A mobile mechanic working out of a leased shop bay in northwest Iowa called us last spring because he was tired of doing oil changes on ramps and creepers, and he wanted a 2 post car lift that would let him stand up under a vehicle instead of crawling under it forty times a week. His whole business is fluid service — engine oil, transmission drain-and-fills, differentials, transfer cases, coolant flushes — and every one of those jobs happens with the vehicle in the air and the tech underneath with both hands free. He had a budget, a ceiling measurement he’d taken with a tape and a stepladder, and a stack of model numbers he’d copied off three different websites. What he did not have was any way to tell whether those model numbers actually meant the same thing. That’s the part we help with, and this article walks through exactly how that comparison went.

What the model numbers on a 2 post car lift actually tell you

The first thing we did on that call was decode the model numbers he’d written down. Manufacturers encode a surprising amount into them, but they don’t all use the same scheme, which is why cross-shopping by name alone goes sideways fast. A Rotary SPO12 is a 12,000 lb clearfloor symmetric unit. The SPOA10 is a 10,000 lb asymmetric. A Challenger CL10V3 is a 10,000 lb clearfloor with a three-stage arm set. A BendPak XPR-10S is 10,000 lb symmetric with an expandable top beam and telescoping screw pads. An Atlas 9BP is a 9,000 lb baseplate design. Once you know the pattern — capacity, arm geometry, overhead versus baseplate — the list stops looking like alphabet soup.

What the model number does not tell you is whether the thing fits your building. That’s a separate set of measurements, and it’s where most people get burned. Overall column height, drive-thru clearance between columns, arm reach at the shortest and longest settings, minimum pad height, and the concrete specification are all published in the installation manual, not in the model designation. We pulled the manuals for all four of the units he was considering and put the real numbers side by side on a spreadsheet. Two of them were immediately out because his ceiling was 12 feet even and the overhead crossbar assemblies wanted 12 feet 2 inches minimum with the carriages at full rise. That single measurement eliminated half his shortlist in about four minutes.

Why oil and fluid work changes the arm geometry you want

A shop that does brakes, suspension and tires all day wants an asymmetric setup so the doors clear the columns and the tech can get in and out of the cabin. A mobile mechanic doing nothing but fluid service has a different priority: he needs the drain plug, the filter housing and the pan rail all reachable without an arm tube running through the work zone. On a lot of unibody cars the front arms land right beside the oil filter, and if you’ve got a fat arm tube and a tall pad sitting there, you’re reaching around it with a filter wrench and dumping used oil down your forearm.

Three-stage front arms solved most of that for him. They collapse shorter, which lets you set the front pads farther back on the pinch weld and pull the arm tube out of the filter area on the small cars he sees constantly. Drop-end arms helped too, because the lower pad height meant he could get under a lowered Subaru and a lifted half-ton with the same setup instead of chasing adapters. We also talked about swing arm restraints — every reputable 2 post car lift has them, but the gear-driven style holds position better than a simple detent when a tech is bumping arms all day. For a fluid-service business where the vehicle goes up and down twelve times a shift, that wear difference shows up in year three.

Ceiling height, door height and the measurement people skip

He measured 12 feet to the underside of the joists and figured that was the number. It wasn’t. There was a run of conduit and a section of gas line hanging about seven inches below the joists directly over where the lift was going, and the overhead crossbar would have hit it. We ask for three measurements now on every quote: clear height at the lift location, clear height at the overhead door opening, and the lowest obstruction anywhere in the bay footprint. Sprinkler heads, unit heaters, air lines, and light fixtures all count.

Door height matters separately because it caps the vehicle height you can bring in, and it caps how high you can raise something and still swing a tailgate or a hood. In his case the door was 10 feet and the bay was 12, so anything tall enough to be a problem couldn’t get inside anyway. That’s common in older Iowa shop buildings — the box is taller than the opening. If your ceiling is genuinely low, a baseplate two-post is the answer. The floorplate assembly runs across the bay at ground level instead of overhead, and you gain back every inch of the crossbar and shutoff bar. The tradeoff is a bar you’ll roll a floor jack over and eventually trip on, which is why we don’t recommend it when the height is there for a clearfloor unit.

