That is a fair question, and it is the right one to ask before you spend a dime. This guide walks a home-garage buyer through install prep and the site survey we do before anything ships, using a common job — pulling hubs and pressing wheel bearings — as the reason you want one in the first place.

Why a Home Garage Ends Up Wanting Two Posts
A farmer near Le Mars called us last spring because he had been doing wheel bearings on a half-ton on jack stands, and the fourth time he did it his back told him to stop. That is the honest origin story for most home installs. Jack stands work. They also mean you are on your back on cold concrete with a slide hammer, and the wheel is at knee height instead of chest height. Getting the vehicle up to a comfortable working height changes hub and bearing service from an all-Saturday ordeal into a two-hour job, and it does the same for brakes, exhaust hangers, and fuel line work.
The reason people land on two posts instead of four is access. A four-post keeps the tires on runways, which is great for storage and oil changes but useless when the whole point is pulling a wheel off. A 2 post car lift picks the vehicle up by the frame or pinch welds and leaves all four corners hanging free, so you can spin a hub, pull a knuckle, and swing an impact without fighting a runway. For a home shop that mostly does maintenance, suspension, and brake work on pickups and sedans, that open access is worth more than the parking capability. The tradeoff is that two posts demand more from your building — specifically the slab and the ceiling — which is exactly why the site survey comes first.
The Concrete Question Nobody Wants to Ask
Concrete is where most northwest Iowa home projects get complicated, and it is the first thing we ask about. A 10,000 lb two-post generally wants a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI cured concrete, and most manufacturers spec closer to four and a quarter with the anchors set a safe distance from any joint or edge. We have had callers tell us their slab is five inches and then discover, after drilling, that it thins to three near the overhead door where the pour ran out. That is not rare. Barn slabs poured in sections, garages with a floor drain trough, and additions built on top of an old apron all vary more than the owner thinks.
The good news is you can check it cheaply. Drill a small test hole with a hammer drill in the general area where a column would land, measure your depth, and do it again ten feet away. If you find less than four inches, you are not out of luck — the standard fix is cutting out a pad section under each column and pouring a new footing, typically a square of reinforced concrete a few feet across and a foot deep, then letting it cure a full 28 days before anchoring. We would much rather tell a customer to spend a weekend and a few hundred dollars on footings than watch a 2 post car lift get anchored into a slab that cannot hold it. Anchors do not fail quietly.
Ceiling Height, Overhead vs. Baseplate
The second measurement that decides your model is ceiling height, and we mean the true lowest obstruction — not the peak of the truss. Garage door tracks, opener rails, light fixtures, and cross bracing all count. A clearfloor overhead-beam lift usually needs somewhere around 12 feet of clear height for a 10,000 lb unit, and the overhead beam is where the equalization cables and the shutoff bar live. If you have 12 feet or better and no obstructions, take the overhead design. Nothing crosses the floor, so rolling a jack under the vehicle or sweeping the bay is easy.
If you are working with a nine or ten foot ceiling — common in attached garages around Sioux Center and Orange City — a baseplate model is the answer. Baseplate lifts run the hydraulic lines and cables through a low channel across the floor between the columns. You lose the clean floor and gain about two and a half feet of vertical room, which is often the difference between a usable install and no install at all. We have also had callers with a 14-foot ceiling who still needed baseplate because they wanted to raise a tall van without the overhead bar stopping them short. Give us your lowest obstruction number and your tallest vehicle and we will tell you which configuration to buy — that one conversation prevents most of the returns we see in this category.
What a Real Site Survey Covers
When we come out, or when we do a survey over the phone with photos, we are collecting about eight things. Slab thickness and age. Ceiling height at the lowest point. Bay width from wall to wall and from wall to any bench, loft, or shelving. Overhead door width and header height, because that dictates how you drive in. Electrical service and where the panel sits. Floor slope, since a slab that drains toward a door can put the columns out of plumb. Where the vehicle enters and exits. And whether there is anything above the columns you cannot move.
Column spacing matters more than people expect. A typical symmetric two-post has roughly nine feet between columns and needs a bay at least twelve feet wide to be comfortable, more if you want to open doors. One caller in Missouri had a loft on the left side and a wall on the right, which meant the lift had to sit tighter than ideal and the arms had to be positioned carefully every single time. It worked, but he lost flexibility. If you have a two-car garage and you want to keep parking on the other side, measure the swing of your own truck doors at full height before you commit. We have never regretted spending an extra twenty minutes on measurements, and we have definitely regretted the times a customer skipped it.
Power, Anchors, and the Install Day Itself
Electrical is straightforward but worth planning. Most residential two-post units ship with a single-phase 220V motor pulling on a 30-amp circuit, and a few are available in 110V for home shops that cannot get 220 to the wall. If you are running new wire, put the receptacle near the power column and leave slack — you do not want to discover the cord is three feet short after the columns are anchored. Three-phase is a commercial thing and rarely relevant in a home barn.
Install day on a straightforward job runs a few hours. We set and square the columns, drill anchors with a rotary hammer, torque to spec, plumb the columns with shims, mount the overhead beam or baseplate cover, route hydraulics, hang the power unit, bleed the system, set the equalization cables, and then cycle the lift several times unloaded before ever putting a vehicle on it. The last step is checking that both carriages arrive at the same height and that the safety locks engage audibly on every notch. Plenty of buyers install their own — the manuals are decent and a couple of guys with a forklift or a skid loader can manage it. What we would not do is skip the cable tensioning check or the anchor torque check. Those two items are where a self-installed 2 post car lift most often goes wrong, and both take ten minutes.
Budget Tiers and What You Actually Get
Buyers usually come in with a number in mind — we hear four thousand, five thousand, sometimes a flat “I am not spending ten grand on this.” That is a reasonable place to start, and here is roughly how the tiers shake out. At the entry end you are looking at a 9,000 to 10,000 lb baseplate or clearfloor unit from a value brand, freight included, no install. Mid-tier gets you a better-known name with heavier columns, better arm restraints, and a warranty someone will actually answer the phone about. The top tier is a commercial-grade unit built to run all day.
For a home garage in northwest Iowa doing wheel bearings, brakes, and the occasional transmission, we generally point people at BendPak or Atlas in the 10,000 lb class. Both are proven, parts are available, and neither is priced like a dealership install. Where we push back is when someone tries to save four hundred dollars on an unknown import with no parts pipeline. A cable, a lock cable, or a cylinder seal is a cheap fix if the manufacturer still exists; it is a boat anchor if they do not. Budget for freight, a liftgate or a forklift for unloading, anchors, and possibly concrete footings on top of the lift price. A 2 post car lift is one of those purchases where the sticker is maybe eighty percent of the real number, and knowing that up front keeps the project from stalling halfway through.
Living With It: Bearings, Maintenance, and Support
Once it is in, the workflow for a wheel bearing job is genuinely different. Drive in, set the arms on the manufacturer’s lift points, raise to about waist height, confirm the vehicle is stable with a firm shove, then take it to chest height and lower onto the locks. You will hear the pawls drop. Never work under a lift that is holding on hydraulics alone. From there the hub is right in front of you, the press is on the bench, and you are not rolling around on the floor with a bearing race in your hand.
Maintenance is light but not optional. Check hydraulic fluid level monthly, look over the equalization cables and lock cables for fraying or slack, grease the arm pins and carriage slide blocks, and re-torque the anchor bolts after the first month and then annually. Inspect the arm restraint gear teeth — if they are rounded, replace them, because that is what keeps an arm from swinging out from under a vehicle.
