A 2 post car lift changes the economics of suspension work faster than any other piece of shop equipment, and nowhere is that more visible than in a small overlanding build shop where every rig gets its shocks, springs, control arms, and steering components touched at least once. We installed a two-poster last summer for a builder in the Des Moines metro who runs a one-man suspension and armor operation out of a leased 30-by-40 shop bay. His question at purchase time was straightforward: what will this machine be worth in eight years when he outgrows the space and needs to sell it? Here is the case study, with real numbers and real resale math.

The Builder And The Shop Space

The Des Moines metro shop is 30 feet wide, 40 feet deep, 12 feet 8 inches to the low ceiling truss, with a 10-foot roll-up door on the short wall and a slab that came back at 4-1/2 inches at 3,500 psi on the core test. The builder works exclusively on late-model Toyotas and Jeeps for the overlanding market — long-travel suspension conversions, coilover installs, control-arm upgrades, and roof-tent-ready roof-load rebalancing. His curb weights land between 5,200 pounds (stock 4Runner) and 7,000 pounds (fully rigged Wrangler on 40s with steel bumpers front and rear).

He is a one-man shop. He needs to work fast and he needs to work alone. That workflow drove the 2 post car lift decision more than anything else. On jack stands, a suspension job that requires wheel-off access on all four corners is a two-person job for safety. On a lift, one person can work every corner, torque every joint, and cycle the suspension through its full travel to check clearances without ever moving the rig. That labor efficiency is what pays for the lift. It is also what determines how long the lift stays useful when the business grows out of its current space.

Why The Lift Choice Matters For Resale

A 2 post car lift resells at 30 to 50 percent of original price at year 8 to 10 if it is a name-brand model with complete documentation, and closer to 10 to 20 percent if it is a marketplace unit with no paperwork. That gap is not trivial on a machine worth mid-four figures new. For a builder planning to move into a larger space in eight years, the resale multiplier was a real factor in the initial buy.

We spec’d a commercial-grade unit from Challenger with a full arm package, pad kit, and ALI certification. Delivered and installed came in around $6,500 with certified anchor set and load test. His projected resale at year 8, assuming he keeps the paperwork and does the annual load test, is $2,500 to $3,000. That means the net eight-year cost is under $4,000 on a machine that will save him roughly $10,000 in labor time each year. The math works. But it only works because the initial brand and paperwork choice preserved resale. Cutting corners on either would have collapsed the resale side of the equation. This is a decision most first-time buyers do not run because they cannot picture a future where they sell the lift. Every builder eventually does.

Suspension Work And The Arm Package

Suspension work on lifted Toyotas and Jeeps demands specific things from a 2 post car lift. First, the wheels need to hang free at full lift so control arms can be cycled and coilovers can be measured under no-load conditions. Second, the pad envelope has to reach the frame rail cleanly at both stock and 3-inch-lifted ride heights without stacking rubber blocks. Third, the arm swing has to clear aftermarket rock rails and rocker armor without repositioning mid-service.

We spec’d 3-stage front and rear arms with a full pad-extender kit (3-inch, 6-inch, and 9-inch screw pads) and rubber block adapters at three heights. That combination lets him park a stock 4Runner and reach the factory pinch points at low pad height, then park a fully-lifted Wrangler and reach the aftermarket frame pinch points at high pad height, all without swapping arms or hunting for adapters. On a job that touches four corners of suspension, that setup saves an hour of hunt-and-adjust time versus a base arm package. Over a year of about 200 suspension jobs, that is 200 hours saved. At his effective bill-out rate, the arm-package upgrade paid for itself inside eight weeks of operation. Every builder should run this math before ordering.

Ceiling Height And The Roof-Tent Problem

The Des Moines metro shop’s 12-foot-8 ceiling is tight for lifted Jeeps and 4Runners with roof-mounted tents. A roof tent adds 8 to 12 inches to vehicle height. On a fully rigged Wrangler at 80 inches stock height with a 3-inch lift and a 10-inch roof tent, you are looking at 93 inches of vehicle above the frame lift point. Add six feet of lift and you are at 165 inches — inside his 152-inch working ceiling by only a small margin.

We ran the worst-case math before ordering and it did not fit. Solution: the builder removes roof tents before service, either lifting them off with an engine hoist onto a rolling cart or asking the customer to arrive with the tent off. That workflow constraint is real but manageable. He now includes a line in his quote sheet asking whether the vehicle will arrive with roof-mounted gear. About 70 percent of customers say yes. He plans an extra 30 minutes for tent removal and reinstall on those jobs and bills accordingly. A taller ceiling would have simplified the workflow but was not available in his leased space. This is the kind of tradeoff every builder makes. Know it up front and you plan around it. Discover it after install and you are stuck.

Column Placement And Bay Traffic

The lift sits 14 feet back from the roll-up door on the long axis and centered on the short axis. That placement leaves room for a rolling parts cart, a small welding station in the corner, and a rig awaiting service parked behind the lifted rig without ever crossing the lifted vehicle’s shadow. Column faces are 108 inches apart, giving the builder room to open both doors on a full-width Wrangler when it is on the arms.

We rotated the lift about eight degrees clockwise from the shop’s long axis, which sounds odd but solved a real problem — his welder cable run and his air line drop from the truss happened to sit on that same diagonal, and the eight-degree rotation put the driver-side column against the natural walking path from the parts cart to the driver door without crossing either utility. It looked strange on the drawing. It works cleanly in practice. Small custom placements like this only happen when the installer walks the shop before pouring anchors. It is why we do free layout consults before quoting a machine. Fifteen minutes of chalk-line work saved this builder from a decade of small daily irritations that compound into resenting a machine that is not actually the problem.

Maintenance Schedule And Paperwork Discipline

To preserve resale, the builder runs an annual ALI recertification through us. That means a field tech visits, load-tests the lift to full rated capacity, inspects the cables and pulleys, and signs a fresh certification card. Cost runs $200 to $400 per year and takes about two hours. In eight years of operation that adds up to $2,000 to $3,000, which sounds like a lot until you realize it preserves the same amount in resale value. Skip the recertifications and the resale collapses.

He also keeps a manila folder with every receipt for parts, every load-test card, every install record, and the original purchase paperwork. When he goes to sell, that folder is the resale multiplier. A buyer walking in with cash to spend on a used 2 post car lift will pay top of the market range for a machine with clean paperwork and walk away from a machine without it. This is not a subtle effect. It is the difference between a $2,000 resale and a $4,500 resale on the same lift. Paperwork discipline is the cheapest resale strategy in commercial equipment, and it is the strategy every builder should adopt from the day the truck rolls up with the lift on it.

Twelve Months In: What The Numbers Say

Twelve months into operation, the Des Moines metro shop has completed 214 suspension jobs on the lift. Average job time versus his old jack-stand workflow: about 45 minutes faster per job. Total labor time saved: roughly 160 hours across the year. Value of that time at his billing rate: enough to have paid the delivered-installed cost of the machine and left margin. The lift is already profit-positive at year one, and its 20-year life curve stretches out ahead of that.

His planned move to a larger space is now on a three-to-five-year horizon instead of eight, because the throughput gains have accelerated his growth. When he moves, the current lift will either come with him if the new bay accommodates it, or it will resell to a next-generation builder for around $3,500. Either outcome preserves the investment.
