Each column weighs 250 to 350 pounds — heavy enough that you do not want to muscle it up manually, and not so heavy that a forklift or a chain hoist cannot handle it. Our standard method uses two techs and a small come-along or chain hoist rated for 1,500 pounds anchored to an overhead beam or to a temporary strut. We lift the column, guide the base into position on the anchor holes, and settle it against the slab.
If a family garage does not have an overhead anchor point, we bring a portable A-frame gantry that sets up in about twenty minutes. Column alignment is checked with a laser level at three points on each column — front face, side face, and top. Being out of plumb by even a degree changes how the arms swing and how the safety locks engage, so we get this right the first time. Anchor holes drill into the marked positions with a heavy rotary hammer. Anchors are installed and initial-torqued but not final-torqued until the whole assembly is together and cycled. Seasonal storage layout considerations
Seasonal vehicle storage in a Waterloo family garage often includes a small collection of family cars, an old truck the grandparents drove, and one or two current daily drivers. A 2 post car lift makes the storage math work — the winter beater can sit on the lift with the summer car below, doubling the effective bay count. Setup sequence: mechanical before electrical
Setup sequence matters on a 2 post car lift install because the mechanical setup and the electrical setup interact in ways that trip up inexperienced installers. Mechanical goes first. Columns get anchored, overhead beam or baseplate goes on, carriages slide into columns, arms attach to carriages, cables route through sheaves, and cylinders bolt in place. Once all mechanical is in position we cycle the lift manually — pump the hydraulic reservoir by hand or with a small drill-driven pump — through its full range of motion. This confirms that everything moves freely, that safety locks engage at every position, and that the two columns rise together evenly.
Only then do we wire the electrical. If we run the electrical first and then find a mechanical issue, we have to disconnect and rework. If we run the mechanical first, cycle manually, and confirm everything, we can then wire the powerpack knowing the lift is right. This sequence adds about an hour to install day but eliminates rework a hundred percent of the time. Third-generation shop owners who have seen bad installs on other lifts appreciate the discipline. We describe the sequence up front and stick to it. If a third-party electrician wants to wire during our mechanical work, we ask them to wait — the sequence exists for a reason, and skipping it invariably means coming back later.
