Symmetric vs Asymmetric: Which Arm Style Actually Fits Wheel Bearing Work

Symmetric arms swing out from the columns at equal angles on both ends, centering the vehicle straight down the middle. That’s the traditional layout, and it works fine for general lifting, but it puts the front door directly in line with the column, which can be a pain when you’re wrestling a heavy hub assembly or a brake caliper out and need to step in close. Asymmetric arms are offset, angled further forward and less at the rear, which shifts the vehicle’s weight distribution and opens up the front door area for easier entry and exit while you’re working.

For wheel bearing service specifically, we usually steer farm shop customers toward asymmetric two post lifts. When you’re pulling a front hub or a rear axle bearing, you want room to set up a press, swing a torque wrench, and not be climbing over a column every time. We had a caller near Sioux Center describe almost exactly this setup: a small garage, high ceiling, six inch concrete, wanting a two post lift installed for regular shop work. That’s the same profile we see constantly in rural Iowa – decent concrete, decent ceiling height, and a strong preference for a lift that doesn’t fight you during hands-on service work like bearings, brakes, and CV joints.

Ceiling Height and Bay Footprint Before You Order Anything

We ask every rural shop owner the same questions before we quote a 2 post car lift: what’s your ceiling height, what’s your bay width, and where are the doors relative to where you want the columns. A customer with 14 foot ceilings and a 36 by 48 pole barn once spent a good ten minutes on the phone with us working out footprint because he had a main 12 foot door up front and a side garage door leading to a lean-to storage area. Getting that layout right up front saves you from discovering after install day that the arms swing into a support post or the vehicle can’t clear the door with the lift raised.

Most two post lifts in the capacity range farm shops actually need will clear a 10 to 12 foot ceiling without issue, but always measure to the lowest obstruction, not just the rafters, since lighting, ductwork, and door tracks eat height fast. Bay width matters just as much for asymmetric arm swing, since the columns need enough side clearance for the arms to fully extend under a pickup frame rail or a farm truck axle. Concrete Thickness Is Not Optional Homework

Every reputable two post installer is going to ask about your slab before touching a bolt, and we’re no exception. Six inches of concrete, properly cured, is the baseline we look for on most 10,000 to 12,000 pound capacity lifts, and we’ve turned away installs on thinner or cracked slabs more than once because a lift is only as strong as what it’s anchored into. If your shop was poured for general use rather than lift use, get a straight answer from us before you commit to a purchase, because moving anchor bolts after a slab failure is a far bigger headache than delaying an install by a few weeks.

We also ask if there’s rebar and whether the pour is uniform, since a lift installed half on a thin apron and half on the main slab is asking for trouble under load – and wheel bearing work often means jacking a corner of the vehicle up further with a bottle jack while the arms hold overall weight, adding stress exactly where a weak pad will show it. If your farm shop’s concrete is original to a building that’s older than the pickups you’re servicing, it’s worth having us take a look before the lift shows up on a truck.

Forklift, Freight, and What Install Day Actually Looks Like

One question we ask almost every time a lift order comes in for a rural location: do you have a forklift or skid steer on site to unload freight. What matters more than raw capacity for bearing work is arm reach and pad configuration. You need arms that extend far enough to reach factory lift points on a full-size pickup while still clearing mud flaps, running boards, and aftermarket bumpers common on farm vehicles. We walk through pad and adapter options with every rural customer because the stock pad set on a lift doesn’t always play nice with lifted trucks or older farm equipment, and that’s a cheap fix to plan for before delivery rather than discover mid-job.

Accessories, Pads, and the Spec Sheet Most Buyers Skip

Every 2 post car lift ships with a documented accessory list, and we’ve had customers on the phone asking us to physically highlight what’s included because spec sheets can bury the details. Typically you’re getting a base set of lift pads and sometimes an alternate pad set for different vehicle heights, plus the hardware for anchoring. What’s often not included, and what wheel bearing work benefits from most, are extended or low-profile adapters that let you get pads under a lower truck frame or reach past aftermarket rock rails without gouging anything.

Maintenance and Service After the Lift Is Already in the Shop

A 2 post car lift that’s been running for a year or more without a fluid check or cable inspection is more common than you’d think, even at busy shops. For a farm shop doing regular wheel bearing work, that neglect adds up faster than on a lift used occasionally, since bearing jobs mean more weight cycling and more time spent at full height.
