It wasn’t. The hardest part turned out to be everything they assumed about their concrete, their ceiling, and their bay layout that simply wasn’t true. Myth: “Any 4-inch slab is good enough”

This is the single most common misconception we run into, and it’s the one that causes the most job-day surprises. A lot of shop owners assume that because a slab looks solid and has held up a lift before, or held up heavy equipment in general, it’s automatically rated for a two post lift installation. But post-and-beam lifts put enormous concentrated point loads through four small anchor patterns, not a spread-out footprint like a floor jack or a rolling cabinet. Most manufacturers, including Rotary and Challenger, require a minimum of 4 inches of structurally sound concrete with a minimum compressive strength rating, and that concrete has to be free of the expansion joints, cracks, and rebar-at-the-surface issues that show up more often than people expect in shops built in the 1970s through 1990s.

For a European-marque shop doing differential fluid service, where technicians are constantly loading and unloading vehicles under the lift, marginal concrete isn’t a someday problem — it’s a liability from day one. We always core-test or at minimum visually inspect and measure slab thickness before we ever commit to an install date. When we found out the West Des Moines shop’s slab had a thin overlay poured over older, cracked concrete, we caught it during the survey instead of during anchor setting, which saved them from a lift that would have failed inspection or, worse, failed under load.

Myth: “Ceiling height only matters for lift height”

Shops fixate on rated lifting height and forget to measure for the tallest vehicle they’ll actually service with the arms raised, mirrors folded, and any roof-mounted equipment like light bars or ski racks factored in. For a European-marque shop working on wagons, SUVs, and the occasional larger sedan up on the lift for differential fluid service, we measure actual overhead clearance from floor to the lowest obstruction — sprinkler heads, ductwork, lighting fixtures, and structural beams — not just the number on the building permit.

We’ve walked into bays with 14-foot ceilings that still couldn’t clear a raised lift because of a low-hanging HVAC trunk line nobody accounted for. That’s a site survey failure, not a lift failure.

Myth: “Power runs itself once the lift shows up”

Electrical is one of the most under-scoped parts of a two-post installation, and it’s rarely included when a shop assumes their existing outlets will work. Most commercial two-post lifts run on 220-230V single or three-phase power depending on the motor, and the amperage draw at startup is higher than steady-state running load. If a shop’s panel is already maxed out from air compressors, welders, and lighting, adding a new circuit means a panel upgrade conversation before install day, not after.

Myth: “Any installer can handle any lift brand”

For a European-marque shop, this consistency matters even more, because the lift is a daily-use production tool, not an occasional-use convenience. Myth: “The site survey is optional if you already know your shop”

Shop owners who’ve been in their building for years often assume they know their own concrete, ceiling, and electrical better than an installer walking in cold. Sometimes that’s true. More often, there are details — a slab repair from a decade ago, a rerouted electrical run, a beam added during a remodel — that got forgotten or were never documented. We ask questions most shops don’t think to ask themselves: has the floor ever been resurfaced, is there in-floor heat or radiant tubing in the install zone, and where exactly do the building’s structural expansion joints run.

For the West Des Moines project, a quick walk-through with a tape measure and a few pointed questions turned up a floor drain almost directly under one planned column location, which would have required either relocating the lift or the drain. Myth: “Installation day is the finish line”

Getting the lift bolted down and running is only part of the job. We walk every shop through a full safety-lock cycle test, arm pad height calibration for their specific vehicle mix, and a review of daily inspection points before we consider a job complete. For a differential fluid service bay, that includes making sure arm pads sit correctly under manufacturer-specified lift points so technicians aren’t improvising with wood blocks or wrong-size adapters.

We also register the lift for warranty, provide the manufacturer’s inspection checklist, and talk through ALI-recommended annual inspection timing so the shop isn’t guessing later. A 2 post car lift installed correctly should run trouble-free for years, but only if the handoff includes training, not just a working hydraulic system and a handshake.
