A collector up in northeast Iowa called us a while back about a 2 post car lift for a converted dairy barn where he keeps eight vehicles — a couple of 1970s coupes, two AWD wagons his kids drive, and a truck he plows with. His immediate problem was a clicking CV axle on one of the wagons and no good way to get the wheel off the ground long enough to pull a half-shaft. His long-term problem was a ceiling he described as “tall enough, I think,” which turned out to be 10 feet 4 inches under a hay-loft floor joist. That measurement decided everything. What follows is his first year with the equipment, from the overhead-versus-baseplate decision through the first real service call we made out there.

The measurement that made the decision

He wanted an overhead unit. Almost everybody does at first, and for good reason — the clear floor means nothing to trip over, nothing to roll a transmission jack across, and no crossover tube collecting brake dust and grit. But an overhead configuration routes the equalization cables and hydraulic hose through a beam that sits above the highest point of the vehicle, and that beam eats ceiling height. A 10,000 lb overhead model typically needs 11 to 12 feet of clear height to reach full rise, and closer to 13 if you want a tall truck all the way up.

At 10 feet 4 inches to the bottom of a loft joist, he had two choices: cut into the loft framing, which in a hundred-year-old barn is not a small project, or go baseplate. On a baseplate unit the cables and hose run through a low channel bolted to the floor between the columns, so the columns themselves are the only vertical requirement — usually around 9 feet 6 inches to 10 feet 6 inches depending on model. He went baseplate, and honestly it was the right call for what he does. He’s not driving lifted duallies through the bay; he’s working on cars that sit low, and the crossover channel is a three-inch bump he rolls a creeper over without thinking about it.

Where baseplate genuinely wins

Low ceilings are the obvious case, but there are three more we run into constantly. First, barns and pole buildings with trusses at odd intervals — an overhead beam has to land where the structure allows, and a baseplate doesn’t care. Second, buildings with sprinkler systems or radiant tube heaters strung across the ceiling, where a top beam and a heater tube want the same six inches of space. Third, anyone who occasionally lifts something tall: a van, a camper shell truck, a box truck. With a baseplate there’s nothing above the vehicle to hit, so your only limit is the column height and your roof.

The trade-offs are real but manageable. The floor channel is a mild obstruction, and it does need occasional cleaning because dirt and hydraulic weepage collect in it. The hoses and cables live closer to the floor where a dropped tool can hit them, so we run them tight and covered. And on some baseplate designs the columns are slightly beefier because they carry more moment load without a top beam tying them together, which means a marginally larger footprint. None of that has bothered our northeast Iowa customer once in a year. He told me the only time he thinks about it is when he sweeps.

Install day in a converted dairy barn

The barn floor was the wild card. Old dairy barns often have concrete poured in stages over decades, with seams, drainage slopes, and thicknesses that vary by several inches within one bay. We core-tested at the four proposed anchor locations and found 5 inches at three of them and roughly 3.5 inches at the fourth, sitting over what used to be a gutter. That corner got cut out and re-poured as a footing pad tied into the existing slab, cured for a month before we came back. We also had to shim one column about three-eighths of an inch to get both plumb, because the barn floor slopes toward an old drain.

Delivery was its own puzzle. A semi couldn’t get up the lane past the grain bin, so the freight came on a straight truck with a liftgate, and he moved the columns with a skid loader and forks. If you’re rural and buying a 2 post car lift, sort out delivery access before you order — we’d rather spec liftgate service and a smaller truck than have a driver refuse the address. Once the columns were set, anchors torqued to spec, cables equalized and the locks tested under load with a junk car on the arms, the whole thing took most of a day. His 240V circuit was already there from an old milk cooler, which saved him an electrician visit.

The first real job: CV axles on an AWD wagon

The clicking half-shaft was up on the arms within a week. This is where a two-post earns its money over any other lift style. With the wagon hanging by its pinch welds the suspension drops to full extension, which gives you the maximum working angle to pop the outer joint out of the knuckle and pry the inner stub out of the transaxle. On jack stands you’re fighting for that angle with the strut partly compressed. On a four-post the wheels stay loaded and the axle is at operating angle, which makes the inner shaft nearly impossible to pull without dropping a control arm.

He did both front axles that first month, then a rear half-shaft on the other wagon, then an entire front-end refresh on one of the coupes — ball joints, tie rods, and a steering box. His comment to me was that the lift didn’t just make the work faster, it made him willing to start jobs he’d been avoiding for years. That tracks with what we hear from collectors generally. When a car has to come off the ground for three days on stands, it doesn’t get touched. When it goes up in ninety seconds and comes down in thirty, projects actually get finished. He also uses it as informal storage now and then, though we always remind people a two-post is not a long-term parking solution — that’s what a four-post is for.

Month seven: the service call

In late fall he called because the lift wouldn’t raise. Motor running, plenty of fluid, no visible leak. That exact description comes across our desk probably twice a month, and it’s usually one of four things: air trapped in the system, a stuck or debris-fouled check valve in the power unit, a lowering valve that isn’t fully seating, or a pump that’s cavitating because the fluid got cold and thick. In his case the barn had been down near freezing for a week and the reservoir was full of AW-46 that had gone syrupy. We cycled it a dozen times without load, warmed the oil, and it came back. We swapped the reservoir to a lighter AW-32 for winter and told him to run it up and down a couple times before loading a car on a cold morning.

The second thing we found was more important. One arm restraint gear had worn a tooth and wasn’t fully engaging, which means the arm could swing under load. That’s a genuine safety item and a cheap part. We replaced the gear and pin on the spot from the van stock. Anyone running a 2 post car lift should be checking arm restraints, cable tension, lock engagement, and anchor torque at least once a year. What the first year cost him — and what it didn’t

He’d budgeted in the mid-four-figure range for the lift itself, which is realistic for a quality 9,000 to 10,000 lb baseplate unit with decent arms and a name-brand power unit. On top of that: the footing pad repair, freight with liftgate, hydraulic fluid, our install labor, and a set of stackable adapters for the low coupes. All in, he landed maybe 40 percent above the sticker on the lift. That’s not unusual and it’s why we quote total delivered-and-installed cost rather than just equipment price. A 2 post car lift that shows up cheap and then needs a concrete pour and an electrician isn’t cheap.

What it didn’t cost him is the part he brings up. He priced out having a shop do the two CV axle jobs, the front-end refresh, and a set of brakes and rotors across three vehicles. Between labor rates and hauling cars an hour each way on a trailer, the equipment paid for a meaningful chunk of itself in year one. That math is different for everybody — if you do one oil change a year it never pencils out. But for someone maintaining eight vehicles who genuinely enjoys the work, a 2 post car lift is one of the few shop purchases that keeps returning value. How we’d advise the next collector who calls

Measure your ceiling to the lowest obstruction before you fall in love with an overhead unit, because that one number eliminates half the catalog. Test your concrete instead of guessing — “about five inches” and “3.5 over an old gutter” look identical from standing height. Decide whether you’re lifting cars, trucks, or both, since asymmetric column rotation and arm length matter more day to day than the capacity sticker does. Confirm your delivery access, especially on a gravel lane. And plan the 240V circuit early, because electricians book out further than we do.

Then think about parts availability for the next fifteen years. The brands we stock and install — Rotary and Challenger on the commercial side, BendPak and Atlas for home and hobby shops — all have supported part numbers we can pull off a shelf. Off-brand imports often don’t, and a worn lock ladder or a frayed equalization cable on an orphan lift becomes a fabrication project. We’ve cannibalized more than one abandoned bargain unit to keep somebody’s garage running.
