A tire-and-alignment shop owner in northwest Iowa told us his crew had gotten so fast at oil changes that they stopped listening for the safety locks. Twelve to fifteen cars a day, up eighteen inches, drain, filter, fill, down. Nobody was raising anything to full height, so nobody was waiting for the clicks. Then a Grand Cherokee shifted about an inch on the rear arms when a tech leaned into it with a filter wrench, and everyone in the building suddenly cared a great deal about arm restraint gears and safety cam engagement. Nothing hit the floor. But that is the exact call we get two or three times a year, and every time it traces back to the same handful of habits around a 2 post car lift.

What an Arm Restraint Actually Does — and What It Doesn’t
The arm restraint on a two-post is a toothed gear and pawl assembly at the base of each swing arm. As the carriage leaves the floor, the pawl drops into the gear and locks that arm at whatever angle you set it. Its job is narrow and specific: it stops the arm from swinging out from under the vehicle’s lift point once the load is airborne. It is not a load-bearing device, it does not hold weight, and it does not compensate for a bad pad placement. If the pad is sitting on a rocker panel instead of a pinch weld, a perfectly functioning restraint will hold that bad placement right up until the sheet metal folds.
Two failure modes show up constantly in the field. The first is a worn or broken restraint gear — the teeth round off after years of arms being kicked into position under partial load, and eventually the pawl skates over the gear instead of seating. The second is a restraint that never engages because someone lifted the pawl and wedged it, usually because it was clicking annoyingly during arm positioning. We have found zip ties, welding rod, and once a bent 10 mm wrench holding pawls up. On a busy alignment-and-tire floor doing quick fluid service all day, the arms get repositioned more than almost any other setting, which means the restraint gears on that kind of 2 post car lift wear faster than they do in a general repair bay. Grab each arm at full extension with the lift down and try to swing it. Then raise the vehicle a few inches and try again. If it moves the second time, stop using that arm today.
Safety Cams: Listening for the Clicks, Then Setting the Lock
The mechanical locks on a two-post are a ladder of slots up the inside of each column with a spring-loaded pawl on each carriage. As the carriage rises, that pawl rides over each slot and drops in — that is the clicking you hear. The critical detail almost everyone gets wrong is that the clicking does not mean the lift is locked. It means the pawl passed a slot. The lift is only on its mechanical locks after you raise it past your working height and then lower it slightly so both carriages settle down onto the same pawl position, taking hydraulic pressure out of the equation.
That is the step the northwest Iowa shop was skipping. At eighteen inches for an oil change they were holding the vehicle on hydraulic pressure alone — cylinder, hose, seals, and a check valve standing between a tech’s head and a two-ton vehicle. Hydraulics are reliable right up until a seal weeps or a hose fitting lets go. The locks are steel on steel. Set them every single time, regardless of height, and listen for both sides to catch. If one side clicks and the other doesn’t, or if the lock releases with an obvious lurch on one column, your equalization cables are out of adjustment and the carriages are no longer traveling together. Pad Placement on Quick-Service Work Is Where Complacency Bites
Oil changes and fluid service create a specific risk profile because the lift height is low, the job is short, and the temptation to freehand the pads is enormous. A tech who has done four Silverados in a row develops muscle memory, then a Malibu rolls in and the memory is wrong. On unibody cars the lifting points are the reinforced pinch welds — usually marked with a notch, an arrow, or a plastic pip — and the pad has to sit squarely under that seam with the arm perpendicular to it, not raking across at an angle.
Telescoping arms and stackable pad adapters exist to solve real geometry problems, and they also introduce a new one: an over-extended arm with a tall stack of adapters on it is a lever, and it puts far more bending load on the arm and restraint than a short arm with a flat pad. Use the minimum adapter height that clears the rocker or the running board, and keep the arm as short as the lift point allows. Do the shake test at four to six inches: raise until the tires just leave the ground, stop, set the locks, and push hard on a fender corner. If anything moves, drop it and reset. The Daily and Monthly Checks That Actually Get Skipped
Manufacturer manuals list a daily walkaround, and in fifteen years of doing this we have met very few shops that run it. Here is the version we tell people to actually do, because a short list that gets done beats a long one that doesn’t. Daily: look at both hydraulic hose ends and the cylinder rod for weeping, glance at the equalization cables where they turn over the sheaves for fraying or birdcaging, confirm both arm restraints click when you swing the arms, and check the reservoir sight level. That is ninety seconds for one bay.
Monthly: torque-check every anchor bolt with a calibrated wrench to the manufacturer’s spec, grease the arm pivot pins and carriage slides, cycle the lift to full height empty and listen for even lock engagement on both columns, and inspect the pads for cracking or oil-soaked rubber. Quarterly, check cable tension and adjust if the carriages are not arriving at the same height. Northwest Iowa shops deal with an extra variable — road salt and brine dripping off vehicles all winter, running down the columns and sitting in the base channels. Cables, Sheaves, and Why Both Carriages Must Move Together
Equalization cables are not what holds your vehicle up — the hydraulics do that — but they are what keeps the two carriages level with each other, and level carriages are what make the safety locks engage in the same slot on both columns. When cable tension drifts, one side leads the other. You will notice it as a lift that rises visibly crooked, a lock that catches on one column half a click before the other, or a lift that shudders on the way down. Left alone, the low side starts taking more load, the arms twist slightly, and the restraint gears wear on one corner.
Inspect cables where they wrap the sheaves at the top and bottom of each column, because that is where they fatigue. Look for broken strands, flat spots, kinks, and rust bleeding out from between the strands. A single broken wire is a replace-now signal, not a watch-it signal. Cables are consumables; on a hard-working shop lift running fifteen cars a day they are not a lifetime part. When a Lift Is Telling You to Stop Using It
Some symptoms are annoyances and some are stop-work items, and shops routinely mix the two up. Stop-work: any cracked or spalled concrete radiating from an anchor, any loose anchor that will not hold torque, a restraint that does not engage, a lock pawl that does not drop, a cable with a broken strand, a column that is visibly out of plumb, or a lift that will not hold height with the locks set. Those are not “finish this car first” problems. Tag the lift out and call someone.
Annoyances that still need attention soon: slow descent, a motor that hums before building pressure, a slight lean at full height, a weepy fitting, chewed-up pads. We got a call from a shop whose Challenger two-post had a running motor, full reservoir, and no leaks, and it simply would not lift — that pattern usually means air in the system, a stuck check valve, or a failed pump coupler, and it is a repair, not a replacement. Too many owners assume any hydraulic complaint means buying a new lift. Most of the time it is a few hundred dollars in parts and an afternoon. Building a Safety Habit That Survives a Busy Friday
Procedures fail on the busiest day, which is the only day that matters. The shops we work with that have clean safety records do three things. First, they make the lock-set audible and social — the tech says “locks set” out loud, and anyone in the bay expects to hear it. It sounds like theater until you realize it is the reason nobody walks under an unlocked vehicle. Second, they put the daily checklist on the column itself, laminated, with a grease pencil, and the last tech to close initials it. Not for OSHA. So the next guy knows it happened.
Third, they treat annual inspection as non-negotiable.
