A European specialty shop in northeast Iowa called us because a transmission service on an Audi Q7 had turned into a two-hour argument with a lift. The vehicle was on a 2 post car lift rated well above the vehicle weight, the arms reached the pinch welds fine, and the pan still would not clear the crossmember because the rise topped out four inches short of where the tech needed it. Nothing was broken. The lift just was not specced for the work. That happens constantly, and it happens because buyers compare model numbers instead of comparing specs. Myth One: Capacity Is the Spec That Matters Most

Capacity is the number on every ad and it is almost never the constraint in a European specialty shop. If your heaviest vehicle is a loaded Q7 or a Range Rover, you are somewhere around 6,000 pounds — well inside a 10,000 lb rating. Buying a 12,000 or 14,000 lb machine because bigger sounds safer gets you taller columns, a wider footprint, heavier arms that are clumsier to position on a low car, and a purchase price that did not buy you any capability you needed.

What actually limits the work is maximum rise, minimum pad height, and arm swing geometry. A transmission service means getting a pan or a full unit down and out, and that requires the vehicle high enough for a transmission jack to travel under it with the unit on the saddle. Look for the rise-to-pad number, not the overall height. Two lifts with identical 10,000 lb ratings can differ by six inches of usable rise, and six inches is the difference between a two-hour job and a five-hour job. When we spec a 2 post car lift for a driveline-heavy shop, rise is the first number we ask about and capacity is roughly the fourth.

Myth Two: A Model Number Tells You What You Are Buying

We get calls quoting model designations like “9LC” or “XPR-10S” as if the string uniquely describes a machine. It does not, at least not across a decade of revisions. Manufacturers reuse and re-suffix families constantly. The same nominal model can ship with different overhead beam heights, different arm sets, different power unit voltages, and — critically for parts — different cable and lock assemblies depending on the production year. A buyer up in North Dakota told us he wanted “a 9LC” and had a firm number in mind; when we pulled the actual spec revisions, two of them would not have fit under his 139-inch maximum height.

So compare the spec sheet, not the badge. The five numbers that decide fitment are overall height, maximum lifting height at the pad, minimum pad height, inside-column clearance, and arm reach at minimum and maximum extension. Write those down for each candidate and put them next to your bay dimensions and your vehicle list. And when you own the lift, photograph the serial tag. Half the parts calls we take start with a customer who knows the model family but not the revision, and the serial tag is what tells us which lock cable and which arm restraint gear you actually need.

Myth Three: Overhead or Baseplate Is Just a Preference

It is a building decision, not a taste decision. A clearfloor overhead unit gives you a completely open floor — no plate to trip over, no cable channel to sweep around, nothing between the columns. That is genuinely nicer to work on and it is what most commercial European shops want. The cost is height: you need the clearance for the beam plus the shutoff bar, and on a full-rise commercial machine that pushes toward 12 feet or more of clear ceiling.

Baseplate designs move the hydraulic line and equalizer cables into a low-profile plate across the floor. That buys you a lot of ceiling. If your shop is in a converted building in northeast Iowa with 11-foot joists and a door track running through the bay, a baseplate two-post is not a compromise — it is the only version that works. The tradeoff is the plate itself: transmission jacks and creepers have to roll over it, and it collects debris. We have installed both in shops within twenty miles of each other and the deciding factor was always the building. Measure to the lowest obstruction in the bay, including light fixtures and door hardware, before you decide which family of 2 post car lift you are shopping.

Myth Four: Asymmetric Is Only for Small Cars

The assumption is that asymmetric column rotation exists so door clearance works on compacts, and that a shop doing SUVs and wagons should default to symmetric. In practice, asymmetric geometry earns its keep on exactly the vehicles European specialty shops see. A lot of these cars have long front overhangs, aluminum pinch welds with narrow approved lift points, and a center of gravity that sits farther forward than the wheelbase suggests. Asymmetric arms — short in front, long in back — let you set on the factory points and still put the vehicle’s weight properly on the carriages.

Symmetric has its place. If you also service crew-cab pickups or long-wheelbase vans, symmetric loading handles the length better and the arms sit more naturally. The real answer for a mixed bay is an expandable top beam model that supports both narrow and wide drive-through configurations with telescoping arms — you set it up for the fleet you actually have and you can reposition arms for the outlier. Screw-pad and stackable adapter selection matters just as much here. A shop doing German transmission work will want a good set of tall pad extensions and a few marque-specific pinch weld blocks on the wall, because reaching a factory point with a bare pad is how you crush a rocker.

Myth Five: Concrete Requirements Are the Same for Every Model

Anchor spec varies by model, by capacity, and by column base design, and “four inches of concrete” is a floor rather than a universal answer. Higher-capacity units and baseplate designs with a different load path can want thicker slab or a different anchor length. A shop that pours a footing to the wrong spec has to redo it, and redoing a footing under a column that is already anchored is an expensive weekend.

What we tell people: get the actual manual for the actual revision you are buying, read the foundation page, and then verify what you have. Drill a test hole and measure. Check for radiant heat tubing and post-tension cable before anyone puts a rotary hammer in the floor — we have found both in Iowa shop slabs and neither is forgiving. If the slab is thin or cracked near the column locations, cut and pour footing pads to spec and let them cure fully before anchoring. Also confirm your voltage situation up front. Single-phase 208/230 is common in small shops; three-phase power units are often the better choice for a busy commercial bay but only if you have the service. Myth Six: If It Runs but Will Not Lift, the Cylinder Is Shot

This is the most common misdiagnosis we hear. A shop calls with a Challenger two-post where the motor runs, the reservoir is full, nothing is leaking on the floor, and the carriages will not move. Almost everyone assumes cylinder. Usually it is not. Start with the obvious: is the lowering valve fully seated, or is a bit of debris holding it cracked open so pressure bleeds back to tank? Is the suction screen in the reservoir clogged? Is the pump drawing air past a loose fitting or a low fluid level that only looks full because you checked it at full rise?

After that, check the check valve in the power unit and confirm the relief valve has not been backed off by somebody chasing a different problem. Internal cylinder bypass is real, but it presents as a lift that rises slowly under load and sags, not usually as one that does nothing. The point is that a systematic order of checks saves you from buying a cylinder you did not need. Building the Spec Sheet With Us

We come back with two or three candidates and the actual numbers side by side — rise, pad range, arm reach, column spacing, and what adapters you will need for the marques you work on. No badge comparisons, no guessing from a catalog photo.

A machine you cannot get a lock cable for in five years is a bad machine no matter how the brochure reads.
