Dealership bays vary more than people expect. Ceiling height is the more common limiter — a 12-foot ceiling works for most symmetric 2 post lifts at full rise, but anything with overhead-mounted equipment or a bay housing lifted trucks needs 14 feet or more to avoid clipping the crossbar or overhead safety bar at full extension.

We also look at drive-thru configuration versus front-to-back parking. An expandable top beam gives you flexibility for wide trucks one day and narrow sedans the next, which matters for dealerships servicing a mixed fleet of trade-ins. Getting the placement right the first time avoids re-anchoring later, which is expensive and leaves visible patch marks in a showroom-adjacent service floor that customers walk past.

Why Installation Quality Affects Trade-In and Resale Value

This is the piece most service managers don’t think about until it’s too late. A 2 post car lift installed poorly — off-level, under-anchored, or missing safety documentation — becomes a liability the moment you try to sell the shop equipment or transfer it during a dealership ownership change. Buyers and auditors ask for installation records, anchor certifications, and load ratings. Electrical Requirements and 220V Setup

Most commercial 2 post lifts run on 220V/60Hz single-phase power, drawing around 2.2 kW during lift cycles. We’ve had customers request installation of the lift mechanism only, with electrical handled separately by their own electrician — that works, but it delays the in-service date and sometimes leads to under-sized breakers or missing disconnects that fail inspection. We recommend bundling electrical into the same install visit whenever your building’s panel capacity allows it.

A dedicated 220V circuit with proper overload protection keeps the lift’s motor from cycling under strain, which extends motor life significantly. We’ve also seen imported lift models arrive already wired for 220V/60Hz out of the box, which simplifies things, but the quality of the internal wiring varies enough between manufacturers that we always test load and cycle the lift multiple times empty before signing off, regardless of brand.

Forklift Access and Moving Lifts Into Position

Not every dealership bay has forklift access, and that changes the install timeline substantially. We’ve moved 2 post lifts over 100 feet across a shop floor without forklift assistance, using pallet jacks, rollers, and careful rigging — it’s doable, but it adds hours to the job and requires clear floor space free of other equipment. Sites with pre-poured slabs, confirmed ceiling height, and cleared floor space move through install in a single day; sites needing concrete work or electrical panel upgrades take longer and should be scheduled with buffer time before a planned reopening date.
