Both configurations lift the vehicle. Both do exhaust work, driveline access, brake service, and everything else a two-post is expected to do. But they solve different problems, and getting it wrong makes a five-figure equipment purchase feel like a chronic mistake. This side-by-side lays out the real trade-offs between overhead and baseplate, based on the exhaust and driveline work most independent shops do every day, plus the ceiling and floor constraints we see in older Ames commercial buildings.

What overhead means, what baseplate means, and where the difference actually is
An overhead 2 post car lift routes the equalizer cable and hydraulic hose through a horizontal safety bar that connects the two column tops. The safety bar sits about eight to nine feet off the floor, includes a padded shutoff pad in the center, and stops the vehicle from rising into the ceiling. A baseplate model connects the columns at the floor with a rigid steel plate that houses the cable and hose. The safety bar on baseplate models is missing entirely, meaning nothing spans the top and the ceiling is unobstructed.
Both do the same lifting work. The difference is where the cable lives, and that changes what you can drive in and out of the bay and how you use the floor. Overhead frees the floor but adds a beam to the ceiling. Baseplate keeps the ceiling open but puts a plate on the floor. Neither is universally better; the right one depends on the shop’s specific dimensions and daily traffic patterns.
Ceiling clearance — the top constraint you can’t argue with
Overhead 2 post car lift models need 11 to 12 feet of ceiling clearance minimum. The column is 8 to 9 feet tall, the overhead safety bar adds another few inches for the beam plus the shutoff pad, and you need clearance to raise the vehicle enough to be useful. A shop with a 9-foot ceiling, common in older Ames commercial buildings from the 1960s and 1970s, can’t fit a standard-height overhead model. Full stop and no way around it.
Baseplate models get around that. Because the beam is at the floor, the max lift height is limited only by the column height, so a 9-foot ceiling shop can still have a working lift. The vehicle just doesn’t go as high. Manufacturers offer low-ceiling variants of both configurations, but for most low-ceiling situations the baseplate is a cleaner solution. If you measure your ceiling and it’s under 11 feet, baseplate is likely the answer regardless of any other consideration on the shop floor.
Floor trip-hazard and cart-clearance — the other constraint
The baseplate itself is 2 to 4 inches tall and spans the full width between the columns. Every cart, dolly, tool cabinet, jack stand, and creeper crosses that plate every day. In a busy pro shop with lots of tool movement between bays, the plate is a chronic trip and roll-over hazard. Casters can catch on the edge, techs stub toes, and rolling floor jacks bounce as they cross. Some shops paint high-visibility stripes on the plate and that helps, but it doesn’t eliminate the issue entirely.
Overhead configurations remove the floor plate entirely. The bay floor is unbroken between the columns. Sweeping is easier, carts roll without interruption, and there’s no lip to bounce over. For independent pro shops in Ames where the same bay is used for oil changes in the morning and exhaust work in the afternoon, that open floor is a real productivity gain over the course of a day. It’s the biggest single reason we recommend overhead when the ceiling allows it.
Exhaust work — which configuration wins
Both configurations handle exhaust work equally at the lift itself. Where the difference shows up is with vehicles that have taller exhaust profiles, like pickups with dual side-exit stacks or 3/4-ton diesels with vertical stacks in the bed. On an overhead lift, the safety bar can conflict with tall stacks when the vehicle rises. Not always, since most passenger vehicles fit fine, but occasionally on a specific truck the shutoff pad hits the stack before the tech is ready to stop.
On a baseplate lift the ceiling is clear, so any exhaust height that fits under the shop ceiling fits under the lift. For a shop that does exhaust work on mid-2000s and later diesel pickups regularly, baseplate has a small but real advantage. For a shop working mostly cars, small trucks, and half-ton pickups, overhead has no downside on exhaust. This is one of the specific times we ask what the shop actually lifts before we recommend one configuration over the other. A 2 post car lift decision on this question needs the vehicle mix.
Driveline access — a real side-by-side
Driveline access on a 2 post car lift depends on arm geometry and clear space between the columns, not on overhead versus baseplate. Both give you the same access to the vehicle once it’s up. The one caveat: on baseplate models, the plate can occasionally get in the way of a transmission jack rolled under the vehicle from the front. Not often, since most transmission jacks clear the plate, but tall or oddly-shaped jacks sometimes have to be angled in from the side rather than rolled straight in.
Overhead configurations don’t have that issue. The whole floor is open. If your shop does a lot of transmission and transfer-case work where the tech rolls a transmission jack in and out routinely, overhead has a small edge. If most of your driveline work is exhaust and driveshafts done with a floor jack and stands, the difference is negligible. Long-term maintenance differences on both types
Cable inspection is easier on a baseplate 2 post car lift. The cable runs along the floor and is visible from above. Sheaves are at eye level when kneeling. Diagnosing cable wear on an overhead lift means climbing to look at the safety bar, which is inconvenient and often skipped. That said, the cables themselves last about the same amount of time in either configuration, since the wear happens at the sheaves and both types put similar bend loads on the cable across their working lives.
Anchor bolts and column plumbing are identical maintenance. Safety-cam pawls, arm restraints, and hydraulic hoses are similar. The one meaningful long-term difference: a baseplate model that gets driven over by heavy vehicles daily can develop plate cracks or corrosion in the housing. Most shops don’t drive over the plate at full weight, but if yours does (say the plate is inside a drive-through service lane) spec the reinforced version. That’s a small upgrade at order time and cheap insurance long term.
What we recommend for most Ames independent shops
For most Ames independent pro shops with 11-foot or taller ceilings, we recommend overhead. The open floor is a real day-to-day advantage in a busy shop, the exhaust work is a minor edge case, and the cable maintenance difference is small. For shops with ceilings under 11 feet, baseplate is the answer. The only exception is a specialty diesel shop with tall exhaust stacks and a tall ceiling; for them, we occasionally recommend baseplate specifically for the exhaust profile clearance.
Whatever configuration you choose, the 2 post car lift itself does the same core job. Getting the configuration right just removes one category of daily annoyance.
