He asked good questions — what the warranty actually covers, how to spot arm-restraint wear, and what our claim workflow looks like when a locking pawl starts skipping. Why a 2 post car lift makes sense for CV axle work

CV axle and half-shaft work needs the wheels hanging free with the drivetrain fully articulated. A 4-post keeps the suspension loaded and forces you to pull the axle at an angle you don’t actually work at. A 2 post car lift puts the vehicle on the frame, drops the wheels into space, and lets the axle come out on the same plane the shaft normally rides. For a shop doing five to ten CV replacements a week, that alone shaves ten minutes a job.

The tire shop in the Great Lakes area we mentioned had been fighting a low-rise scissor for two years before he called us. He was replacing more axles than he was doing alignments, and every job started with jack stands under the frame, wheels off, and a creeper. Once we installed his new equipment he stopped losing time on setup. His techs could pop a hood latch, drop an arm, position pads at the OEM pinch-weld points, and be lifting inside three minutes. The savings compound: fewer stands to trip over, fewer awkward angles on the ratchet, and cleaner boot installations because you’re not fighting gravity on the seal. A 2 post car lift isn’t glamorous, but for CV work it earns its bay space quickly, and it opens the door to alignment prep, brake service, and exhaust jobs on the same footprint.

Reading the data plate: capacity, rise, and duty cycle

Every 2 post car lift we sell carries a data plate riveted to a column, and knowing how to read it is the first safety habit we teach. Capacity is the top-line number — usually 9,000, 10,000, 12,000, or 15,000 pounds — and it’s the total vehicle weight the columns can hold, split evenly across the arms. The gotcha is arm-tip capacity: a 10,000-pound rated column set will list a per-pad maximum, and a heavy pickup with a loaded bed can exceed the front-pad or rear-pad limit even when the total weight is under the sticker.

Rise is the distance from the arm-pad’s lowest working point to full extension, and it drives the height under vehicle you actually work at. Most commercial two-posts we install give 74 to 78 inches of rise. Duty cycle is the least-discussed number — it’s how many lift cycles the hydraulic pump is rated for in an eight-hour day. Commercial-grade Rotary and Challenger equipment we stock is rated for continuous cycling; a home-garage BendPak or Atlas is not. A tire and alignment shop doing forty CV axles a week needs a commercial data plate on the column, not a residential one, and our team spec’s every quote to match your actual workload rather than the number of vehicles on the floor plan.

Warranty basics — what the paperwork actually covers

Warranty questions come up on every phone call, and the honest answer is that a 2 post car lift warranty is a document, not a promise. The document from Rotary covers structural steel for 25 years, cables and hydraulic components for two, and electrical and wear parts for one. Challenger runs a similar structure. Home-garage BendPak and Atlas are shorter — five years structural, one year everything else — because the equipment is priced and duty-rated differently.

What the document does NOT cover is where most surprises happen. Damage from lifting outside the pad-placement diagram is out. Damage from an ungrounded pit or a cracked slab is out. Corrosion from a wash bay without drainage is out. Adjustment items — arm restraints, locking latches, cable tension — are wear parts, not warranty parts, and they’re the exact items a safety-first shop tunes quarterly. The warranty is a floor: it protects you against a factory defect in a column weld or a bad hydraulic seal. It does not protect you against skipping a pre-shift inspection. When the tire shop in the Iowa Great Lakes area called us with a stuttering pawl three months in, we walked him through the diagnosis before we filed anything — because half the calls we get end with a $12 adjustment, not a claim.

Arm setup and pad placement for CV axle work

The lifting arms are the part of a 2 post car lift most operators underuse. On a symmetric column the arms swing equally front and back; on an asymmetric setup the columns rotate roughly 30 degrees and the front arms are shorter than the rear. For a tire-and-alignment shop that sees mostly car and small-SUV work, asymmetric is almost always the right pick — the door clearance is better, and the front-tire access we need for CV work is uninterrupted.

Pad placement is where operators get sloppy and where the warranty stops helping. Every manufacturer publishes a pinch-weld diagram, and the golden rule is that the pad sits directly under a factory jacking point, not on the rocker skin, the floor pan, or a bracket. Modern unibody cars will flex if you land under the rocker; you’ll dimple sheet metal and, on a bad day, kink a fuel line. Our team teaches every new tech to walk the vehicle before lifting: identify the four points, chock a rear wheel while the lift is low, run the pads up in half-inch increments to first contact, verify each arm is locked in the arm-restraint gear, then lift the remaining inch to full contact. The habit takes 30 seconds and it’s the single biggest predictor of a shop’s incident-free record on a 2 post car lift.

The pre-lift safety walkaround we teach every tech

Before the first CV axle of the day, our recommended walkaround is six items and takes about a minute. First, look at both columns for anything hanging from the top — extension cords, hoses, tools stashed on the crossbar. Second, cycle the lift once empty from full down to full up with the safety locks engaging audibly on the way; you’re listening for the click of each pawl in each column and confirming the cables are seated in the sheaves. Third, check the arm restraints — they should snap into gear when you swing the arms, and the arm should not lift off the pad without a manual release.

Fourth, look at the concrete around each anchor. Cracks radiating from the base plate mean the anchors are working loose and the lift needs to come down and be rebolted before another vehicle goes up. Fifth, wipe the pad tops so you’re seeing metal, not grease — grease under a pad is a slip and the biggest single cause of drops we see reported. Sixth, walk the vehicle: verify jacking-point rust condition, confirm nobody left a jack in the way, and eyeball the drivetrain angle. On a 2 post car lift doing steady axle work these six checks run parallel to the coffee pouring, and they save a career.

Filing a warranty claim — parts, labor, documentation

When a warranty question does turn into a real claim, we run the paperwork in-house. The customer calls us, we open a case with the manufacturer, we ship the replacement part, and we bill labor for the installation — except that on a Rotary or Challenger claim, labor is not covered after the first 90 days, so the shop pays for the wrench time and we work down the invoice. What the customer needs to have ready is straightforward: the lift serial number (it’s on the column data plate we mentioned), the install date, and a description of the failure that matches something a Rotary tech can diagnose over the phone.

Documentation is where claims get denied. If you don’t have your monthly ALI inspection sheet, if the cable-tension log is blank, if there’s no record that arm restraints have been checked in the last quarter, the manufacturer can and will point to owner-neglect and close the case. Our install team leaves every new customer with a printed inspection log, a wall-mounted pad-placement diagram, and a laminated ALI checklist. Keeping that log up to date is a fifteen-minute-a-month job. It’s the difference between a $400 pump replacement covered under warranty and a $1,600 pump replacement charged to the shop, and every buyer of a 2 post car lift should build that habit day one.
