We’ve walked into more than one independent shop where the owner already bought the lift, already picked a spot on the floor, and only then called us to schedule the install — and sometimes that spot doesn’t work for the vehicles they actually service. If your shop does a lot of exhaust and driveline work, the arm geometry and clearance you need are different than a shop that’s mostly doing brakes and tires. Configuration A vs Configuration B: The Exhaust Shop Comparison

Configuration A is what we typically install for a general repair shop: a symmetric 2 post lift centered in a 12-foot-wide bay, columns set for even door swing on both sides. It works fine for oil changes, tires, and brake jobs, but if you’re pulling driveshafts or dropping exhaust systems on longer vehicles, the symmetric arms can crowd your access to the rear axle and mid-pipe. Configuration B is what we push for exhaust and driveline-focused shops: an asymmetric 2 post lift with the columns offset toward the rear, giving more open swing space at the front doors and better arm reach under the rocker panels near the rear axle.

When we run the site survey for a shop like this, we’re not just measuring ceiling height and floor thickness. We’re asking what’s actually going up on the lift — trucks with long wheelbases, unibody cars, or a mix of both — and adjusting the recommended configuration accordingly. A 2 post car lift installed with the wrong arm configuration for your typical vehicle mix means techs fighting the equipment every single day, working around arms instead of through clear access points. That’s a bad trade for saving twenty minutes on install day.

Why the Site Survey Comes Before the 2 Post Car Lift Installed

Every install we schedule starts with a site survey, whether it’s a phone call walkthrough or an in-person visit depending on distance from our Ames base. We’re checking concrete thickness and age, because a 2 post lift depends on anchoring into slab that can hold the load — thin or cracked concrete is the single most common reason an install gets delayed or requires a concrete contractor first. We’re also checking ceiling height against the lift’s maximum rise, bay width against door swing, and whether there’s overhead obstruction like ductwork, sprinkler lines, or lighting that the columns or arms might hit at full extension.

For a Waukee shop doing exhaust and driveline work, we’re paying particular attention to floor drain locations and trench drains, since column placement sometimes needs to shift a foot in either direction to avoid drilling into a drain line. We also confirm whether the shop wants the lift oriented for drive-through service or single-entry, which changes anchor bolt pattern layout. Rebar close to the surface is actually more common than people expect, and it changes how deep and where we can safely set anchors. For shops doing heavier driveline work — pulling transmissions, dropping axles — the dynamic loading on the columns during lift and lower cycles is higher than a shop doing light tire work, so we’re more conservative about anchor spacing and depth in those bays.

We test-drill before committing to final anchor points whenever there’s any doubt about the slab. If the concrete doesn’t meet spec, we tell you before the crew shows up with a lift on a truck, not after. Some Waukee shops in older buildings have floors poured decades ago that are technically thick enough but brittle with age; in those cases we may recommend a baseplate-style lift instead of an overhead-anchor configuration, which changes the anchoring approach entirely and can be the better long-term choice for older slabs.

Ceiling Height, Overhead Clearance, and Arm Reach

A 12-foot ceiling is workable for most residential and light-commercial 2 post lifts, but once you’re working on lifted trucks or vehicles with roof racks, the math gets tighter fast. Arm reach is the other half of this equation. Longer wheelbase trucks need arms that extend further without the column blocking access, which is exactly why the asymmetric configuration tends to win for these bays. We check both dimensions against your actual fleet of customer vehicles, not a generic spec sheet, before finalizing the lift model and configuration for your bay.

Electrical and Air Line Planning Before Install Day

Most 2 post lifts run on 220V single-phase power, and the receptacle location matters more than people realize — running conduit after the lift is bolted down is a headache we’d rather avoid. During the site survey we identify where the power drop needs to land relative to the column with the hydraulic power unit, since that’s typically the side needing the electrical connection. For shops without existing 220V circuits nearby, we coordinate the timeline so an electrician can run the line before install day rather than after.

Air lines matter too if you’re running pneumatic tools off the same lift area, and we map out hose reel or drop locations so they don’t interfere with arm swing or column clearance. Getting this sequencing right the first time avoids a second visit and lets your crew start using the lift the same week it’s installed instead of waiting on a follow-up electrical appointment.

What Waukee Shops Get Wrong Without a Survey

The most common mistake we see is ordering a lift online based on price and capacity alone, then discovering during delivery that the bay is six inches too narrow for full arm swing, or the ceiling won’t clear a lifted truck at full rise. The second most common mistake is centering the lift in the bay without accounting for the specific service work — exhaust and driveline shops almost always benefit from asymmetric placement, and a symmetric setup installed by default leaves reach compromised for years.
