmetic. Adding a lift circuit put him over on paper before he ever ran two tools at once.

Do a load calculation before you buy. Add up the nameplate amps of everything that could plausibly run simultaneously, apply the standard demand factors, and see where you land against the service size. If you are close, the answer is usually a subpanel upgrade rather than trying to squeeze a lift circuit into whatever is left. That is a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on your service and the electrician, and it is money well spent — an undersized service does not fail dramatically, it just makes everything run poorly and unpredictably. One more restoration-specific note: grinding and blasting dust is conductive and abrasive. Keep the power unit’s cooling vents clear, mount the disconnect where it will not fill with media, and blow the motor housing out with air every few months. We have replaced motors that died of nothing but accumulated metal dust.

Ceiling Height, Clear Floor, and Choosing the Right Column Style

Electrical is half the pre-install picture. The other half is the building. Overhead-beam models put the crossbar and hydraulic line above the vehicle and typically need 12 feet of clear ceiling to be comfortable — some fit under 11 feet with reduced rise. Baseplate models route the equalizer cables and hose through a low floor plate, which lets them work under a 10 or 11 foot ceiling but leaves a small ridge between the columns. We had a customer in North Dakota with a hard 139-inch height limit and no ability to go overhead; a baseplate configuration was the only realistic answer, and it worked fine for his 6,000 lb maximum vehicle.

Symmetric versus asymmetric matters for restoration work specifically. Asymmetric columns rotate slightly and shift the vehicle rearward so you can open the doors — critical when you are in and out of a car all day trimming panels or fitting glass. Symmetric handles long-wheelbase trucks better and centers the load evenly. For a shop working mostly classic cars and sedans, asymmetric is usually the better daily-driver choice. Concrete is the other gate: most manufacturers want a minimum of 4 to 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and we routinely find Iowa garage slabs that measure thinner than the owner believed. Core-drill or at minimum drill a test hole before you commit. If it comes up short, a poured footing pad under each column is a standard fix and not an expensive one.

Installation Sequence: Getting Power and Anchors in the Right Order

The order of operations on an install saves real money. What we recommend: verify concrete thickness first, then mark column positions and confirm your bay layout with the vehicles you actually work on, then have the electrician run the circuit and disconnect to the chosen column location, then set and anchor the columns, then hang the overhead or install the baseplate cover, then fill, bleed, and cycle the system. Electrical before anchors, because moving a conduit run is easier than moving a set of anchor bolts.

A few field notes from Iowa installs. Anchor bolts get torqued to the manufacturer’s spec with a real torque wrench — not by feel, and not with an impact. Shim plates get stacked under the base only up to the manual’s limit, and if you need more than that, the floor needs attention instead. Bleed the cylinders fully; trapped air is the number one cause of a lift that seems to lose height or feel spongy on the first day. Cycle the empty lift through its full travel three or four times, checking that both carriages arrive at the same height and that the safety locks engage audibly on both columns at every position. Then load it with something you do not care much about and repeat. If the carriages are not tracking together, stop and adjust the equalizer cables before you put a customer’s car in the air. What Iowa Buyers Should Budget and Where We Fit In

Straight talk on money. A capable 10,000 lb 2 post car lift from a home-and-hobby brand like BendPak or Atlas lands in the low-to-mid four figures for the equipment. Commercial-grade Rotary or Challenger columns run meaningfully higher, and they earn it in duty cycle, lock hardware, and the fact that we can still get parts for units built decades ago. Freight to eastern Iowa is a few hundred more, professional installation adds several hundred to roughly a thousand depending on site access and whether concrete work is involved, and the electrical circuit is typically a few hundred to a couple thousand from a licensed electrician.

Plenty of customers handle their own unloading and setup — we sold a unit to a guy in Missouri who had a forklift and no interest whatsoever in paying for install, and that is a perfectly reasonable path if you are mechanically competent and read the manual carefully.
