Every myth about arm restraints and safety cams gets tested by that kind of work. Myth one — arm restraints only matter when the vehicle is moving

The most common wrong idea we hear is that arm restraints exist to keep the arms from swinging while you’re loading the vehicle. That’s part of the story, but not the important part. Arm restraints exist to keep the arms locked once the vehicle is up in the air and lateral force is applied, whether that’s a tech reaching up to pull a bolt, dropping a transmission out of the underside, or shifting a heavy component. Any of those actions puts side-load on the pad, and without a locked restraint the arm can swing enough to shift the pinch-weld contact.

On a European specialty shop’s 2 post car lift, those lateral loads are constant. Pulling a torque converter out of a longitudinal transmission means a tech is under the car with a heavy tool, pushing and pulling and rotating. Any myth that says the arms won’t move once the car is up ignores exactly the working conditions European transmission service creates. Restraints matter every job, and they matter more the heavier and longer the job runs. This is the safety habit we push hardest with new customers.

Myth two — a safety cam that clicks is a safety cam that works

That’s a broken safety system with no visible symptom other than the missing chair-test result. Myth three — European transmissions are lighter so a 10K is enough

A 10,000-lb 2 post car lift is fine for most passenger European cars. A 3-series or an A4 doesn’t push the capacity envelope. But European specialty shops don’t run just 3-series and A4. They run 5-series wagons, X5s, Q7s, Cayennes, and occasional 7-series sedans and RS models. When the vehicle mix is that broad, you need a lift that can handle the top of the range, not the middle. That means 12,000 pounds, not 10,000, and the freight cost delta is small enough that it should never be the deciding factor.

The myth we bust here is the one where the shop owner sizes the lift for the average customer vehicle. Averages don’t lift anything; the specific vehicle on the pads does. If the heaviest car you’ll see on this lift is 5,200 pounds, you want the lift rated for 8,000 pounds of margin above that, which means a 12K. Going to 10K on a European mixed-fleet shop is exactly the false economy that sends a shop back to us in year three to buy a bigger lift. Right-size once, install once, and move on.

Myth four — arm restraint wear is silent

Arm restraint wear starts silent, but it doesn’t stay silent. Once a restraint pin or gear-tooth mechanism has worn enough that it doesn’t fully seat, you get a subtle rattle when you shake the arm side to side with the lift down. Techs who spend years around a specific 2 post car lift feel that change in the arm before they hear it. The myth is that if the restraint still clicks into place, it’s still doing its job. The truth is that partial seating is the failure mode you want to catch before the day someone puts a torsional load through the arm and the pin skips.

Check restraint seating quarterly. It’s a five-minute walk-around. Lift each arm, rotate to swing, release, and confirm it settles into a detent that resists movement. If it settles but rotates under gentle side pressure, the mechanism is worn and the parts should be ordered. Restraint kits are inexpensive and the labor to swap them is under an hour per arm. This is one of the small maintenance items that separates a well-run shop from an occasional one.

Myth five — you can adjust arm restraint tension yourself

Some restraint mechanisms allow tension adjustment. Most don’t; the detent geometry is fixed by machining, not by a spring, and there is nothing to tighten. The myth that a loose restraint can be tightened with a wrench is dangerous because it leads owners to force adjustments that damage the mechanism. If a restraint feels loose, the part is worn and needs replacement. Not adjustment, not a workaround, not a shim.

Some newer designs, particularly on higher-capacity 2 post car lift models, do have a spring-loaded engagement that can be checked for tension. Even on those, the adjustment is limited and the fix for a truly worn spring is a new spring, not a stretched one. When in doubt, we tell European specialty shops to send us a photo of the mechanism and we’ll confirm whether it’s field-serviceable or whether the whole restraint assembly needs to come off. It’s a fifteen-minute email exchange, not a three-hour diagnosis on the phone.

Myth six — safety cams don’t need lubrication

The safety-cam pawl pivots on a small shaft, and that shaft benefits from a light lubricant every year or two. A dry pawl doesn’t fall as freely into the cam rungs, which slows engagement and, worst case, means the pawl hangs up and doesn’t drop at all. The myth we hear is that safety cams are sealed or self-lubricating or shouldn’t need attention. Manufacturers say otherwise. The annual maintenance procedure for every lift we sell includes a light coat of oil on the pawl pivot and the cam-ladder engagement points.

Skip that step for five years running and the pawl stops falling reliably. Do it every year and the cam stays fresh. This is the cheapest maintenance line item on any lift, meaning a couple of drops of oil and thirty seconds per column, and it’s the single most common overlooked item in the shops we service across the Iowa-Nebraska border. Put it on the annual checklist and it will still be running when your grandkids inherit the shop.

What the actual manuals say about a 2 post car lift with European loads
