A service manager at a mid-size dealership in southern Minnesota called us last spring with a problem that sounds simple until you get a tape measure involved: he needed a new 2 post car lift in the bay his techs use for differential and axle fluid service, and the building fought him on every option. The bay had a 139-inch clear ceiling under a sprinkler main, a 16-foot overhead door, and a mezzanine storage loft hanging over the left column position. He’d been quoted an overhead-style unit by a national reseller who never asked about the sprinkler. That’s the kind of thing we get paid to catch before a freight truck shows up in your parking lot with a 2,400-pound pallet you can’t install.

Why the overhead-vs-baseplate question comes first, not last

Most buyers start with capacity. Capacity is the easy part — if your heaviest vehicle is a three-quarter-ton pickup, 10,000 lb covers it, and 12,000 or 15,000 lb covers a dealership that occasionally sees a loaded one-ton dually. The hard part is deciding whether the equalization system runs across a top beam above the vehicle or through a channel in the floor between the columns. That single decision drives your ceiling requirement, your slab requirement, your bay width, and whether a tech can roll a transmission jack straight through without stepping over anything.

An overhead (clear-floor) design puts the cables and hydraulic line in a top beam and gives you an unobstructed floor. That’s the standard choice for a production bay because floor sweeping is easier and nothing catches a drain pan. The tradeoff is height: you need roughly 12 feet of true clear space for a typical 10,000 lb clear-floor column, and the shutoff bar hangs lower still. A baseplate design flips it — cables cross the floor in a low steel channel, and you can drop the total column height dramatically. In the southern Minnesota bay we mentioned, the sprinkler main killed the overhead option outright, so a baseplate unit was the only honest answer.

The dimensions that actually matter on a spec sheet

When we walk a bay, we write down six numbers before we say a word about brands. True clear ceiling height — measured to the lowest obstruction, not the deck. Slab thickness and cure age. Distance from the intended column centerlines to the nearest wall, post, or drain. Overhead door opening height and how far the open door panel projects down into the bay. Bay width between obstructions. And the maximum wheelbase and curb weight of the heaviest vehicle you actually service, not the one you serviced once in 2019.

That last number is where people talk themselves into more capacity than they need and less lift height than they want. A 2 post car lift with a 10,000 lb rating and 74 inches of rise will let a six-foot tech stand upright under a crossover. Bump to a 15,000 lb unit and you gain capacity but often the columns get taller, which is exactly the wrong direction in a 139-inch bay. The dealership’s fluid-service work is almost entirely under-vehicle: differential covers, drain plugs, fill ports, axle seals. For that, rise and unobstructed shoulder room beat raw tonnage every single time. We ended up specifying a baseplate model at 12,000 lb with an asymmetric arm set so the doors could open on longer sedans without hitting a column.

Concrete: the spec nobody wants to hear about

Manufacturer installation manuals for a two-post generally call for four to six inches of 3,000 PSI minimum concrete, cured a minimum of 28 days, with anchor bolts set a required distance from any expansion joint, saw cut, or slab edge. Those numbers are not suggestions. The anchors are what keep the columns from rotating under load, and a column that rotates is the failure mode that makes the news. We have core-drilled slabs in old Iowa and Minnesota buildings that were advertised as six inches and came back at three and a half over questionable base.

Baseplate lifts are sometimes assumed to be gentler on concrete because the crossmember ties the columns together at the floor. There’s some truth to that — the tie does help resist splay — but it does not exempt you from the anchor spec. If your slab is thin, the fix is a poured pad: cut out a section, dig, add reinforcement, and pour to spec. On the southern Minnesota job the slab measured a solid six inches of decent concrete, so we anchored straight to it. On a Missouri shop we quoted the same month, the slab was closer to four and possibly less in spots, and we told the owner flat out that a new pad had to come first. He didn’t love hearing it. He liked it better than a dropped car.

Choosing a 2 post car lift for differential and axle fluid work

Fluid service is a specific workflow and it rewards specific features. Techs are working at chest and shoulder height with a fill pump, a catch pan, and often a torque wrench on a cover plate. That means you want maximum rise, arms that get out of the way of the differential housing, and drop-end or three-stage front arms so you can reach the correct lift points on both a low sports sedan and a lifted pickup. Screw pads with two-stage telescoping adapters matter more than most people realize — a truck frame and a unibody pinch weld are not the same pickup point.

We also push shops toward asymmetric arm geometry for this work. Rotating the columns slightly and running shorter front arms shifts the vehicle rearward, which puts the doors between the columns instead of against them. Techs who get in and out of the cab a dozen times a shift notice that immediately. On the Minnesota install, the shop had been fighting door dings against the columns of their old symmetric unit for years and treated the new geometry like a raise. If your bay does double duty for tire and brake work, an asymmetric 2 post car lift is still the more versatile setup, and the capacity penalty is essentially zero at 10,000 to 12,000 lb.

What a baseplate lift actually costs you day to day

The honest downside of a baseplate design is that steel channel on the floor. It’s low — usually well under three inches — but it’s there. A creeper catches it. A floor jack rolls over it with a bump. Sweeping and scrubbing take an extra second. Over ten years in a busy production bay, those seconds add up to real annoyance, and that’s why clear-floor units dominate new construction where ceiling height isn’t a constraint.

The upside is that the channel buys you height you cannot otherwise create. In buildings with 10 to 11 feet of clear space, sprinkler heads, ductwork, or a mezzanine, a baseplate unit is often the only way to get a two-post in the building at all. It also tends to install a little faster because there’s no top beam to hoist and square. We tell shops to think of it as a tradeoff between daily convenience and building reality — and building reality wins. One central Iowa fleet garage we service runs three baseplate columns pairs under a low deck and hasn’t complained once, because the alternative was no lift and a lot of jack stands. Installation, inspection, and the paperwork side

A two-post install on a good slab is typically a one-day job for a two-tech crew: lay out centerlines, drill and set anchors, stand and plumb the columns, torque the anchors to spec, run hydraulics, bleed the system, sync the equalization cables, and cycle the lift under load while checking every safety lock engages. Plumb matters more than people expect. A column that’s out by a fraction over eight feet of height will chew carriage slide blocks and make the locks sound wrong.

After that, the ongoing obligation is annual inspection. ANSI/ALI ALCTV and the ALI Lift Inspection standard call for a qualified inspection once a year, and most insurers and dealer program audits now ask for the certificate. That inspection covers cable tension and condition, lock function, anchor torque, arm restraints, hydraulic condition, and column plumb. Getting the right answer before you spend the money

The dealership in southern Minnesota ended up with a baseplate unit, asymmetric arms, screw pads with tall adapters, and a single-point lock release, installed in a bay that would have rejected the lift the first vendor quoted. Total elapsed time from our site visit to a working lift was under three weeks, most of which was freight. The cost difference between the wrong lift and the right one wasn’t the sticker — it was the return freight, the restocking fee, and the six weeks of a bay sitting idle that we avoided.
