A weekend hobbyist mechanic in the Iowa Great Lakes region called us about a 2 post car lift for his three-car garage. He wanted to do suspension work on a couple of restoration projects and was ready to buy — except he had no idea what electrical service he had in the garage or whether the lift would run on it. That electrical question is where a big chunk of home-garage lift buyers get stuck, and we’ve built a pre-purchase checklist specifically around it. We walked him through single-phase versus three-phase, panel amp draw, breaker sizing, and wire gauge before he called an electrician.

The Electrical Checklist Before You Order
Every home-garage 2 post car lift order we take starts with an electrical checklist. Seven items. One: what’s the amperage of the main panel serving the house (100A, 150A, 200A, 400A)? Two: is there a subpanel in the garage, and if so what amperage? Three: what’s the voltage available at the garage outlet (110V, 220V, or none)? Four: is the panel single-phase (standard residential) or three-phase (rare in Iowa homes)? Five: how far from the panel to the intended lift location? Six: are there other 220V loads on the same circuit (welder, dryer, dust collector)? Seven: is the garage wired with copper or aluminum? Every one of those matters for how the lift is wired and how much the wiring work costs. The Iowa Great Lakes hobbyist we worked with had a 200A house main, 60A garage subpanel, 220V single-phase available at an existing outlet, no shared 220V loads, and copper wiring throughout. That’s an ideal setup. We spec’d a 220V single-phase lift and told him he was ready to buy. Most buyers aren’t that clean on their electrical — we walk them through what needs to change.
220V Single-Phase vs 220V Three-Phase
Residential 2 post car lift installations run 220V single-phase, always. Three-phase power exists in commercial buildings but almost never in residential garages, and the lift motor for a home installation is single-phase by design. When a buyer sees “220V three-phase” on a spec sheet, that’s a commercial variant of the same lift model — not what he needs. The Iowa Great Lakes buyer had seen a three-phase spec online and thought he needed a converter. He didn’t. He needed the single-phase version of the same lift. This confusion is common and costs buyers money if they buy the wrong version and then need a phase converter to make it work. The specification difference is just the motor and the pump control box; the columns, arms, and hydraulics are identical. We ask every home buyer to confirm single-phase before we quote so we spec correctly. If a shop is buying and has three-phase available, we can quote the three-phase variant for slightly better efficiency at higher duty cycles. For a home garage running 1 to 3 cycles a day, single-phase is more than enough. This is not a marginal spec detail; it’s the difference between plug-and-play and a converter purchase.
Panel Amp Draw and Breaker Sizing
The 220V single-phase motor on a residential 2 post car lift draws approximately 24 amps peak at startup and 18 amps continuous under load. Breaker sizing is 30 amps for a dedicated circuit — that gives 20% margin over continuous draw plus tolerance for startup surge. Wire gauge follows breaker size: 10 AWG copper for a 30-amp circuit at runs under 50 feet, 8 AWG for longer runs. Neither gauge is exotic; both are standard residential wire. The garage subpanel needs enough remaining capacity to add a 30-amp circuit without tripping the main. That means the main panel plus other loads (garage lights, door opener, outlets, welder if applicable) can’t exceed the panel rating when the lift is running. Our Iowa Great Lakes buyer had a 60A garage subpanel with about 20A of existing load (lights, door, one outlet), leaving 40A available. Adding a 30A dedicated circuit for the lift kept him inside envelope with margin. The math is straightforward but the buyer needs to have opened his panel and counted the loads. We walk buyers through this on the phone before we accept the order.
Wire Gauge and Run Length
Wire run from the garage subpanel to the lift outlet determines gauge. Under 50 feet: 10 AWG copper. 50 to 100 feet: 8 AWG copper. Over 100 feet: 6 AWG copper. Aluminum wire follows the same up-sizing rule (one gauge heavier than copper for the same current). The buyer’s electrician runs the circuit; we don’t do the electrical work. We do provide the specification sheet with recommended breaker size, wire gauge, and outlet type (NEMA 6-30 typically). The buyer hands that sheet to the electrician and gets a code-compliant install. The Iowa Great Lakes hobbyist’s electrician quoted him a fair regional rate for the 25-foot run from subpanel to the lift outlet, plus the breaker install. That electrical work happens before the lift install so everything is ready when we show up. We coordinate the timing but we don’t do the electrical scope ourselves. This division of labor keeps the buyer protected — a licensed electrician certifies the electrical, and our lift install crew handles the mechanical. Both signed off, both documented, warranty intact. That’s how home installations should work.
Suspension Work and Motor Cycle Count
Suspension work on a 2 post car lift generates a specific cycle pattern. Up, work for 20-40 minutes, down. Repeat two or three times per project car. That’s a low cycle count — maybe 500 cycles per year for a serious hobbyist. Compare to a commercial shop at 5,000 cycles per year. The motor and hydraulic pump wear at cycle counts, not calendar time, so a home-garage lift will outlast the buyer at that usage. Motors on modern 2 post car lift designs are rated for 100,000 cycles minimum. A hobbyist doing 500 cycles a year gets 200 years of motor life theoretically — obviously the lift will outlast the buyer, not the motor. What does age at home-garage duty is the hydraulic seals, which harden with time regardless of cycle count. Plan on a seal kit around year 15-20. Everything else is essentially permanent at hobbyist usage. That’s the case for buying a real commercial-grade lift for home use even if the cycle count doesn’t require it — the lift becomes a lifetime tool.
Home Garage Wiring Realities
Older home garages in Iowa often present wiring surprises. Aluminum wire from the 1970s. Overloaded 60A subpanels. GFCI outlets that trip when a lift motor starts. Non-grounded circuits. Our checklist catches most of these before order. The Iowa Great Lakes buyer’s garage was updated in 2015 with copper wiring throughout, so no surprises. Buyers with older garages sometimes need panel work before a lift install, and we tell them upfront so they can budget accordingly. Panel upgrades run into real money depending on scope. That’s not our line item — it’s separate work the buyer arranges — but we flag it so they know. A 100A house main serving lights, HVAC, appliances, and a garage subpanel is often maxed out and can’t easily add a lift circuit without either upgrading to 200A main or shedding load elsewhere. Rare for us to sell into a house that literally can’t run the lift, but it happens. We steer those buyers to a smaller-motor design or a residential-grade lift with lower amp draw, or we recommend the panel upgrade first. Honest conversation up front avoids problems later. The 2 post car lift is only as reliable as the power feeding it.
