Why Electrical Comes First When You Get a 2 Post Car Lift Installed

Most two post lifts run on 220-230V single-phase power, drawing anywhere from 15 to 30 amps depending on the motor size and lift capacity. A 9,000 to 10,000 lb lift built for daily wheel bearing and brake work typically needs a dedicated 30-amp circuit on its own breaker — not shared with an air compressor or a welder. We see shops try to piggyback the lift onto an existing circuit to save an electrician’s visit, and it almost always trips breakers under load or, worse, damages the motor over time.

Before we schedule the install crew, we ask for a photo of the panel and the run distance from the panel to the lift location. If you’re in an older Urbandale building with a 100-amp panel already loaded with lighting, HVAC, and other bay equipment, you may need a subpanel before we can even get a 2 post car lift installed safely. A two post lift needs a minimum of 4 inches of solid, crack-free concrete for most residential models, and closer to 5 or 6 inches for a heavier commercial unit — with the columns anchored well clear of any rebar mesh, seams, or floor heat lines. We’ve had jobs where the customer told us the slab was thick enough, only to find rebar sitting an inch below the surface where an anchor needed to go.

If your shop has in-floor heat like a lot of newer Iowa builds, mark those lines before we arrive so we can plan anchor placement around them instead of through them. When the concrete, the electrical, and the ceiling height all check out ahead of time, a 2 post car lift installed in your bay is typically a same-day job. When they don’t, we’re troubleshooting on-site instead of bolting lift columns to the floor.

Overhead Bar, Ceiling Height, and Clearance for Wheel Bearing Work

Wheel bearing service means getting a vehicle up high enough to pull wheels, remove hub assemblies, and sometimes drop a suspension component — so lift height and overhead clearance matter more here than for a basic oil change bay. Most two post lifts max out around 68 to 78 inches of lifting height, and you’ll want at least 12 feet of ceiling clearance for the lift structure itself, plus room for the vehicle at full rise.

We’ve measured bays in Urbandale where the ceiling looked plenty tall until we accounted for HVAC ductwork or a sprinkler head sitting right where the overhead safety bar needed to travel. A working tire and alignment shop can’t just shut a bay down for a week. Most two post lift installations, once the concrete and electrical are confirmed ready, take our crew about a half day to a full day depending on whether it’s a baseplate or overhead model and whether we’re removing an old lift first. We schedule around your slower days when we can, and we bring everything needed for the anchor work, hydraulic hookup, and safety testing in one visit.

If you’re replacing an aging lift, we’ll also check whether your existing electrical and anchor points can be reused or whether the new unit’s footprint requires fresh anchor holes. Reusing a slab that’s already proven solid saves time, but we never assume — every 2 post car lift installed on a previous footprint still gets its own inspection before we trust it.
