2 Post Car Lift Concrete Myths for EV Shops on the Iowa-Missouri Border

An EV specialty shop owner on the Iowa-Missouri border called us with a myth we hear at least once a month: that an EV shop needs a heavier-duty 2 post car lift than a gas shop because batteries are heavy. Then he had a related concrete question — did his 5-inch slab need to be repoured for engine oil pan gasket work on the internal-combustion vehicles he still serviced alongside his EV work? We are Auto Lift Services out of Ames, and we spend a lot of time busting concrete myths and lift-capacity myths for shop owners in exactly this position. Here is the truth about a 2 post car lift for a mixed EV and ICE shop.

Myth One: EVs Need a Bigger Lift Than Gas Cars

The most common myth we hear from EV shop owners is that a Tesla Model S or a Rivian R1T needs a 12,000 or 15,000-pound 2 post car lift because the battery makes the vehicle heavy. The math does not support this. A Model S weighs about 4,700 pounds. A Rivian R1T is about 7,000. A Ford F-150 Lightning is about 6,500. A standard 10,000-pound two-post has a per-pad rating of 2,500 pounds, and the total capacity comfortably handles anything under the 10,000-pound curb weight. Even the heaviest EVs on the market are well inside a 10,000-pound lift’s envelope.

Where EV vehicles do require special attention is arm placement. The battery pack sits along the underside of the vehicle and the manufacturer publishes lift-point locations that avoid the pack. Any 2 post car lift you buy for EV work needs to have arm reach and pad geometry that accommodates those specific lift points, which are often further inboard than a traditional ICE frame rail. That is a spec check, not a capacity upgrade. We help EV shops verify arm reach against their target vehicle mix before we quote the lift, and it almost never pushes them into a heavier-capacity machine.

Myth Two: Five-Inch Concrete Is Not Enough

The border shop owner had heard from another dealer that his 5-inch slab was inadequate and he needed to repour. That is wrong. Every commercial 2 post car lift up to 12,000 pounds is rated to install on a 4-inch minimum slab at 3,000 psi. Five inches is comfortably above minimum. If the slab is properly cured and the concrete is at 3,000 psi or above, a 5-inch pour will hold a 12,000-pound lift with the correct anchors at correct torque, no repour required.

What sometimes forces a repour is not thickness but condition. A slab with visible cracking through the anchor zone, or spalling at the surface, or a mystery pour of unknown psi, can force a saw-cut and repour of the anchor pads. Those are quality problems, not thickness problems. The border shop had a clean pour from a known contractor in 2018 with mix records at 4,000 psi. We told him his concrete was ideal and any dealer telling him otherwise was either misinformed or trying to sell him a service he did not need. He installed a 10,000-pound overhead symmetric on his existing floor and has been running it for eight months without a single anchor issue.

Myth Three: Rebar Is Mandatory

Related myth: rebar is required for any 2 post car lift install. It is not. Rebar helps control slab cracking over time but does not directly affect anchor pull-out capacity when the concrete is thick enough. Manufacturer spec sheets specify slab thickness and psi. Rebar is a nice-to-have that appears in some spec sheets as a recommendation, not always a requirement. Where rebar becomes important is on marginal slabs — 4 inches at 3,000 psi is minimum, and rebar adds a safety margin on that minimum.

For the EV shop we did not require rebar because the slab was 5 inches at 4,000 psi. That is a substrate strong enough to hold anchors without rebar reinforcement. If a shop is installing on a 4-inch marginal pour with no rebar, we recommend either a saw-cut repour of the anchor pads with rebar included or a step-down in lift capacity to reduce anchor loads. Both are valid answers. Neither requires ripping out the whole floor. The myth that rebar is universally required drives shop owners to spend money on concrete work they do not need, and it is one of the more expensive misconceptions in the two-post world.

Myth Four: Oil-Pan Work Requires a Four-Post

Engine oil pan gasket replacement is the classic case that some dealers use to push shops toward a four-post. The claim is that the engine needs to be supported while the oil pan is dropped, and that a two-post cannot do that easily. In reality, oil pan work on a 2 post car lift is standard practice in every commercial shop we serve. The technique uses an engine support bar or a transmission jack under the oil pan itself, both of which are standard shop tools. The lift is not what supports the engine — a jack stand or support fixture is. The lift just gives you access.

What a two-post gives you that a four-post does not is unrestricted wrench access to the front subframe area. On a four-post the front tires are sitting on the ramps directly under where you need to work. On a two-post the wheels hang free and the entire front subframe is accessible from either side. For oil pan gasket work — especially on the ICE vehicles this shop still serviced alongside its EV work — a two-post is the correct choice. The four-post argument is a preference, not a technical requirement, and any dealer presenting it as a technical requirement is not telling the whole story.

Myth Five: You Have to Buy Aluminum-Specific Arms

Some manufacturers sell aluminum-body-specific arm attachments for a 2 post car lift, and salespeople sometimes present these as required equipment for shops working on Rivians, Model 3s, and F-150 Lightnings. In most cases they are not required. Standard rubber-padded arm pads with a fabric protective pad on top will lift an aluminum-body vehicle without damage if the tech places the pads on the manufacturer’s published lift points. What causes damage is not the pad material but pad placement off the designated lift point.

Where dedicated pads or adapters help is on specific vehicles with recessed lift points that need a shorter pin to reach. Rotary and Challenger both publish adapter kits for Model S, Model X, and Rivian applications. Those adapters are inexpensive and worth having for a shop that services those vehicles regularly. But they are not a lift purchase requirement. If a dealer tells you that your 2 post car lift must be bought with a specific aluminum-body attachment set, ask them to point to the manufacturer document that says so. Nine times out of ten no such document exists.

What the Border Shop Actually Bought

After walking through the myths the EV shop owner ended up buying a Rotary SPO12 12,000-pound symmetric overhead two-post. Not because he needed 12,000 pounds for EVs — he did not — but because he wanted the extra headroom for the occasional light-duty truck that came through his shop for pre-EV-conversion inspections. The 12,000-pound lift installed on his 5-inch slab without any concrete work. Total install was a single day. He added a Rivian adapter kit and a Tesla adapter kit as accessories. Total price came in under the mid-five-figure range including install and freight.

Eight months in he is doing engine oil pan gasket work on ICE customer vehicles and battery inspections on his EV clients without swapping lifts, without concrete problems, and without the specialty arm accessories the first dealer had tried to sell him. He said the myth-busting phone call saved him what felt like a five-figure over-spec and gave him confidence in the choice. That is the reason we walk every EV shop through the same checklist. Buy the lift you actually need, on the concrete you actually have, with the accessories that actually apply to the vehicles you actually service.
