The Site Survey: What We Check Before Anything Gets Ordered

Every install we do starts with a site survey, and for shops around the Iowa Great Lakes region that usually means checking three things first: concrete thickness and condition, ceiling height, and bay width relative to how the shop actually works. We want a minimum of 4 inches of solid concrete rated at 3,000 PSI with no major cracking near the anchor pattern, and we check for rebar or in-floor heat lines with a scanner rather than guessing. Shops with older slabs sometimes assume their floor is fine because a lift sat there before, but previous installs don’t always meet current anchor specs, and we’ve had to walk away from jobs where the existing slab simply couldn’t be trusted.

Ceiling height gets measured to the lowest obstruction, not just the roofline — HVAC ducts, sprinkler heads, and light fixtures all count. For exhaust and driveline work specifically, we also ask how techs currently move around under a raised vehicle, because that tells us whether the shop needs extra swing room for a transmission jack or a tailpipe cutter cart. A 2 post car lift installed without factoring in that floor-level workflow often ends up functional but frustrating, and frustrating equipment gets worked around instead of used properly.

Configuration One: Symmetric Columns for General Repair

The first configuration we quoted for this shop was a symmetric setup, where the columns sit evenly on both sides and the vehicle centers itself between them. Symmetric lifts are the traditional choice for general repair work — they’re straightforward to use, work well across a wide range of vehicle types, and give balanced support for underbody work directly under the vehicle’s centerline. For a shop doing oil changes, suspension work, and general diagnostics alongside exhaust jobs, symmetric columns are a dependable, no-surprises choice.

The tradeoff shows up specifically in driveline access. With symmetric columns, the column nearest the front sometimes sits close enough to the front wheel well that reaching a front CV joint or steering component means working around the post. For exhaust work toward the rear of the vehicle, this is less of an issue, but this shop was doing enough front-end driveline work that the column placement was creating real friction — techs were sliding the creeper around the post rather than working in a straight line.

Configuration Two: Asymmetric Columns for Exhaust and Driveline Work

The second configuration was asymmetric, with the columns rotated toward the rear of the bay to open up unobstructed space at the front of the vehicle. This is generally our recommendation when a shop’s primary work involves exhaust systems, transmissions, transfer cases, or U-joint service, because the offset gives techs a clear line from the front bumper to the rear axle with nothing in the way. Doors open fully without hitting a column too, which matters for shops that also do interior or seat work while a vehicle is up.

For this shop, we recommended a Rotary asymmetric 10,000 lb lift specifically because their driveline work skewed toward full-length underbody access rather than corner-specific jobs like brake service. The asymmetric configuration did require slightly more attention during the site survey to make sure the offset column pattern still cleared the bay’s support posts and rolling tool chest storage along one wall, but once we mapped it out, the layout gave the shop a noticeably more efficient workflow than the symmetric option would have.

Why We Recommended Asymmetric for This Shop

The deciding factor came down to how often this specific shop worked underneath a vehicle from bumper to bumper versus working a single corner. Exhaust and driveline jobs are inherently full-length work — you’re following a system from the engine bay back to the tailpipe, or from the transmission back through the driveshaft to the differential. A symmetric column sitting mid-body becomes an obstacle on nearly every one of those jobs, while an asymmetric layout stays out of the way for the entire run.

We also factored in vehicle mix. This shop saw a fair number of trucks and larger SUVs alongside sedans, and asymmetric columns tend to give trucks more usable door swing and step-in clearance, which matters when a tech needs to get in and out of the cab repeatedly during a job. Had this shop been doing mostly brake and tire work on a wide mix of vehicle sizes, we likely would have leaned back toward symmetric — the right configuration really does depend on what fills your bay day to day, not a blanket rule.

Prep Work Before Install Day

Once a configuration is chosen, prep work makes the actual install day faster and cleaner. We ask shops to clear a working radius around the bay, confirm there’s accessible power near the intended column locations, and note any underground utilities near the anchor pattern if the building has older or undocumented plumbing and electrical runs. For shops around the Iowa Great Lakes region with older buildings, this last point matters more than people expect — we’ve found unmarked conduit runs during drilling more than once.

We also confirm delivery logistics ahead of time. Lift columns and crossbeams are heavy, and if a shop doesn’t have a forklift on site, we plan around that during scheduling rather than showing up and improvising. Getting a 2 post car lift installed on schedule depends as much on this kind of logistics prep as it does on the mechanical install itself, and we’d rather spend an extra day confirming details than lose a day on-site working around a surprise.

Install Day and What Happens After

On install day, our crew anchors the columns per the manufacturer’s torque and depth spec, runs and tests the hydraulic and electrical connections, and cycles the lift empty multiple times before it ever touches a vehicle. We check that the safety locks engage cleanly at multiple heights and that the arms swing freely through their full range without binding on the columns — a detail that matters more with asymmetric configurations where arm reach is asymmetric by design.

After install, we walk the shop’s techs through safe operating procedure, including how to position arms for exhaust and driveline work specifically, since pad placement differs from a typical brake-service lift.
