What arm restraints actually do

Arm restraints are the mechanical locks that keep the swing arms of a 2 post car lift from moving out of position while the vehicle is in the air. When a tech swings an arm into place under a rocker pad and lowers the pad against the vehicle, an arm restraint automatically engages the moment the arm takes load. On a Rotary SPO10 or Challenger CL10, that restraint is a spring-loaded gear that meshes with a toothed plate on the pivot point. Once loaded, the arm cannot rotate — not while brake service is happening, not while the tech leans against the lift, not when a rotor is dropped on the floor.

The failure mode arm restraints prevent is the classic swing-out event: an arm loaded off-center, the load shifting, and the arm rotating out from under the vehicle. Before ALI mandated arm restraints on certified lifts, this was one of the leading causes of vehicle-fall incidents. What we teach fleet supervisors is to visually confirm engagement — with the vehicle at working height, each arm should have zero rotational play. If any arm can be moved by hand, that lift comes out of service until we investigate.

Safety cams: mechanical, not hydraulic

A 2 post car lift holds a vehicle in the air on mechanical safety cams, not hydraulic pressure. This is the single most important safety principle in vehicle lifting, and it is the one that outsiders get wrong most often. Hydraulic pressure raises the lift, and once the vehicle is at the desired height, the operator lowers it a few inches until the carriage rests on the nearest mechanical lock — the safety cam. From that point on, the hydraulic system could fail completely and the vehicle would not drop.

On a Rotary or Challenger 2 post car lift, the safety cams engage automatically as the carriage rises. The tech hears a click at every locking position — usually every four to six inches of travel. When the vehicle reaches working height, the operator releases the up button, then presses the down button briefly to lower the carriage onto the nearest cam. That is when the tech starts brake service, not before. In a western Illinois fleet bay running rotor swaps all day, this dwell-on-cams practice is drilled into every operator we train, and it is the reason the bay stays safe over thousands of cycles.

Cam engagement: the audible and visual check

Cam engagement is not something the operator should have to guess at. On a properly installed 2 post car lift, the tech should hear the cam engage — a distinct metallic click as the carriage settles onto the lock. On some units the click is loud; on others it is quieter but still audible. What can go wrong is a cam that fails to engage because a wire pin is stuck, a spring is fatigued, or a linkage is dirty. On a well-maintained lift this is rare, but it is the exact failure mode we look for during the annual inspection. Our tech cycles the 2 post car lift under no load, listens at each column for the click sequence, and physically inspects each cam through the window. If a cam is slow to engage, we lubricate the mechanism or replace the spring — the parts are cheap and the consequence of skipping the inspection is not. Brake service and rotor swaps: the dwell-time question

Brake service is the highest-cycle work on a municipal fleet 2 post car lift. Over a full shift, one bay may cycle the lift six or eight times, and every cycle depends on the safety cams engaging cleanly at working height. That is the volume that reveals whether a cam mechanism is well-maintained or borderline.

Our recommendation for western Illinois fleet supervisors is to include a monthly walk-down on top of the annual inspection. The walk-down is a five-minute check the shop foreman can do himself: cycle the empty lift to the top of travel, listen for the cam clicks, lower onto the nearest lock, and verify the safety indicator lights show green if the model has them. Any anomaly triggers a call to us before the next vehicle goes on the 2 post car lift. Arm-restraint reset: what the tech needs to know

After the vehicle is lowered and the arms are swung out from under it, the arm restraints need to reset for the next vehicle. On most modern 2 post car lift models, the reset is automatic — the arm returns to the free position when the pad is fully retracted and the arm is swung to its parked orientation. But older units, or units that have been in service a long time without maintenance, sometimes hold the restraint engaged. When that happens, the tech cannot swing the arm into position for the next vehicle, and the natural instinct is to force it.

Forcing an arm past a stuck restraint is how mechanisms get damaged. Our training on every western Illinois install covers the manual reset procedure — a small lever or button that disengages the restraint gear so the arm can be moved. If the reset is happening more than occasionally, the mechanism needs service, and we replace the spring and clean the gear teeth. On a well-maintained 2 post car lift, the reset should be transparent — the tech never thinks about it. When the reset starts to hesitate, that is the maintenance flag. Our annual inspection catches it, and our operator training empowers the tech to catch it between visits.

ALI Gold Label is the third-party certification that tells a fleet supervisor the 2 post car lift meets ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards for load capacity, structural integrity, and safety-system performance. Arm restraints, safety cams, hydraulic overload protection, and control ergonomics are all verified by independent testing. It does not.
