A Dubuque overlanding builder ordered a 2 post car lift from us for a purpose-built garage he was framing from studs up. His main vehicle is a full-size 4×4 pickup wearing a rooftop tent, an aftermarket bumper, a winch, and 37-inch tires. Weight climbed fast. His two service pain points were differential fluid changes at 15,000-mile intervals and gearbox drops when he found himself under the truck too often. We got involved before the concrete was poured, which is the ideal time to spec a 2 post car lift into a build. This is the case study from that job.

Overlanding Rigs Change the Weight Equation
A stock full-size pickup weighs about 5,800 lb. Add a steel front bumper, a winch, sliders, a rear bumper with tire carrier, a rooftop tent, drawer system, water tank, and 37-inch tires with matching rims, and that same truck rolls onto a lift at closer to 7,600 lb. That extra weight lives high and asymmetric, which is exactly the load profile a 2 post car lift is designed for. What it means for spec is that a builder who might have gotten by with an 8K lift for a stock truck really needs to be on a 10K minimum. We put this build on a Challenger CL10 10,000 lb 2 post car lift with three-stage front arms, and the capacity margin runs about 24 percent. That is the safe zone.
Sequencing the Garage Build Around the Lift
The best time to plan for a 2 post car lift is before the concrete truck shows up. We got the builder to spec his slab at 5 inches of 4,000 psi concrete with #4 rebar on 18-inch centers in the lift zone. That gives us clean anchor pulls and room to move the lift if he ever wants to shift columns. Ceiling was framed at 13 feet clear to accommodate a raised full-size truck. Power was pre-run as a dedicated 240V 30-amp circuit in conduit under the slab, terminating at the driver-side column location. When we arrived to install, everything was ready. Ceiling Height and Rooftop Tent Reality
The one gotcha with overland builds is the rooftop tent. A closed tent on a full-size truck typically sits at about 89 to 96 inches of overall vehicle height. Add the tire diameter you are lifting the truck off of, and you are asking a 2 post car lift to raise the roof of that vehicle to maybe 12 to 13 feet. On a 12-foot ceiling, you run out of headroom before the wheels leave a comfortable working height. The 13-foot ceiling on this build gave him just enough. If you are planning an overland build with a permanent rooftop tent and you have a 10 or 11 foot ceiling, you either drop the tent before lifting, plan on shorter working heights, or you rethink to a mid-rise scissor lift instead.
Anchor Layout and Slab Verification
Install morning started with a core sample near each planned column location. Slab measured 5.25 inches, and the mix looked dense with no voids. We laid out the columns using the lift manufacturer template, which fixes the between-column dimension and the front-to-back offset. Anchors are wedge-style expansion anchors torqued to spec, and we always run a pull test on the first anchor before we set the column. That first pull passed with margin, so we finished the anchor pattern and set the columns plumb with a laser level. This is the point in a 2 post car lift install where cutting corners will haunt you for the life of the equipment. We do not cut corners.
Wiring, Hydraulics, and First Cycle
Once both columns were anchored and plumb, we tied the top rail, ran the equalizer cables, connected the hydraulic lines from the power unit to the driver-side column, and ran the low-voltage control cable. Power unit got mounted at the driver column, filled with ISO 32 hydraulic fluid, and connected to the pre-run 240V circuit. First cycle was unloaded, checking equalization at every notch. Second cycle was with a small SUV to load-test at partial capacity. Third was the full-weight overland truck to full working height. Everything held pressure clean. On any new 2 post car lift, that first weighted cycle is what settles the seals and starts the break-in period.
The First Differential Service Under the New Lift
Two weeks after install, the builder posted a video of his first differential fluid service under the new 2 post car lift. Front axle drain and fill took him about twenty-five minutes total, because the diff cover was at eye level and both drain and fill plugs were easily accessible. On his old jack-and-stands setup, the same job used to take him two hours with a lot of complaining. He also did a driveshaft inspection and re-greased both U-joints in the same session. That is the day-to-day payoff of a properly sized 2 post car lift in an overland build. The tool itself changes what jobs you are willing to do.
Post-Install Punch List
We handed the builder a laminated daily and monthly maintenance card, walked him through arm restraint checks, cable tension inspection, hydraulic fluid level, and anchor torque verification at 30 days. We also scheduled a 12-month annual inspection so he stays inside the ALI Gold ownership program. A 2 post car lift is not a set-and-forget tool. It rewards discipline. In exchange, it gives you a decade or more of hard service on jobs that would break your back on a creeper.
