Exhaust and driveline work means long stretches with a tech standing under the vehicle, arms overhead, often with a helper. That’s exactly the scenario where an underrated lift becomes a liability. We see shops try to stretch a 9,000 lb or 10,000 lb symmetric lift to cover 1-ton duallies and small box trucks, and it works right up until it doesn’t. The tradeoff is installation complexity. Baseplate models generally cost more to install because of the underground hydraulic routing, and not every shop’s concrete is a candidate without core work first. For driveline and exhaust access specifically, either configuration gives you full underside clearance once the vehicle’s up — the choice mostly comes down to your ceiling and your budget for install labor. Concrete, Anchoring, and the Install Day Realities

We’ve been to too many sites where the customer swears the concrete is “plenty thick” and it turns out to be 4 inches over gravel fill with rebar an inch below the surface. Electrical and Site Prep Costs Shops Underestimate

If your bay doesn’t have a dedicated 220V circuit sized for the lift’s motor draw, that’s a separate electrician cost, and it’s worth getting quoted before install day, not discovered on it.

Site prep also includes clearing the bay of anything that’ll be in the way of columns going up, checking overhead obstructions like light fixtures or HVAC ductwork, and confirming floor drains or in-floor heat lines aren’t sitting exactly where anchors need to go. We ask about in-floor heat every single time now, because a misplaced anchor into a heat line turns a lift install into a slab repair job. None of this is dramatic, but it’s the kind of detail that separates a smooth install day from a delayed one, and shops that plan for it save money versus shops that find out mid-drill.

What a Realistic Total Looks Like for Corridor Shops

Pulling it together: a mid-capacity two-post lift plus freight, standard concrete with no electrical needed, and a straightforward overhead install typically lands in the low-to-mid four figures for install labor on top of equipment cost. Add electrical work, baseplate configuration, or compromised concrete requiring extra anchoring, and that number climbs. It’s a real investment, but shops that get a 2 post car lift installed correctly the first time avoid the much larger cost of downtime, failed inspections, or a redo six months later.
