For someone storing three, five, or a dozen vehicles, floor space is the currency that matters most, and a two-post lift is the most floor-efficient way to double a bay’s storage capacity while still keeping full access underneath. Compared to a four-post lift, which needs a longer runway and works better for pure storage, a two-post gives a collector the ability to actually service a vehicle at the same time — swap shocks, drop an exhaust, inspect a fuel line — without needing a second dedicated service bay.

Most of the collector garages we quote in east-central Iowa land on a 9,000 or 10,000 lb symmetric model, since collector cars and light trucks rarely push much past that, and a symmetric design keeps the vehicle centered and stable for the kind of solo work a lot of collectors do themselves. It’s usually this first job — not the storage capacity — that makes a collector realize the lift paid for a chunk of itself in time saved alone, and it’s often the moment they start planning the next project car around having lift access.

Twenty-Year Total Cost of Ownership

A quality two-post lift, maintained on a normal schedule, lasts 15 to 20 years even in occasional-use collector garages — often longer, since these lifts see far fewer cycles than a commercial shop’s equipment. Spread the purchase and install cost over two decades and the monthly cost lands lower than most collectors expect, especially once you factor in what it replaces: jack stands, ramps, and the physical toll of working on cars at ground level for years.

The real cost variable over 20 years is maintenance, not the lift itself. Arm pads wear and need replacement every few years depending on use. Hydraulic fluid should be checked annually and changed periodically. And on cable-style lifts, the cables themselves are a wear item that needs periodic inspection and eventual replacement — more on that below. Collectors who budget a small annual amount for this kind of upkeep get a lift that easily hits the 20-year mark; those who ignore it tend to end up with a bigger repair bill somewhere around year eight or nine when something finally gives.

Cable Inspection for Low-Cycle, High-Value Loads

It might seem like a lift that only cycles a few times a month wouldn’t need much cable attention, but low use brings its own risks — cables that sit static for long stretches can develop rust at contact points, and infrequent cycling means a developing problem might go unnoticed longer between uses. We recommend collectors do a visual cable inspection every time before lifting a car that’s been sitting for more than a few weeks, checking for fraying, flat spots, or visible rust along the cable length.

Because a collector’s vehicles are often worth far more than the car in a typical repair shop, we’re more conservative with cable replacement intervals in these garages — every 3 to 5 years as a default, sooner if there’s any sign of wear, regardless of how few total cycles the lift has seen.
