Ordering a 2 post car lift is the easy part of building out a hobbyist garage in Cedar Falls, and most weekend mechanics we talk to have the sequence exactly backward. Why the 2 post car lift decision drives your whole garage sequence
A weekend hobbyist who calls us in the middle of a slab pour has usually already made three or four decisions that will haunt him. The lift determines the concrete thickness, the concrete anchoring pattern, the ceiling height, the electrical drop, the bay width, the door swing, and the drainage. If you decide on a 2 post car lift after you pour the slab, you are betting on your best guess. If you decide on the lift first, every downstream number falls out cleanly. We tell every Cedar Falls hobbyist to pick a lift, or at least a family of lifts, before he calls the concrete contractor. It costs nothing to reserve a lift model on paper. It costs thousands to re-pour a slab or push a wall out. The sequencing question is the whole game.
Concrete first: what a Cedar Falls slab needs to be
The minimum concrete for a home 2 post car lift is four inches thick at 3,000 psi. That is the manufacturer minimum for a ten-thousand-pound lift and it is not a suggestion. In Cedar Falls, if you are pouring a new slab, we recommend five inches at 4,000 psi in the exact spots where the columns will land, with rebar in a proper pattern. That gets you a slab that can handle a lift now and a bigger lift later without a re-anchor. If you are working with an existing slab, we come out and core-test the concrete before we quote the install. Slab thickness is the one thing you cannot see from the top. Owners routinely believe they have five inches and end up with three and a half. A test core costs less than the alternative. Cold-pouring in an Iowa winter is not a good idea either; if the pour has to happen in December, insulate and cure properly.
Ceiling and door clearance for oil-pan work
Oil-pan gasket work does not require the vehicle to be all the way at the top of the lift, but it does require enough room to stand upright under it. A comfortable working height for a six-foot hobbyist under an oil pan is about six-and-a-half feet of clearance from the pan to the floor. That means a 2 post car lift needs to raise the vehicle enough for that gap while the columns still fit under the ceiling. On a typical home garage with a nine-foot ceiling, you can lift a passenger car high enough to stand under, but you cannot lift a full-size SUV that high because the roof will hit. On a ten-foot ceiling, you can lift most vehicles. On a twelve-foot ceiling, you can lift anything reasonable. Overhead door height matters separately, because the vehicle has to enter the bay and clear the top-of-door on the way in.
Electrical: the 220V drop we wish more hobbyists ran early
A modern home 2 post car lift runs on 220V single-phase, and it needs a dedicated 30-amp circuit. If your garage was wired for a workshop with regular outlets and a light or two, you almost certainly need to run new electrical. We wish more Cedar Falls hobbyists ran the 220V drop before they finished the walls. Running conduit through open studs is a Saturday afternoon. Running it through finished drywall is a week and a lot of patching. When we come out for a quote, we mark the exact spot where the disconnect box needs to be, in easy reach of the operator but out of the drive-through path. If you are working with an electrician, hand him our spec sheet and the lift model number before he pulls wire. Nothing is worse than an install day held up because the power is on the wrong side of the room.
Bay layout: creeper, drain pan, and stool at pan-height
An oil-pan gasket job has more equipment on the floor than most hobbyists remember. A creeper for the initial approach, a drain pan for the old oil, a stool for the actual gasket work, a torque wrench and sockets for the pan bolts. Every piece of that setup needs a floor spot that does not require you to squeeze around a column. On a 2 post car lift with a twelve-foot column spread, you have plenty of room. On one with a nine-foot spread, you do not. We size the lift to the bay and we recommend the extra foot of column spread on any bay that will do heavier engine work, because that foot is the difference between a comfortable Saturday and a frustrating one. It is also the difference between a lift that ages with you and one you outgrow.
Order of operations: pouring, framing, delivering the lift
The right sequence is this. Pick the lift on paper. Run the concrete design against the lift spec. Pour the slab, or core-test the existing slab. Frame or finish walls with the electrical and ceiling clearances accounted for. Schedule the 220V drop. Schedule the lift freight for after the slab is cured (twenty-eight days minimum for full strength). Coordinate the install crew to arrive the day after the lift lands. On a Cedar Falls install we ran last fall, we did the whole sequence in about six weeks from initial call to lift-in-use. On another that had the slab poured before we were called, we spent two weeks working around bad anchor spacing. The order matters. If you are starting fresh, start with the lift.

Before you commit to a 2 post car lift, walk this list. Do you know your slab thickness and strength. Do you know your ceiling height at the exact install point. Do you have a 220V drop or a plan for one. Have you measured the widest vehicle you will actually lift. Do you have door clearance to drive the lifted vehicle out if needed. Have you thought about ventilation for any engine work. Have you got a plan for freight receipt when the semi arrives.
