A heavy-duty truck shop owner near the Iowa-Missouri border called us about installing a 2 post car lift dedicated to transmission service. He runs a two-bay shop out of a converted grain equipment building south of Corydon and had been dropping automatics with a cherry picker and floor jacks. He was tired of it. Losing a full day on a transmission R&R that a properly equipped bay should knock out in three hours had cost him real revenue over the previous year. Here is the full cost breakdown of what we quoted, what he bought, and how the transmission workflow changed once the lift was working.

The building we were working with

The Corydon shop was a 40×60 pole barn with a 16-foot sidewall and two 14-foot overhead doors on the long side. The concrete was a 5-inch reinforced pour that had been in place about a decade. The building had 240 volt single-phase service from a rural cooperative and a subpanel with roughly 100 amps of spare capacity. That is a solid foundation for a heavy-duty 2 post car lift install, with one caveat: single-phase power meant we needed a converter or a motor swap for a three-phase column.

We measured the two bay footprints on the visit and confirmed we could set columns 143 inches apart with 13 feet of clear working depth in each bay. That fits an 18,000 lb column with room for the arms to swing clear at full extension. The overhead door track intrusion measured 28 inches, so we set the columns six feet back from the door line to keep the tops clear of the tracks when the doors were open.

The lift: an 18,000 lb column for a Class 4 mix

The owner’s job mix included 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups plus the occasional Class 4 chassis cab. Weights ranged from about 6,500 lb up to a hair over 14,000 lb with a service body loaded. A 12,000 lb 2 post car lift would have handled ninety percent of the work but left him marginal on the biggest chassis. We recommended the Rotary SPO18, an 18,000 lb column with a 79-inch overall lift height and the arm geometry to catch a truck frame cleanly.

The SPO18 delivered ran in the mid five figures. That was the first line on the budget and, as we told the owner up front, not the biggest line by the time everything was priced. Anyone planning an 18,000 lb 2 post car lift install for heavy-duty truck work should expect the total project to run about 1.7 to 1.9 times the sticker price on the column itself, especially in a rural building.

Phase conversion: the biggest surprise line

The SPO18 power unit runs on 208 or 240 volt three-phase power. The Corydon building had single-phase only, and utility three-phase was not economically available given the distance from the nearest three-phase primary. We quoted a rotary phase converter sized to the motor with a 40 percent overhead margin, which landed at about $3,400 delivered.

Wiring the converter and running new conduit to the lift added another day of electrician labor at roughly $1,600. All told, phase conversion added about $5,000 to the 2 post car lift project. That is a number that would not have come up in a suburban shop with three-phase already in place, and it is why we ask about electrical service on the first phone call. Rural shops on the Iowa-Missouri border almost always face this question, and being ready for the answer prevents budget surprises.

Anchors, footings, and slab prep

The Corydon slab tested clean at 5 inches with rebar visible at the saw-cut edges. That cleared the Rotary anchor spec at half-inch epoxy anchors set six inches deep. We drilled sixteen anchor holes total, epoxied and torqued to spec, and let the epoxy cure a full 24 hours before loading the lift. No footing pad required, which saved roughly $1,200 versus a slab that would have needed reinforcement.

If the slab had been thin, we would have quoted a 4×4 footing pad at each column at about $600 in materials and labor per pad. That is the kind of contingency we build into every rural 2 post car lift quote until we have a physical measurement on the slab. Any shop with unknown slab history should expect a footing conversation before we commit to an install date.

Install labor, freight, and permits

The two-day install labor for a heavy-duty 2 post car lift on the Iowa-Missouri border, including drive time from Ames, ran a flat rate in the mid four figures. That covered our two-person crew, all consumables, load testing, and the equalization adjustment that lands both columns on the same lock notch. Freight from the manufacturer to the Corydon shop added about $600 with a liftgate service because the shop did not have a forklift.

Permit costs in Wayne County were minimal. An electrical permit for the new circuit ran under $200, and no building permit was required because the lift is treated as equipment rather than construction. Adding it all up: lift, phase converter, wiring, anchors, freight, install, and permit came to roughly $52,000 for the finished 2 post car lift install.

Bay layout and transmission workflow

Once the lift was working, we walked the owner through a transmission R&R workflow that took advantage of the new column. The truck parks slightly forward of the normal pad position so the tailshaft yoke lines up with an open floor lane. That lets a full-length driveshaft slide out without arcing around a column. A transmission jack rolls in from the front, catches the pan on a cradle, and drops the unit straight down onto the shop floor.

Total cycle time on a small-block automatic dropped from a full day to about three hours. The 2 post car lift paid for itself on transmission work alone inside eight months. Nothing about that workflow is exotic. It is what any properly equipped heavy-duty bay should look like, and it was the whole reason the owner called us in the first place.

What we would tell any border-region truck shop

If you are a heavy-duty truck shop anywhere on the Iowa-Missouri border thinking about a 2 post car lift, three things are worth understanding before you shop. First, the column sticker is not the total cost. Budget 1.7 to 1.9 times that number for the full install. Second, phase conversion is likely, and it is a real line item worth planning for. Third, slab testing is not optional, and a shop that skips it is one truck at height away from a serious problem.
