An overlanding builder in southeast Iowa reached out about a 2 post car lift for a workshop he had spent two winters converting from an old grain-cleaning building into a proper garage. He was working out of a rented industrial bay across town, driving between them daily, and losing money on transit time. What he needed was a lift that could handle a fully loaded expedition rig, a heavy-duty diesel with drawer systems and a roof tent, without leaving anything on the table for safety or accessibility. What follows is the case study we wrote up after his install went live last spring, published with his permission but with details generalized to protect his business.

The Four-Runner Problem: Why He Bought a Two-Post

The trigger vehicle for the lift purchase was an older Toyota with a two-inch lift, thirty-five inch tires, and a full expedition build: sliders, front bumper with a winch, roof rack with an awning, and a bed drawer system. Fully loaded, the rig scaled north of six thousand pounds. Working underneath on ramps and jack stands was a two-person job that took twice as long as it needed to. A 2 post car lift solved the problem: full standing access, wheels-free service, and enough room to swing a tire off without asking for a spotter.

He asked us early on why not a four-post. The answer for overland builders is almost always the same: overlanders work on their rigs constantly, in small ways, weekly. Wheels-off service, suspension bushings, differential service, steering component swaps, all of those are two-post jobs. Four-posts are for storage. If you have space and budget for both, great. If you have to pick one, the 2 post car lift is the working lift and it wins on productivity every time. The two-post also gives you flexibility to service smaller cars in the same bay when the customer mix expands, which was already in his business plan.

ALI Gold Certification Demystified

He asked us on the first call whether ALI Gold certification actually mattered or whether it was marketing. We gave him the honest answer: it matters, and here is why. ALI is the Automotive Lift Institute, a third-party organization that runs a testing lab where lift manufacturers submit specific models for structural and safety testing to ANSI standards. Gold certification means that specific model, not the general product line, was tested and passed, and that the manufacturer is under ongoing audit.

For an overland builder who was going to have his hands under a six-thousand pound rig weekly, the ALI Gold badge on his 2 post car lift was not marketing. It was the difference between a lift built by a company that would submit to independent testing and one that would not. Every lift we sell for commercial or serious enthusiast use is ALI Gold or ALI Gold-equivalent. We do not sell the auction-site imports, not because they are always dangerous, but because the certification pipeline is not there and we cannot back the lift five years post-install. The Install Site Walk We Do Before Shipping

Before we ship a lift into an old converted building, we do a site walk or a video walkthrough. In this case, we drove down for the site walk because we were in the area and the building had enough quirks to justify eyes on. The building was an early nineteen-hundreds structure with a slab poured in the seventies, ceiling height of thirteen feet at the peak but only eleven feet at the trusses, and an overhead door that was fourteen feet wide.

Everything checked out for a clearfloor overhead 2 post car lift as long as we placed the columns between the trusses rather than under them. Slab core came back at just under five inches with old rebar, adequate for a ten-thousand pound lift with proper anchor placement. We flagged one problem: a floor drain roughly where the driver-side column wanted to sit, which we relocated by shifting the column layout six inches without compromising vehicle centering. Site walks catch these problems before the shipment leaves the dock. The alternative is discovering them on install day with the truck in the driveway and the columns already off the trailer, which is a mess we work hard to avoid.

Overhead Cross-Tube Clearance for Roof Racks and Tents

An overland rig with a roof tent and a full rack is tall. Really tall. Add a fifteen-inch tent to a stock roof line and you are pushing eight feet before the wheels leave the ground. On an overhead-style 2 post car lift, the shutoff bar and the cable header sit at the top of the columns, and a fully loaded overlander needs to clear that hardware without contact.

For his rig we spent an hour with a tape measure verifying that the roof tent would clear the overhead bar at maximum lift height with a factory margin of at least three inches. The manufacturer spec was clear enough, but the tent was aftermarket and the loaded ride height was different from the factory number in the brochure. On his install, we set the shutoff bar at the maximum height the manufacturer allowed on that column, giving him full clearance for the tented rig. If we had missed the check and set the bar at the default position, he would have hit the bar the first time he tried to lift with the tent on. Not fatal, but expensive to fix. Overlanders should always run their tallest configuration through the clearance math before ordering.

Arm Reach and Pad Height for Lifted Trucks

Lifted trucks bring their own set of arm-reach problems. The factory lift points on a Toyota with a two-inch lift are two inches higher than a stock rig, and the arms need enough vertical adjustment to reach the pinch weld without hitting the sliders or the diff. On his rig we specced a triple-telescoping arm assembly that could extend farther than the factory dual-telescoping arms and reach a pad point that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Triple-telescoping arms cost a couple hundred more per pair than dual-telescoping and give you meaningfully more geometry flexibility on lifted rigs, wide trucks, and unusual pickup points. We stock both. On a strictly passenger-car workshop we default to dual. On an overlanding or truck-heavy shop we default to triple. The 2 post car lift he ended up with was a Rotary ten-thousand pound overhead clearfloor with triple-telescoping arms and low-profile pad adapters for the rocker slider clearance issue. First lift with the tent on cleared everything with room to spare.

Anchor and Slab Prep on an Old Shop

Old slabs are the wildcard on every rural Iowa install. On his slab, the core came back at four-and-three-quarter inches with rebar visible in the second inch. That was borderline for the ten-thousand pound lift; the manufacturer wanted four-inch minimum but we like to see five inches for safety margin on daily heavy service. We evaluated the reinforcement, verified the concrete PSI by the age and the mix probability, and made the call to proceed with standard three-quarter inch wedge anchors at maximum embedment.

Where the slab shows any sign of weakness, spalling, cracks near the anchor grid, evidence of past freeze damage, we recommend an anchor upgrade or a slab patch before install. In his case the slab was solid, no cracks, no spalling, and we proceeded. The install came in on schedule and the anchor torque check at ninety days showed zero movement. Follow-Up: Six Months In

We came back at six months to check anchor torque, cable tension, and hydraulic fluid. Everything was in spec. He had put roughly forty lift cycles on it in the first six months, all on his own rig or on friends’ expedition builds. Cables had settled slightly, which is normal, and we retensioned. Powerpack was clean. Arm restraints engaging cleanly at every position. No surprises.

What he told us at the six-month visit was that the biggest change was not the lift itself but the way he worked. Jobs that used to take a weekend, changing his front differential, running new brake lines, replacing bushings, were now weeknight jobs. He was billing more hours because he could do them faster and cleaner. He had also picked up two new customer builds in the six-month window based on referrals from other overlanders who had seen the shop. The 2 post car lift paid for itself in eight months on labor recovery alone, before we counted the new business. That is the kind of case study we like writing.
