Choosing a 2 post car lift for a race shop is less about the lift and more about the order you do things in. We spent part of last spring working through a build-out with a dirt late model crew chief up in northwest Iowa who was converting a 40×60 machine shed into a proper race shop — and the lift decision touched everything. Where the concrete got poured. Where the overhead door header ended up. Where the compressor line and the 220 drop ran. Where the transmission bench sat relative to the drain pan. Get the sequence right and it costs you nothing extra. Get it wrong and you’re saw-cutting a slab that’s four months old.

Start with the budget question, honestly

Every conversation we have starts here, and the honest answer shapes everything downstream. We hear a lot of numbers from callers: one wanted to stay at forty-one hundred and didn’t want install. Another said maybe five thousand for a hobby garage in the Des Moines metro. A third said he didn’t feel the need to spend ten grand but would if somebody made the case. All three are reasonable positions and all three point at different equipment.

Here’s the rough tiering as of this writing. Entry-level 9,000 to 10,000 lb units from value brands land in the low-to-mid four figures for the lift alone. Mid-tier — better arm restraints, thicker column steel, a power unit that isn’t the cheapest available — runs mid four figures. Premium commercial iron from the brands we actually stand behind for daily use starts in the high four figures and climbs from there with capacity and options. Freight is separate and it’s real money on a two-post; the columns are heavy and long. Install, anchors, and a first-time inspection add more. For this crew chief, the deciding factor wasn’t the sticker — it was that a race shop lift gets used hard on a Wednesday night at 11 p.m. with a car that has to be on the trailer Thursday morning, and a 2 post car lift that goes down at that moment costs more than the price difference between tiers.

Ceiling height decides clear-floor versus baseplate

This is the first hard branch in the tree and it’s decided by a tape measure, not preference. Measure from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction — not the peak of the truss, the lowest thing: a light fixture, a garage door track, a header, a sprinkler line. Then compare against the manufacturer’s overall height, which is usually a few inches taller than you’d guess because of the overhead crossbar assembly.

If you’ve got 12 feet or more, a clear-floor overhead model is almost always the better choice. Nothing crosses the bay floor, so you can roll a transmission jack, a creeper, or a floor jack anywhere without hopping a plate. If you’re under about 11 feet — and we talk to plenty of people in that spot, including one caller with a hard 139-inch ceiling max — you’re looking at a baseplate design where the hydraulic lines and equalization cables run in a low channel across the floor between the columns. Baseplate units work fine and they’ve been around forever, but the floor plate is a nuisance in a shop where you’re constantly sliding heavy things across the bay. In this northwest Iowa build the shed had 14 feet of clear height under the bottom chord, so clear-floor was easy, and we sited the 2 post car lift where the trusses gave us the most room above the crossbar for a future overhead reel bank.

Concrete: the branch nobody wants to hear about

We have turned down installs over concrete, and we’ll keep doing it. A two-post lift transfers everything through anchor bolts into the slab, and if the slab isn’t thick enough or strong enough, the anchors pull. Most 10,000 lb models want a minimum of about 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many manufacturers ask for more — 4.25 or 5 inches is common, higher for bigger capacities. Reinforcement helps but doesn’t substitute for thickness.

The problem is that people guess. We’ve had callers tell us the slab is “about 5 inches, maybe less,” or “6 to 8 inches” based on what they remember from a pour twenty years ago. Guessing is how a lift ends up leaning. The fix is easy: core drill a small test hole, or hire someone with a slab scanner, and know the number before you order. Also check the cure age — new concrete needs 28 days minimum before anchoring, and we’d rather wait. That’s the single biggest reason to sequence the slab work before the equipment order rather than after. In this shed the original 1990s pour measured a hair over 4 inches with no rebar, so we cut out two pads roughly 5 by 6 feet at each column location, dug down, and poured new 6-inch reinforced footings tied to the existing slab. It added a week and a modest cost, and it meant we could anchor a 2 post car lift with total confidence instead of hoping.