Concrete: the spec that decides whether a lift is safe

Every conversation about a 2 post car lift eventually lands on the slab, and it should, because the anchors are the only thing keeping two columns and a car from tipping over. The typical requirement for a 10,000 lb unit is 4 to 6 inches of 3,000 PSI minimum concrete, cured at least 28 days, with no seams or expansion joints inside the anchor pattern. Higher capacity units want more — a 12,000 or 15,000 lb model commonly calls for 6 inches. Read the manual for the specific unit, not a general rule of thumb, because the required embedment depth of the anchor drives everything.

We hear “my concrete is about five inches, maybe less” constantly, and “maybe less” is the part that matters. We had a customer in north-central Missouri last year with the same story — a 16-foot door, a loft on one side, a wall on the other, and a slab he thought was five inches. We had him core drill a small test hole in a corner of the footprint. It was three and a half. The fix was a pair of poured footing pads under each column, tied into the existing slab, which added a day and a modest cost but made the install legitimate. Coring costs almost nothing compared to discovering the problem when an anchor spins in the hole on install day.

Capacity: buying more than you need versus buying enough

The northwest Iowa mechanic told us his heaviest regular vehicle was around 6,000 pounds — a three-quarter-ton pickup that belongs to a farm client. That put him well inside a 10,000 lb rating. He asked whether he should go to 12,000 anyway, and our honest answer was that it depends on what shows up in five years, not what shows up today. A 10,000 lb unit handles essentially every passenger car, crossover, minivan, and half-ton on the road. Three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks with service bodies or plows start eating that margin, and dually one-tons can exceed it.

The step up to 12,000 usually costs less than people expect — a few hundred dollars at the equipment level — but it isn’t free elsewhere. Taller, heavier columns, longer arms, sometimes a heavier concrete spec, sometimes a different anchor. If you’re already building the bay and the slab is right, take the capacity. If you’re retrofitting into a leased space with an unknown slab, the smaller unit is often the smarter buy. He went with a 10,000 lb clearfloor model with three-stage front arms and drop-end rears, and eighteen months in it’s been the right call for a fluid-service business. He referred a friend in the same county who bought the identical configuration off the same spec sheet.

New, used, and what a 2 post car lift really costs to own

Equipment price is the number everybody focuses on and the least useful one for comparing options. A 10,000 lb clearfloor two-post from a reputable brand typically lands in the low-to-mid four figures for the equipment alone. Freight to Iowa adds a few hundred and requires either a forklift on site or a liftgate delivery. Professional installation, including anchoring, shimming to plumb, hydraulic connection, and a full function and safety check, runs another chunk. Add electrical if you don’t already have the right service at the location — most single-phase units want a dedicated 220V circuit, and that’s an electrician’s bill, not ours.

Used equipment can genuinely make sense, and we sell parts for plenty of thirty-year-old lifts that are still doing honest work. What kills a used deal is missing documentation, unknown cable and cylinder condition, and a seller who can’t produce a serial number. Cables and cylinders are the two wear items that cost real money, and on a used unit you’re often buying both without knowing it. Our rule of thumb: if the used unit is more than about 60 percent of new equipment price, buy new and get the warranty. If it’s a known brand with a readable data plate and you can inspect it under load before money changes hands, a used 2 post car lift can be a very good buy. How the install actually went, and what we’d do differently

Delivery landed on a Tuesday. He had a forklift on site, which cut the unload to twenty minutes and saved him a liftgate charge. Our crew laid out the anchor pattern first thing, checked it against the manual’s minimum distance to the nearest slab joint, and found we needed to shift the whole footprint eleven inches toward the north wall to stay clear of a control joint. That’s a normal adjustment, but it’s the kind of thing that turns into an argument if it gets discovered after holes are drilled, so we do layout before anything touches concrete.

Columns went up, anchors set, plumb checked with a laser in both axes, shims added under one column base where the slab had settled a hair. Hydraulic lines, power unit wiring, fluid fill, bleed the cylinders, cycle it a dozen times empty, then load-test with a real vehicle and verify both locks engage audibly at every position. Whole thing was done in a day. The one thing we’d do differently: he wanted the power unit on the driver-side column, and after living with it he’d rather have had it on the passenger side, away from the door traffic.
