Start With Capacity, Not Price

Every decision tree for a 2 post car lift installed in a shop that touches restoration work has to start with the heaviest vehicle you’ll ever put on it, not the one you own today. A 9,000 lb lift feels like plenty until a customer rolls in a full-frame 1970s pickup with a cast iron transmission and a fuel tank still half full. Asymmetric lifts offset the vehicle toward the rear, opening up clearance at the front columns and giving techs more room to maneuver a transmission jack without fighting the frame.

For shops doing regular transmission service on trucks and larger classic cars, we lean toward asymmetric configurations almost every time. The extra swing room around the drive-thru path matters when you’re wrestling a heavy component out solo, which happens more often in a restoration shop than a general repair bay. We’ve had this conversation with shop owners across the corridor who assumed symmetric was the default choice simply because it’s what showed up first in a catalog search — it’s worth the extra five minutes to think through your actual workflow before you commit.

Rise Height and Drop-End Arms

Restoration shops often work on vehicles with unusual ride heights, lowered customs, and trucks with aftermarket lift kits, and rise height plus arm reach becomes a real constraint. Standard arms may not reach frame contact points on a slammed classic or clear the pinch welds on a raised 4×4 without an adapter. Drop-end arm designs, available on several Rotary and Challenger models, lower the effective pad height and give you more usable reach on both extremes.

We always ask restoration customers to bring us photos or specs of the two or three hardest vehicles in their bay before we finalize a model recommendation. A lift that handles a stock daily driver fine can struggle with a bagged truck or a car sitting on period-correct wheels with limited ground clearance. Getting the arm geometry right at the spec stage means less time spent on wood blocks and adapter pucks once the lift is actually installed and your crew is trying to get a transmission out from underneath a customer’s pride and joy.

Anchoring and Concrete Requirements Along the Corridor

We’ve installed lifts in shops from older Iowa buildings with thin, aging slabs to newer construction across the river in Illinois with modern 6-inch pours, and the concrete is just as important as the lift model itself. Bay width determines whether you can run the expanded top beam configurations that make wide trucks and dually work trucks easier to load without clipping mirrors or fender flares on the columns.

We measure every restoration shop’s actual usable bay space, not just the quoted dimensions from a building plan, because support columns, ductwork, and stored parts racks eat into real clearance constantly. A lift that’s technically rated for your ceiling height can still feel cramped if there’s a light fixture or duct run six inches lower than expected.
