Why This Shop Needed a Low-Ceiling Lift in the First Place

Most RV and trailer shops we work with weren’t built with automotive lifts in mind at all. This particular Ankeny bay had roughly 11 to 12 feet of clearance and a slab that met the 4-inch minimum, but nowhere close to the 14-plus feet a full commercial two-post needs for full rise. The biggest lesson from this first year is that shops delay lift purchases longer than they should because they assume their ceiling height rules out a two-post entirely. It doesn’t. A properly specified low-ceiling model handles the vast majority of RV, trailer, and tow-vehicle brake work without requiring any building modification, and the capacity range available comfortably covers vehicles under three to four tons, which covers most of what a trailer shop sees day to day.

We’d also tell shops to be honest about actual use case rather than buying the biggest lift available. This shop didn’t need a 14,000 lb commercial unit, and paying for that extra capacity would have meant a longer wait for a taller-clearance model or expensive ceiling work.
