The Setup: What a Cedar Falls Mobile Mechanic Runs Into

The mechanic in this case has been running mobile out of a service van for eight years, working driveways and small farms across Black Hawk and Bremer counties. Wheel bearing service on rear-wheel-drive pickups and larger passenger cars had gotten to be a bigger share of his work as the fleet aged. He’d been using a shared community shop bay a few times a month when he needed lift access, a common arrangement in northeast Iowa where multiple mobile guys chip in on rent for a bay with a used 2 post car lift.

Shared arrangements sound economical until the equipment falls between owners. Nobody owns maintenance. Nobody logs cycles. And the last person to notice a worn part is often the person who finally has it fail on them. That’s roughly what happened here. The lift he was using had been serviced by whoever felt like it, when they felt like it. He’d never looked closely at the arm restraint gears because he’d assumed the previous shop owner or the co-op partners were doing that. They weren’t, and the equipment record for the last three years was essentially blank.

What Went Wrong on the Rented Lift

Halfway through a rear wheel bearing job on a full-size pickup, he heard the arm-restraint gear tick, which shouldn’t happen with the vehicle stationary at working height. He set the safety, dropped it to the lower lock, and inspected. The gear teeth on one of the arm restraints were worn beyond the manufacturer’s spec, some teeth were sheared clean, others were rounded. Under normal load the mechanism was holding, but a lateral impact, say hitting the arm with a wrench, or shifting weight to remove a heavy caliper, could disengage a restraint that wasn’t fully seated.

He finished the job cautiously at the second safety lock, called us the next morning. What we told him: that lift’s arm restraints had reached the end of their service life probably two or three years earlier, and nobody had replaced them. Every 2 post car lift needs periodic inspection of the restraint gearing, and the exact interval depends on cycles, but semi-annual visual inspection is a bare minimum for a working lift. On his shared setup, that wasn’t happening, and no maintenance log had ever been kept.

How Arm Restraints Are Supposed to Work

On most modern 2-post lifts, arm restraint is achieved by a spring-loaded gear on top of each arm swivel that engages a matching gear cluster when the arm is lowered under load. As the arm rotates, the gear teeth mesh and lock the arm’s position, preventing it from swinging out from under the vehicle. When you raise the lift with no vehicle, the spring lifts the gear disengaged so the arms swing freely. When you set a pad against a lift point and start raising, weight forces the gear down and locks the arm.

The failure modes are: gear teeth worn from prolonged use, springs weakened from age or contamination, or debris packed into the gear housing preventing full engagement. All three had happened on the rented lift. The fix in that specific case would have been replacing both restraint assemblies, not a huge parts cost, but time nobody had been willing to schedule. On a 2 post car lift you own personally, that maintenance stops being someone else’s problem and starts being a line on your own calendar.

Safety-Cam Engagement Points We Inspected

Beyond the arm restraints, we also checked the primary safety cams on the columns themselves. The safety cam is the mechanical fail-safe that catches the carriage if hydraulic pressure fails. On the rented lift, we cycled the mechanism through each lock position and listened for a clean click at each detent. Two of the eight positions had noticeably weaker engagement; the pawl wasn’t dropping fully into the notch, likely because the return spring had lost tension over years of use.

A safety cam that partially engages is arguably more dangerous than one that doesn’t engage at all, because a partial engagement gives you the audible click that trains a mechanic to relax. Under sustained load the cam can slip further. This isn’t a scenario common on a well-maintained new 2 post car lift, but it’s absolutely a scenario on lifts that have been through multiple owners. When we spec’d his replacement lift, we prioritized brands with mechanical single-point safety release, a design where all safety cams release simultaneously from a single control lever, meaning either all cams are set or none are, no partial states.

Why We Recommended a Rotary SPOA10 Configuration

For this mechanic’s use case, wheel bearing service, brake work, occasional exhaust, we recommended a Rotary SPOA10 asymmetric configuration. Reasons: the arm restraint on the SPOA family is a robust mechanical gear system with a long service life, the safety mechanism is a single-point release meeting current ALI standards, and the asymmetric layout gives him door clearance for the wide range of vehicles he sees. Ten thousand pounds capacity handles everything a mobile mechanic services short of medium-duty trucks.

We priced it against a couple of alternatives, a Challenger CL10 symmetric and a BendPak XPR-10AS, and walked him through the trade-offs. He landed on the SPOA10 for the arm restraint pedigree specifically. When you’ve had a restraint fail on you, you don’t want to be the guy who bought the second-tier version of the mechanism that scared you. The specific brand is less important than the design pattern; any commercial 2 post car lift with a strong mechanical restraint and current safety certification will do the same job for a mobile mechanic transitioning to a fixed shop.

Installation Notes for a Converted Cedar Falls Bay

His shop bay was a converted 30 x 40 pole barn with a 12-foot ceiling and 4-inch concrete poured in 2016 when he built the structure. That’s a strong install setup; most northeast Iowa buyers have to work harder for that combination. We ran the anchors on a Tuesday, plumbed the columns Wednesday morning, and had the hydraulic system primed and running by that afternoon. The 220V drop was already in place from previous shop use, which saved him a half-day of electrician time.

One note specific to converted pole barns: the trusses in a pole barn often have shallower depth than a stick-built commercial building, which means the overhead assembly on a clearfloor lift can crowd the trusses if you don’t position the lift bay correctly. We positioned his lift with 24 inches of clearance from the nearest truss bottom, which gives him comfortable overhead access without any interference. Any Iowa buyer converting an ag structure to shop use should do this check with a laser level before drilling anchors on a 2 post car lift install, not after the columns are already going vertical.

Six-Month Follow-Up and What He’d Change

We called him at the six-month mark. Zero warranty calls, no complaints, and he’d probably run about 400 lift cycles in that window on a mix of passenger cars and half-ton pickups. What would he change? He said if he’d known how much easier good arm-restraint design would make his working day, he’d have moved off the shared bay a year earlier. The economic argument had been that the used bay works fine most weeks, but the near-miss had made the answer obvious in retrospect.

What he’d also change: he’d have run a second 220V circuit while the electrician was on site, in case he ever adds a scissor lift or a tire changer. Small item, but electricians charge trip fees, and it’s cheaper to over-run the electrical the first time than to add later.
