A 2 post car lift installed correctly will outlive the shop it sits in, but almost nobody prices it that way. Most owners look at the sticker price of the lift, maybe add install, and stop there. We recently worked with an off-road and overlanding builder near the Iowa-Missouri border who does a lot of alignment work on lifted trucks and Jeeps, and when we walked through the real 20-year cost of ownership with him, the numbers surprised him. This is that case study, broken down honestly, the way we wish more shops would think about it before they buy.

The Shop and the Job

This builder runs a small independent shop that specializes in lifted trucks, overland rigs, and suspension work. Alignments on a truck sitting six inches higher than stock are miserable on a floor jack and jack stands, and he knew a 2 post car lift installed properly would pay for itself in labor time alone. His bay had 14-foot ceilings and a slab that was thick enough for a standard anchor pattern, which made the physical install straightforward compared to some of the older buildings we work in near the state line.

Cables stretch and need adjustment or replacement, arm restrictor pins wear, safety locks need periodic inspection, and columns need to stay lubricated and clean of debris, especially in a shop doing alignment and suspension work where grease and grit are constant. Over a decade of daily use, this builder replaced cables once, replaced a set of arm pins, and had us out for an annual safety inspection each year.

None of that is expensive individually, but it adds up to a real number over ten years, and it’s a number that almost never shows up in the sales conversation when someone buys their first 2 post car lift. What it does buy, though, is a lift that keeps its factory tolerances and doesn’t develop the slow drift and play that turns a smooth alignment lift into a frustrating one. Cheap, deferred maintenance is how a good lift becomes a bad lift by year six.

Overhead vs. Baseplate: A Cost Decision, Not Just a Ceiling Decision

Because his ceilings were tall enough, this builder had the option of an overhead configuration, but he chose baseplate anyway, and the cost math backed him up. Baseplate columns are easier to service, easier to relocate if he ever reconfigures the shop, and don’t require overhead clearance planning if he adds mezzanine storage down the road. For alignment work specifically, baseplate also keeps the bay open above the vehicle, which matters when you’re working with tall trucks and need unobstructed sightlines to check camber and caster visually before hooking up the alignment rack.

The cost difference between the two configurations at install time is modest, but the long-term flexibility of baseplate tipped the decision. If he ever sells the building or the business, a baseplate 2 post car lift installed with a clean anchor pattern is also simpler for a buyer to evaluate and simpler for us to relocate if needed, which matters for resale value in ways people don’t think about until they’re trying to sell a shop.

Years Ten Through Twenty: The Payoff Window

That’s not a 20-year cost of ownership story, that’s a five-year story repeated four times, and it costs more in total than doing it right once. The single biggest variable in whether a lift lasts twenty years or five isn’t the brand name on the columns — it’s whether the concrete was verified, the anchors were set correctly, and someone actually maintained it.

For this builder near the state line, the decision to have a 2 post car lift installed by a crew that checked slab thickness, verified anchor spacing, and calibrated the arms before handing him the keys is the difference between a lift he’ll still be using in 2044 and one he’ll be replacing before his kids graduate high school. That’s the real cost comparison, and it’s rarely close.

What We’d Tell Any Shop Doing This Math
