It was how he made the decision. He did not shop on price first. He shopped on whether he could still buy a carriage slide block or a lowering valve for that machine in fifteen years. That instinct turned out to be exactly right, and it is worth walking through in detail.

The Shop: Heavy Vehicles, Low Volume, Long Jobs
The building was an older steel structure with a thirteen-and-a-half-foot ceiling at the eave, which is a gift in this business. Twenty-two feet wide, one overhead door, and a slab that had been poured in one pass sometime in the late nineties. He works alone with occasional help, and his job mix is nothing like a general repair shop. Where a corner garage turns eight quick jobs a day, he might have one van up on the lift for a week and a half while he fabricates a bumper, reroutes a wiring harness, and repacks wheel bearings.
That usage profile changed our recommendation. Low cycle count means the hydraulics see easy duty. But long dwell time under load means the mechanical locks and the carriage bearings matter more than pump quality. A vehicle sitting at full height for nine days is resting entirely on the lock pawls, not the cylinder. That is normal and safe on a properly built machine, but it puts a premium on lock design, ladder quality, and the integrity of the column welds. Heaviest vehicle in his rotation was a loaded Sprinter around 8,400 pounds. He also needed the doors to clear the columns, because clients show up wanting to sit in the rig and look at the interior while it is in the air. Every one of those details pointed toward a specific configuration.
Brand History Actually Matters, and Here Is Why
Rotary Lift has been building lifts since 1925 and effectively invented the hydraulic automotive lift as a category. Challenger has been at it since the late seventies and has spent decades in the commercial dealership space. BendPak came up through the eighties and nineties and has become the default in the serious home-garage and small-shop market. Atlas has built a strong value position in the same space. Those histories are not trivia — they tell you how long the part number will keep existing.
Here is the practical version. We regularly ship parts for Rotary units that were installed before the buyer’s technician was born. Cables, cylinders, arm restraint gears, lock releases, hose kits — all still available, still cross-referenced, still fitting. A lift from a brand that appeared on a marketplace three years ago with a made-up model designation has no such pipeline. When the power unit dies, and it will, you are hunting a generic replacement, hoping the mounting pattern matches, and rebuilding a hose assembly at a hydraulics counter. We have done that rescue job dozens of times and it always costs more than the money the buyer saved up front. Our Marion customer had watched a friend go through it. That was the whole reason he called us instead of clicking Buy Now on a 2 post car lift with a stock photo and a phone number that goes to voicemail.
The Configuration Decision: Asymmetric, Clear Floor, Ten Thousand Pounds
With thirteen and a half feet of ceiling, a clear-floor overhead model was available to him and it was the right call. He rolls a transmission jack, a bearing press cart, and a welding cart under vehicles constantly, and a baseplate channel across the bay floor would have been a daily annoyance and a place for grit to pack in. Baseplate is a great solution when the ceiling forces it — we spec it for buyers capped under ten feet all the time — but if you have the height, take the clean floor.
Asymmetric was the second decision, driven by the door-clearance issue. Asymmetric columns are rotated roughly thirty degrees and the arms are unequal length, which sets the vehicle back so the doors open past the posts. On a Land Cruiser with heavy aftermarket sliders, that clearance is not a luxury. Capacity landed at ten thousand pounds with three-stage front arms and drop-end rear arms — enough margin over the loaded Sprinter, and the three-stage fronts reach forward on a long wheelbase without stretching the pad past its safe extension. We also specified tall truck adapters and a set of frame-cradle pads for the vehicles with rock sliders where the pinch weld is inaccessible. Getting adapters at purchase is far cheaper than sourcing them individually eight months later.
Wheel Bearing Work Is the Real Test of a Lift
Anybody can do an oil change on any lift. Wheel bearing service is where the machine earns its keep, and it is the single most common job in this shop. On a solid-axle 80-Series you are pulling the hub, the knuckle components, repacking or replacing, and torquing a spindle nut to a specific drag figure. On the independent-front Tacomas and Sprinters it is a press job on a hub assembly with a lot of stubborn fasteners.
What this demands from the equipment is stability under lateral load. When you lean on a two-foot breaker bar at the end of an axle nut socket, you are pushing sideways on a vehicle that is four feet in the air. A well-anchored lift with tight carriage tolerances does not move. A poorly anchored one on marginal concrete makes a sound you never want to hear twice. It also demands the right lift height — you want the hub at chest level, not head level, so you can see and torque without a step stool. And it demands honest arm restraints, because the moment you shock-load a stuck fastener, the arm wants to swing. The arm restraint gear and pawl are cheap parts that do a critical job, and they wear. We tell every customer to check restraint engagement quarterly. On a properly set up 2 post car lift, a full four-corner bearing service that used to eat a Saturday on jack stands becomes a comfortable afternoon.
Install Day: Concrete, Plumb, and the Things That Go Sideways
We cored the slab before scheduling. It came back at six inches of good, dense concrete with no rebar visible in the sample, which is common and fine for a ten-thousand-pound unit — the anchor spec calls for depth and strength, not reinforcement. We laid out column positions with a chalk line, checked distance from the nearest control joint, and confirmed we had the minimum edge distance on every anchor location. In this case one column sat about nine inches from a saw-cut joint, comfortably inside spec.
The part that always takes longest is plumb. A two-post column that is out by even a small amount will bind the carriage and chew slider blocks. We shim under the base plate, recheck on two faces with a long level, torque the anchors in a cross pattern, then recheck plumb after torque because pulling anchors down can shift a column. Overhead beam went on next, then cables, then the hydraulic lines. Cable equalization is where a lot of self-installers stop too early — both carriages must rise and stop together, and the adjustment is iterative. We ran it through the full travel a dozen times unloaded, then cycled it with a vehicle, bled the system, and verified every lock engaged audibly at each ladder position. Total time on site was under a day. He was doing a bearing job on it the next morning. The Parts Pipeline After the Sale
Ten months in, he called about a slow drift — the lift would settle a quarter inch overnight with a van on it. That is a textbook symptom and it is almost never dangerous when the locks are engaged, which they were. The cause is usually a cylinder seal or a lowering valve that is not seating clean because of debris in the fluid. We shipped a seal kit and a filter, he did the work himself in an evening, and it has been solid since.
That is the entire argument for brand history compressed into one phone call. We knew the model, we knew the cylinder bore, we had the seal kit on the shelf, and it shipped that day. Contrast that with the calls we get about orphan lifts: no model plate, no manual, a power unit with a label in a language nobody in the shop reads, and a cylinder with a metric rod diameter that does not match anything in our catalog. What We Would Tell the Next Marion Buyer
Measure your ceiling to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. Know your heaviest vehicle loaded, not curb weight from a spec sheet, and buy a class above it. Core your slab or at least drill a test hole before you spend a dollar. Decide whether you need doors to clear the columns — if you do, asymmetric, and stop debating it. Buy the truck adapters and pad extensions with the lift. And pick a brand whose parts you can still buy when the machine is old, because it will get old and you will still be using it.
Beyond the hardware, plan the room around the equipment. Leave three feet of walking space on both sides. Put your air drop and your electrical within reach of the power unit side. Keep a drain pan station out of the swing path of the arms. And commit to the maintenance rhythm from day one: quarterly cable tension check, quarterly arm restraint check, grease the slides and pins, and an annual full inspection against the ALI checklist. A well-maintained 2 post car lift will outlast several of the vehicles you put on it and two or three of the compressors in the corner.
