Buying a 2 post car lift is the single biggest equipment decision most small shops make in their first five years, and it usually comes down to one question: do you buy new, or do you buy somebody else’s? We had that conversation last spring with an RV and trailer service shop up in the Iowa Great Lakes region — a two-bay operation that spends its summers on boat trailers, camper axles and tow-vehicle maintenance, and its winters wondering how to keep the lights on. They wanted a lift that could handle a three-quarter-ton pickup for transmission service without eating half their equipment budget. What follows is that first year, start to finish, told honestly, including the parts that did not go smoothly.

Why the used market looks better than it is

Every shop owner who has ever priced equipment has seen the same auction listing: a ten-year-old asymmetric column set, “works great, must go,” for a fraction of what a new one costs. The Iowa Great Lakes shop found three of them within a two-hour drive before they ever called us. On paper the math is brutal — a used unit at a third of new price means the lift pays for itself in a season instead of three years. We understand the appeal. We also get the phone calls eighteen months later.

Here is what the auction photo never shows you. Used columns almost never come with the original anchor bolts, and the ones still in the concrete are usually rusted and stretched. Cables and equalizer chains age by calendar year as much as by cycle count, and a lift that sat idle in an unheated barn for four winters has more corrosion inside the sheaves than one that ran daily in a heated bay. Safety lock mechanisms wear at the pawl tips where you cannot see them without pulling covers. And the single biggest problem: no data plate, no serial number, or a brand that stopped supporting parts a decade ago. We stock parts for every major brand, but we cannot conjure carriage assemblies for a lift built by a company that folded in 2009. That is the real risk in a cheap secondhand purchase — not the price, the orphan status.

What we actually tell people to look for in a used 2 post car lift

We are not against used equipment. Half the service calls we run are on lifts that changed hands at least once, and plenty of them are perfectly sound. But we have a short list we give people before they hand over cash, and it starts with the label. If the column has a legible data plate showing manufacturer, model, capacity and serial, and that manufacturer still exists, you are in reasonable shape. Rotary and Challenger units from the last twenty years are generally worth buying used because the parts pipeline is intact and we can get carriages, cables, locks and cylinders without drama.

Beyond the plate, check whether the unit carries ALI certification, look for straight columns with no gouging or crush damage at the base, and physically inspect the arm pins and restraint gears. Run the lift through a full cycle if you possibly can — listen for the locks clicking evenly on both sides, watch for a carriage that drifts down when you park it on a lock, and look at the cylinder rod for pitting. Then budget for a rebuild kit regardless of what you find. Cables, anchor bolts, seals and lock springs on a used 2 post car lift should be considered consumables at the point of purchase, not surprises later. The case for new when the shop is your livelihood

The Great Lakes shop went back and forth for three weeks. What tipped them toward new was not price at all — it was downtime. They run seasonal. From Memorial Day through Labor Day their bays are booked solid with trailer bearings, camper leveling systems and tow-vehicle service, and a lift that is out of commission for four days in July costs them more than the entire price difference between used and new. A new unit came with a manufacturer warranty, a fresh set of everything, an ALI-certified label they could show their insurance carrier, and our install with a documented first inspection.

There is a second argument that people underestimate. New equipment is specified to your building instead of to somebody else’s. The shop had eleven and a half feet of clear ceiling and a mezzanine on one wall, which ruled out most overhead-beam designs in the position they wanted. We put them on a clearfloor baseplate configuration with the crossover at the floor, which kept the drive-through open and let them lift a tall van without worrying about the shutoff bar. Buying used, they would have been fitting the building to the lift. Buying new, we fit the lift to the building. For a shop that plans to be in that space for fifteen years, that difference compounds every single day.

Concrete, ceilings and the install itself

Install day started with a hammer drill and a tape measure, the way it always does. The building was poured in the late nineties and the owner believed it was six inches. It was five and a quarter in one spot and just under five in another, which is workable but tight — most two-post manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete at minimum twenty-eight days cure, measured under the column footprint, not the average across the slab. Where we had doubts we cored a test plug. That took an extra hour and saved a conversation nobody wants to have later.

We set the columns square, checked plumb in both axes, torqued the anchors to the manufacturer’s spec with a calibrated wrench, and shimmed where the floor sloped toward the drain. Slope matters more than people expect. A quarter inch of fall across a column base means the carriage runs slightly out of true forever, and you will feel it as uneven lock engagement within a year. After the mechanical set we filled and bled the hydraulics, cycled the lift a dozen times unloaded, then loaded it with the shop’s own pickup and ran it through the full travel while watching lock timing. The whole install on that 2 post car lift took most of a day. We left them with the manual, the torque specs written on the column, and a laminated daily inspection card taped inside the door.

First real job: a transmission service on a three-quarter-ton

The first meaningful job on the new lift was a transmission fluid and filter service on a customer’s tow vehicle — a heavy three-quarter-ton with a slide-in camper’s worth of hard miles on it. That is a good stress test for a two-post, because you are working directly under the vehicle’s center of mass with a drain pan, a torque wrench and about a gallon and a half of fluid going somewhere it should not. It also exposes whether the arms were spotted correctly.

The shop learned two things that day. First, pad height matters. The truck had aftermarket rock rails that fouled the standard screw pads, so they used the stacking adapters that came with the lift, and we later sold them a taller set for the frame-on trucks they see constantly. Second, they learned to lower onto the locks before anyone got under it — a habit that sounds obvious and takes about three reminders to become automatic. On a 2 post car lift the entire safety story is the mechanical locks, not the hydraulics, and the cylinder is there to raise the load, not to hold it. Once the crew got in the rhythm of raise, lower one click onto the pawls, then work, the whole thing stopped being intimidating. They did four more transmission services that month and stopped thinking about the lift entirely, which is exactly the outcome we want.

Month six: what actually needed attention

Six months in, we came back for a checkup. Nothing had failed, but a few things had moved, and that is normal. Anchor bolts had relaxed slightly and needed re-torquing — this is the single most common thing we find on lifts under a year old, and it is why we tell people to check anchors at thirty days, ninety days, and then annually. Two of the arm restraint gears had picked up grit from trailer work and needed cleaning and lubrication. The equalizer cables had stretched a hair, which is expected as the strands seat, so we adjusted them to bring the carriages back into sync.

The hydraulic reservoir was down about a half inch, which turned out to be normal air purging out of the system rather than a leak, but we traced every fitting to be sure. We also replaced one lock cable that had been rubbing on a bracket since install — our miss, and we fixed it at no charge. That is the part of buying new from an installer that does not show up on a spec sheet. When something is off in the first year, there is a person who owns it. The framework we would give any shop deciding

After a year, here is the decision framework that shop landed on, and we think it generalizes. Buy used if the lift is a supported brand with a legible data plate, you can inspect it under power before money changes hands, you are budgeting a full consumables refresh on top of the purchase, and downtime does not directly cost you revenue. A hobbyist with a heated shop and patience is the ideal used buyer. Buy new if the equipment is a production asset, if your building has constraints that limit which configurations fit, if your insurance or your customers care about certification, or if you simply do not want to become an amateur hydraulics technician.

There is also a middle path we sell more often than either extreme: a new entry-tier unit rather than a used premium one. For a shop lifting under 10,000 pounds and running a handful of vehicles a day, a new lift at the value end of the range beats a fifteen-year-old top-shelf unit with unknown history almost every time. You get the warranty, the certification, the current lock design and the parts availability, and you skip the refresh cost.
