We get a version of this call every fall from EV specialty shop owners around the Des Moines metro: they’ve got a low-mile EV or a weekend classic that needs to come off the floor for winter, and they want a 2 post car lift installed before the first hard freeze. The question that stalls almost every one of these projects isn’t brand or capacity — it’s whether to buy used or new. We’ve installed both, and we’ve also had to turn away used lifts that should have gone to the scrapyard instead of a customer’s bay. Myth #1: A Used Lift Is Always the Cheaper Path to Getting a 2 Post Car Lift Installed

On paper, used looks like the obvious win. We saw this firsthand with a shop near La Porte City that already owned a used two-post Rotary lift and just needed installation — no oil, no new hydraulics, straightforward setup on 5-inch concrete. That kind of job is genuinely cheap because the equipment cost is already sunk and the lift is in good mechanical shape. But that’s the exception, not the rule.

Most of the used lifts we get called to look at have unknown service history, worn cables, pitted cylinders, or arm restrictors that were removed by a previous owner who didn’t know better. Once we add up new cables, a cylinder reseal, safety-lock replacement, and the labor to sort out a lift nobody can tell us the age of, a used 2 post car lift installed often costs close to what a new entry-level unit would run — except the new one comes with a warranty and predictable arm geometry for EV battery packs. If you’re storing a vehicle worth real money, that math matters.

Myth #2: EVs and Seasonal Storage Don’t Change the Lift Equation

EVs are heavier than the combustion vehicles most used two-post lifts were rated for in the 1990s and 2000s. A lot of older 9,000-lb lifts were designed around curb weights that predate 1,000-lb battery packs sitting low in the chassis. Seasonal storage adds another wrinkle: vehicles sit loaded on the arms for months, not minutes. Myth #3: Concrete and Ceiling Height Don’t Matter as Much for Storage-Only Use

Some owners assume that because a lift is only holding a parked vehicle — not being cycled dozens of times a day — the slab and clearance requirements are more forgiving. They’re not. A 2 post car lift installed on thin or cracked concrete is still an anchoring problem whether the car moves once a year or ten times a day; the anchors need the same embedment and edge distance regardless of use case.

Ceiling height matters just as much too. Where used lifts fall short is documentation. Most used units show up without a manual, without a clear capacity rating anyone can verify, and without a service history. The tradeoff is upfront cost. From there it’s positioning for ceiling clearance, door swing, and workflow — especially important for EV shops that need clear access to under-vehicle battery service points. We square the columns, torque anchors to spec, run the hydraulics, and test-cycle the lift empty before it ever holds a customer’s vehicle. For seasonal storage applications, we also walk owners through a quick pre-storage checklist so a vehicle sitting on the lift for months doesn’t develop flat-spotted tires or seal issues from prolonged static load.

Making the Call: Our Honest Recommendation

If you’re storing one personal vehicle in a home garage for the winter and found a well-maintained used two-post at a fair price, go for it — just have it inspected before installation. If you’re an EV specialty shop storing customer vehicles, carrying liability, and needing predictable capacity for heavier battery-equipped vehicles, we push toward new equipment almost every time.

Either way, don’t skip the inspection and slab evaluation steps to save a few hundred dollars. A 2 post car lift installed without proper vetting is the single most common mistake we see turn into a much bigger repair bill — or a dropped vehicle — six months down the road.
