A weekend hobbyist mechanic in Marion emailed us a great question last summer: he was building a new detached garage and wanted to know at what stage of the build he should be committing to the 2 post car lift model, because sequencing mattered. The ceiling framing, the slab thickness, the door height, the electrical panel — all of it depends on which lift is going in. He was right to ask. Too many home garages get built first and shopped for a lift second, and then the owner discovers the ceiling is six inches too low or the slab is an inch too thin. Pick the lift before you break ground

The single biggest mistake we see on new-build garages is committing to slab and ceiling dimensions before picking the 2 post car lift model. The lift is the largest fixed object in your garage. Its column height, ceiling clearance requirement, drive-through arm swing, and column-to-column spacing all dictate the minimum interior dimensions of the building. Pick the lift first, then design the garage around it. That single reversal of order avoids ninety percent of the regret we hear about.

For a weekend hobbyist in Marion working on a project car plus daily drivers, a 10,000-pound residential-grade two-post is the honest starting point. It handles anything up to a 7,500-pound half-ton pickup with margin, has arm geometry that fits low-body sports cars and lifted trucks, and ships in a footprint that fits a standard 24-by-24 detached garage. Once you have that model in mind, the rest of the build sequence falls into place. Column height, overhead clearance, arm reach, hydraulic hose routing — all of it becomes design input rather than late-stage compromise. Ceiling height: the number that decides everything

Ceiling height is where most home garage builds fail. A standard 2 post car lift with overhead crossbar wants twelve to fourteen feet of clear ceiling at the column line to accommodate the crossbar plus the tallest vehicle you plan to lift. A base-plate model — with the equalization bar running through the floor between the columns rather than overhead — drops the ceiling requirement to roughly ten to eleven feet but adds a bar you have to step over between the columns. That trade is real. For a hobbyist doing daily maintenance and restoration work, the overhead style is generally cleaner unless the ceiling truly cannot be built taller.

In Marion, most residential zoning allows a detached garage up to a specified height at the ridge, and the wall height inside the truss line is what matters. Design for fourteen feet of interior clear height under the truss chord if you can. If a truss chord runs across the lift centerline at twelve-and-a-half feet, that is your effective ceiling. Draw the lift into the garage plan at scale — column height, crossbar, and tallest anticipated vehicle stacked from the floor — and confirm you have six inches of headroom over the whole assembly. That drawing is worth ten reversed decisions. Every builder we have worked with in the metro will accommodate the request if you make it before the trusses are ordered.

Slab thickness and prep: pour to spec, not to code

The slab is the second sequencing decision. Residential garage code minimum in most Iowa jurisdictions is a four-inch slab of 3,000 PSI concrete. That is exactly the minimum spec for most 10,000-pound 2 post car lift models. Meeting code and meeting the lift are the same number, which is convenient — but only if the pour actually hits four inches everywhere and the concrete is genuinely 3,000 PSI. On a residential pour without inspection, both assumptions are optimistic.

We tell every hobbyist customer building new to spec the slab at six inches instead of four, with rebar on twelve-inch centers rather than wire mesh, and to require the concrete supplier to deliver a certificate of PSI at pour time. That upgrade adds a few hundred dollars to the pour cost and buys you a lifetime of anchor confidence. If you go with a four-inch slab, you are at the minimum, which means any spec miss — a shallow section, a weak batch, an unstable base — puts you below spec. Six inches with rebar is above spec everywhere and lets you install any two-post you ever want without a second thought. Sequence the slab decision before the pour is scheduled. It is the cheapest upgrade you will ever make to a garage.

Electrical panel: don’t undersize the sub

The electrical panel in a detached garage is usually a subpanel fed from the main service in the house. A 2 post car lift powerhead pulls 20 to 25 amps at 240 volts single-phase, which is well inside the capacity of a 60- or 100-amp subpanel. What trips people up is running the subpanel too small in the first place. A 60-amp sub with a lift, an air compressor, a welder, and shop lighting is going to trip breakers on the day you use everything at once. That is a Saturday of frustration.

Spec a 100-amp subpanel at minimum for any hobbyist garage that will host a 2 post car lift plus normal shop equipment. Have your electrician run a dedicated 240-volt circuit to the lift location with a disconnect switch within twelve feet of the powerhead, per lift manufacturer requirements. Rough in the conduit before drywall goes up. You do not want to fish wire through a finished garage. This sequence — panel first, rough-in second, drywall third, lift fourth — is what a professional shop build looks like. Any electrician in the Marion area can do this scope in a day and a half if you have the drawings ready and the panel decision made ahead of time.

Door height and access: get the lift into the building

An easy-to-miss sequencing item is the garage door itself. A 2 post car lift ships on a pallet that stands roughly six to seven feet tall crated. Once uncrated, a single column is roughly ten to eleven feet long — longer than any residential garage door is wide, so columns come in vertical or angled through the door. If your door is nine feet tall, columns fit standing on their base plate. If your door is seven feet tall, you tilt the column at an angle to walk it through. Either works, but knowing which is which before delivery day prevents surprises.

The other access consideration is turning radius inside the garage. Once columns are inside, you need clear floor to stage them on their sides, uncoil hydraulic hoses, and route equalization cables. Twelve by twenty feet of clear floor is enough for setup. That is why we recommend not filling the garage with tools and workbenches until after the lift is installed. Sequence the build in order: slab, framing, electrical rough, drywall, garage door, lift install, then tool and cabinet buildout. Reversing that order makes install day miserable. Anchoring and torque: the day of install

Once the garage is built and the 2 post car lift is delivered, install day is a well-understood sequence. Position the columns on the slab per the manufacturer’s centerline dimension, verify plumb with a laser or spirit level, mark anchor locations, drill with a rotary hammer to the specified depth, blow out the holes, drive the wedge anchors, and torque to spec with a calibrated wrench. Then hoist the crossbar into place, connect the hydraulic hoses, route the equalization cables, fill the reservoir, and cycle the lift empty three times to purge air.

A first-time DIY install for a mechanically-competent hobbyist runs six to eight labor-hours for two people on a lift with a good manual. First cycle: your Saturday shakedown

The Saturday after install is your shakedown weekend. Bring your daily driver into the bay first — something you know the weight of, something with easy-to-find lift points, something you are not afraid to have on the arms while you learn the ritual. Set the arm restraints under the pinch welds, raise the lift to knee height, walk around and confirm all four pads are seated, then lower back down and reset. Repeat three times. Every 2 post car lift has personality — the arms swing a specific way, the safety cams click at specific heights, the powerhead has a specific speed — and you learn it by cycling with a familiar vehicle.

After the shakedown, put the daily driver back on and take it up to normal working height. Look at the pads, look at the arm restraints, listen to the safety cams. This is when you spot anything the install missed. If a pad is not fully engaged, if a restraint does not click, if a safety cam skips a tooth — call us before you put a project car on the lift.