Symmetric or asymmetric, and why a race shop leans one way

Symmetric lifts put the columns directly across from each other with equal-length arms, centering the vehicle between the posts. Asymmetric lifts rotate the columns slightly and use a short front arm and a long rear arm, moving the vehicle rearward so the driver’s door clears the column. Some models are switchable, and there are versatile-configuration units that do a bit of both.

For a general repair shop taking in a mix of daily drivers, asymmetric is usually the winner because technicians get in and out of doors all day. For a race shop, symmetric usually wins, and here’s why: a race car doesn’t care about door clearance, but it does care about balance. Late models, sprint cars, and street-strip builds have wildly uneven weight distribution and short wheelbases, and a symmetric setup with the center of gravity between the posts is more predictable to load. Symmetric also gives you better under-car access at the transmission tunnel, which mattered here because gear changes and clutch work are the shop’s most common jobs. We picked a symmetric clear-floor 10,000 lb unit with telescoping arms and drop-end front arms, which is the configuration we recommend most often when somebody tells us they’ll be picking up both a lowered race car and a crew truck on the same 2 post car lift. Sequencing the build-out so nothing gets done twice

Here’s the order we gave the crew chief, and it’s the order we’d give anyone converting a shed or building a new shop. One: fix the concrete, including any new footings, and let it cure. Two: set the lift location on paper with real clearances — column footprint, arm swing at full extension, and at minimum three feet of walk space behind each column. Three: run electrical before the lift goes in, because getting a 220V single-phase circuit to the power unit column is trivial with an empty bay and miserable with a lift in the way. Four: install the lift and anchor it. Five: everything else — benches, air lines, reels, lighting, shelving.

The mistake we see constantly is doing step five first. Somebody builds a beautiful wall of cabinets and a welding bench, then discovers the lift arms sweep into them. One caller described a bay with a loft on the left and a wall on the right, which is exactly the geometry that forces a compromise on column placement. Lighting is the other one people miss — mount fixtures before the lift is in, and mount them so they’re not directly above the crossbar where a raised vehicle blocks every lumen. In this shop we also had the crew chief pre-plan a floor drain location and a dedicated fluid storage corner for transmission service, since gear oil and clutch work make a mess and you want the catch station within a few steps of the 2 post car lift, not across the building.

Transmission service specifics on a two-post

Two-post lifts are genuinely the best platform for transmission work, and that’s a big part of why this shop chose one over a four-post. The wheels hang free, the underside is completely open, and there’s nothing under the drivetrain to fight. But there’s equipment that goes with it. You need a proper telescoping transmission jack rated well above the unit’s weight — a rolling floor jack with a cradle adapter is not the same thing and we’ve seen a transmission come off one. You need a set of tall jack stands as secondary support any time somebody is going to lever against the chassis.

The other consideration is height. Pulling a transmission means you want the car high enough to work standing up, which is where the total ceiling math gets real: vehicle height plus max lift rise plus the overhead crossbar has to fit under your lowest obstruction. In a 14-foot shed with a low race car, there’s plenty of margin. In a 10-foot garage with a tall crew truck, you will be working at chest height and hating it. We also recommend adding a set of frame cradle pads or truck adapters if a 2 post car lift in a race shop will occasionally pick up the hauler’s tow vehicle — the pad height difference between a lowered late model and a three-quarter-ton pickup is significant, and having both adapter sets on hand beats stacking blocks. Install, inspection, and what we’d tell a first-time buyer

Some buyers want to install it themselves, and we get it — one caller was explicit that he didn’t need or want install, had a forklift for unloading, and was comfortable with the job. That’s fine, and we’ll sell you the lift and answer the phone while you’re doing it. But be realistic about what’s involved: unloading long, heavy columns, plumbing and bleeding hydraulics, setting equalization cable tension correctly, torquing anchors to spec, and verifying lock engagement on both sides. If any one of those is done wrong, the failure mode involves a car on the floor.

It’s not expensive, it catches cable stretch and anchor loosening before they matter, and it creates a paper trail if insurance ever asks.
