2 Post Car Lift Dimensions for a Third-Generation Urbandale Garage

A third-generation family garage in Urbandale called us last fall about adding a 2 post car lift to a bay that had run on a drive-on ramp system since the grandfather opened the shop in 1962. The owner’s father had done shocks and springs on that ramp for 40 years; now the grandson was ready to modernize and wanted real dimensions before he committed. We measured the bay three times, checked the floor slope, and specified the lift down to the anchor pattern before writing the quote. Here’s the technical breakdown he asked for and what we found on the site walk.

The Dimensions That Actually Matter

When we spec a 2 post car lift for an existing bay, we measure seven dimensions before we quote anything. Column footprint (typically 42 x 40 inches per column base plate), column height (114 to 152 inches depending on rise), overhead crossbar height (rise plus vehicle height plus safety margin), inside column-to-column width (108 to 132 inches depending on model), arm reach at max extension (67 to 85 inches per side), pickup pad minimum height (3.75 to 4.5 inches for a low car), and pickup pad maximum height (66 to 78 inches at full rise). Every one of those numbers has to fit inside the physical bay including doors, HVAC drops, storage lofts, and pedestrian walkways. The Urbandale bay measured 22 feet wide, 26 feet deep, with a 12-foot ceiling and a storage loft on the left wall that stopped at 9 feet. That loft ruled out overhead by six inches of ceiling clearance and forced a baseplate build — or would have. We found a design with a 141-inch column height and a 12,500-pound rating that cleared the loft with an inch to spare on overhead.

Column Height and Overhead Clearance

Column height on a 2 post car lift is the number that ends the conversation for most home and small-shop installs. Overhead designs range from 141 inches to 152 inches at the top of the crossbar. If the ceiling is 144 inches (12 feet) and the crossbar is 152 inches, the design does not fit — physics doesn’t negotiate. Baseplate designs solve the ceiling problem but cost about 3 inches of rise because the crossbar sits at the floor and eats a small fraction of the maximum lift stroke. For the Urbandale shop, the effective ceiling was 141 inches (the loft joist bottom) and we specified a Challenger CL10 with 138-inch column height overhead — three inches of clearance for the crossbar and a full 74-inch rise. We shot a laser from the pad to the joist bottom to confirm the number before we ordered. We do this every install where ceiling is tight. Overhead is preferable for a suspension shop because the crossbar is out of the way when a spring compressor is swinging around. Baseplate crossbars catch coil-spring compressor arms. That’s a real-world reason to fight for overhead when the dimensions barely allow it.

Rise, Ride Height, and Suspension Travel

Suspension work needs the vehicle high enough that the tech can stand upright under a fully drooped strut assembly. On a Camry that’s about 66 inches from floor to rocker pinch weld at full rise. On an F-150 it’s 74 inches. The 2 post car lift we specified for Urbandale has a max rise of 74 inches, which handles both. Rise below 66 inches means the tech works in a squat, which nobody sustains for a full day of shock replacements. Rise above 78 inches means the tech is on a step stool to reach the upper strut mount, which introduces its own risks. Seventy-four inches is the sweet spot for a general-purpose shop. Ride height on the pickup side matters too. A lowered Miata has 3.5 inches from rocker to floor at ride height. A jacked pickup has 12 inches. The pickup pads have to collapse to under 4 inches to grab the Miata and extend past 8 inches to grab the pickup. That’s what “telescoping pads” refers to in the spec sheet, and it’s a real feature not a marketing word. We spec pads that cover both extremes.

Freight Pallet Footprint on a Small Lot

The Urbandale shop sits on a corner lot with alley access and no loading dock. The 2 post car lift ships on a pallet 96 inches long by 48 inches wide, standing about 60 inches tall with the column crates strapped upright. The pallet needs to come off a lift-gate semi and roll into the shop through the 12-foot roll-up door. We measured the pallet path — 15 feet from truck to shop threshold, then 8 feet across the shop floor to the install pad. That’s not a lot of room to maneuver 1,600 pounds on a pallet. We coordinated with the shop to have the roll-up open at 8 AM the day of delivery and a pallet-jack rental confirmed. A residential-neighborhood shop with tight access needs freight planning as much as an urban warehouse. Freight surprise costs blow more small-shop budgets than the lift itself. We build every freight quote around the actual site, not a generic delivery assumption. If the pallet path is impossible for a driver to navigate, we coordinate a curb drop and rigging crew separately. That conversation happens before the order confirms.

Unloading Without a Loading Dock or Forklift

The Urbandale shop had no forklift and no loading dock — same as most small independents in older Iowa neighborhoods. The unloading plan was three parts. First: rent a 5,000-pound pallet jack from the local tool rental for the morning of delivery. Second: schedule two shop employees to be on-site during the delivery window. Third: pre-clear the pallet path with sweep and shop-vac so no small debris caught the jack wheels. The driver put the pallet on the lift-gate, lowered it to street level, and we jacked it into the shop with two people pushing. Total unload time: 22 minutes. The column crates came off the pallet with a shop-built A-frame and a come-along, tipped upright against a temporary wall brace, and staged at the anchor locations. Nothing about this is exotic — small shops did it this way for decades before the forklift was common equipment. What matters is having the plan on paper before the truck arrives. We supply an unloading plan template for every 2 post car lift order, filled out for the specific site. It’s boring and it prevents 90% of delivery-day disasters.

Concrete Footprint and Anchor Pattern

The install pad for a 2 post car lift has to be 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete at minimum. The Urbandale shop had 5.5 inches of 40-year-old concrete that tested to 4,200 PSI on a core sample — well above spec. Each column base plate anchors with six 3/4-inch wedge anchors on a 32 x 30-inch pattern, hammer-drilled to a depth of 4.5 inches. Total floor holes per column: six. Total across both columns: twelve. We drill after we set the columns dead-level with shims, mark through the base plate holes, pull the column, drill, then reset. Wedge anchors torque to 150 foot-pounds in a star pattern, snug then final. We check plumb one more time with a laser and shim as needed. The anchor pattern for this specific lift model came out of the manufacturer’s install manual, not out of our head — every model has its own pattern, and using a generic pattern is how columns come loose after two years.

Third Generation, Same Bay, Modernized

The grandson took over the shop from his father in 2022 and had been running the drive-on ramp system his father inherited from his grandfather. The 2 post car lift replaced that ramp in a single bay while the drive-on stayed in the other two — the shop kept doing brake and exhaust work on the ramps while suspension and drivetrain moved to the lift. That split-bay approach is exactly right for a shop transitioning generations without shutting down. We priced the lift at commercial mid-range with a 0% APR financing program that let the shop pay for it over 24 months while the ramp bays kept generating cash. Suspension revenue per bay-hour on a 2 post car lift runs 40% higher than on a ramp for the same job because the tech is not on his back on a creeper.
