The slab was original to the building, ceiling height was tighter than he expected, and he had no idea what the concrete thickness was under the floor coating. Beyond the arm restraints, every two post lift has a mechanical safety-locking system — often called a safety cam or safety lock — that engages at set height increments as the lift rises, so the load is resting on a mechanical lock rather than hydraulic pressure alone if a seal or hose ever fails. For a differential job specifically, where a tech is going to be under the vehicle for an extended stretch draining and refilling fluid, engaging that lock is not optional.

We spent real time on this with him because a mobile mechanic working solo does not have a shop culture reinforcing the habit the way a multi-bay commercial shop does. The routine we set him up with is simple: raise to working height, lower gently onto the safety locks until you feel and hear them engage, then confirm the lift will not settle any further before going underneath. It takes maybe ten extra seconds and it is the single biggest safety habit separating a well-run one-man shop from an accident waiting to happen.

The Actual Installation Day

Once the equipment arrived, our crew set the base plates according to the manufacturer’s footprint, checked the layout against his door swing and his workbench placement so the columns would not interfere with either, and drilled anchors sized for the slab thickness we had already confirmed. Getting a 2 post car lift installed in a single-bay space means every inch of clearance matters, so we double-checked column spacing against his specific vehicles’ wheelbase range before committing to anchor locations.

We ran the hydraulic lines, bled the system, and cycled the lift empty a dozen times before ever putting a vehicle on it, checking that both sides rose evenly and that the safety locks engaged cleanly at every increment.
