Choosing the Lift for Transmission Work, Not Just Storage

Transmission service puts different demands on a 2 post lift than routine oil changes or brake jobs. You’re removing a transmission jack loaded with several hundred pounds of dropped assembly while the vehicle sits raised, sometimes for hours, and you need arm reach that clears a jack positioned dead-center under the vehicle without fouling on the column. This shop landed on a 10,000 lb asymmetric model with telescoping arms and drop-end pads, which gave enough ground clearance for a transmission jack to roll in and out freely.

We also talked through overhead clearance early, since their building had 14-foot ceilings — plenty of room, but we still measured to the lowest duct run before finalizing the model. For a shop that mixes RV chassis work with lighter truck and car transmission jobs, sizing the lift to the heaviest realistic vehicle matters more than sizing it to the average one. We walked their techs through checking arm restraint engagement every single time, not just on the first lift of the day. It becomes muscle memory fast, but the first few weeks after a 2 post car lift installed at a new shop, we always recommend a slower, more deliberate check-in process while everyone builds the habit. On this shop’s unit, we specifically demonstrated what an uneven safety-cam disengagement sounds and feels like — a hitch or a lean instead of a smooth, level drop — so the crew would recognize it immediately if it ever happened. For a shop running transmission jobs regularly, where a vehicle might sit raised at a working height for a long stretch, safety-cam engagement isn’t a background detail, it’s the entire reason the lift is trusted to hold weight while a tech works underneath. We check it during every annual inspection, and we tell every customer to listen for that clean, even click on the way up.

The First Real Transmission Job on the New Lift

About three weeks after install, the shop pulled its first transmission on the new lift — a mid-size pickup that had been towing a travel trailer hard all summer. The tech raised the truck to a comfortable working height, engaged the arm restraints, confirmed the safety-cams caught evenly, and rolled a transmission jack underneath before dropping the crossmember. No surprises, no adjustments needed, which is really the best possible outcome for a first real job on new equipment.

What stood out to us when we followed up afterward was how much faster the job went compared to their old method of using a portable jack and stands for anything that couldn’t go on the RV lift. Raised, stable, and with full access around the vehicle, the tech estimated the job took about half the time it would have on the ground. What We Check a Year Later

A year in, we went back out for this shop’s annual inspection, which is standard practice for any commercial lift under regular use. Cables were within spec, anchor torque held, and the arm restraint pins showed normal wear with no elongation of the holes — a good sign the crew had been engaging them properly rather than forcing them. The safety-cam engagement was still clean and even on both columns, which told us the lift had been operated correctly through what was clearly a busy first year.
