A tire-and-alignment shop owner in northwest Iowa asked us to look at his oldest bay because a tech had refused to work under a vehicle on it, and that refusal turned out to be the smartest thing anyone in that building did all year. The 2 post car lift in question was roughly twenty years old, the safety lock on one column was not engaging cleanly, and the equalizer cables had stretched past adjustment. This walkthrough is how we inspect a two-post — the order we check things in, what we consider a hard stop, and why the brand on the column determines how fast the fix happens.

Start With the Safety Locks, Every Time

The lock system is the only thing between a technician and the ground. Hydraulics hold weight beautifully until a hose fails, a fitting lets go, or a seal blows — and then the mechanical locks are the entire safety story. So that is where every inspection starts. We raise the unit empty, listen for the ratcheting engagement on both columns, and confirm the locks click in unison at each position. If one side is a beat behind the other, something is wrong with the cable, the linkage, or the latch itself.

Then we lower onto the locks and look at how the load sits. On the northwest Iowa tire shop’s machine, the driver-side latch was engaging shallow — the teeth were rounded from years of dropping onto them hard. A worn latch will hold right up until it does not, and the failure mode is sudden. That part is a stocked item on Rotary and Challenger equipment and we had it swapped inside a week. On an orphaned import brand it would have meant a fabricated part or a decommissioned bay. This is where brand history stops being marketing and starts being a business decision: a lock latch you can buy on Tuesday keeps the bay earning on Thursday.

Cables, Chains, and the Slow Failure Nobody Notices

Equalizer cables do not hold the vehicle — the hydraulics do that — but they keep both carriages traveling at the same rate. When they stretch, one side lifts faster than the other and the vehicle sits crooked on the arms. Techs adapt to it gradually, which is exactly the problem. Nobody notices a quarter-inch of drift per year until the day a transmission service on a front-wheel-drive car shifts the center of gravity and the vehicle rocks on the pads.

We check cables for stretch, for broken strands at the sheaves, for corrosion at the terminations, and for proper adjustment at the anchor nuts. If a cable has visible broken wires, it is replaced — no adjustment, no “one more year.” Cables are one of the highest-volume items we ship out of Ames because they are a normal wear part on a machine that lifts thousands of pounds several times a day. On a chain-driven design we look at chain stretch and sprocket wear instead, same logic. A shop doing heavy transmission work should be inspecting these monthly and having them professionally checked annually, which is also what ANSI/ALI guidance calls for. Anchor Bolts and the Concrete Underneath

Anchors are the quietest failure point on a 2 post car lift because you cannot see the part that matters. What you can check is torque, and whether the base plate sits flat with no gap or shimming stack that has worked loose. We torque every anchor to the manufacturer spec at inspection, and if a bolt spins without building torque, that anchor has lost its bite in the concrete and the whole install needs a hard second look.

Concrete spec is typically four inches minimum of 3,000 PSI, fully cured, with no cracks, seams, or expansion joints running under the base plates. We have cored slabs that the owner swore were five inches and found three and a half over fill. A shop in northwest Iowa had a lift anchored eight inches from a control joint — the concrete on that side had begun to spall around two of the bolts. That is a fixable problem if you catch it early and a catastrophic one if you do not. Arms, Pads, and Correct Load Points for Transmission Work

More vehicles come off lifts because of bad arm placement than because of equipment failure. The arms have to land on the manufacturer’s designated lift points, the arm restraints have to engage so the arms cannot swing under load, and the pads have to be the right height for the vehicle’s pinch weld or frame rail. Worn arm restraint gears are extremely common on older machines and they are cheap to replace.

Transmission service makes load points more critical than routine work does. When a tech drops a transmission, several hundred pounds leaves the front of the vehicle at once, and the center of gravity moves rearward — sometimes dramatically on a front-drive car. If the vehicle was already set slightly rear-heavy on the arms, that shift is enough to unload the front pads. We tell shops doing driveline work regularly to set the vehicle deliberately nose-heavy, verify all four pads are fully seated, shake the vehicle before going under it, and use a support stand under the rear when pulling heavy assemblies. Screw pads and drop-end arms help on low vehicles, and telescoping arms give the reach for longer wheelbases. None of it substitutes for the tech actually checking the pads before the vehicle leaves the ground.

Power Unit, Hydraulics, and Diagnosing a Lift That Won’t Rise

The power unit is the least dangerous component and the one that generates the most panicked phone calls. A customer called us about a Challenger two-post that had simply stopped lifting — the motor ran, the reservoir was full, and there was no visible leak anywhere. That combination almost always means the pump is not moving fluid: a stuck check valve, a clogged suction screen, air in the system after a low-fluid episode, or a lowering valve that is not fully seating.

None of those require new equipment. They require someone who knows the hydraulic circuit and an afternoon. What we see too often is an owner assuming a dead machine and starting to shop for a replacement, spending thousands to solve a problem that a seal kit and a screen cleaning would have fixed. On the hydraulic side, our inspection covers fluid level and condition, hose routing and chafe points, fitting weeps, and cylinder rod condition. A rod with pitting will chew seals repeatedly no matter how many kits you install. We also verify the lowering speed and the shutoff bar function. Why the Brand and the Parts Pipeline Are a Safety Issue

People think of brand as a quality question. It is really an availability question, and availability is a safety question. When a lock latch wears out on a Rotary or a Challenger, we pull the part off a shelf. When it wears out on an import brand whose distributor left the market in 2016, the shop faces a choice between shutting the bay down and running the machine one more month with a compromised lock. Every operator says they would shut it down. Not every operator does.

Rotary has been building lifts for roughly a century and supports models long past their production run. Challenger holds up well on commercial duty and its parts move quickly through the distribution network. Those are the brands we carry, and the reason is not loyalty — it is that we have to be able to fix what we sell. A 2 post car lift with no parts pipeline is a depreciating safety hazard, no matter how good the spec sheet looked. Before you buy anything, ask the seller a simple question: what happens in year nine when the cables need replacing?

Building an Inspection Routine That Actually Gets Followed

The best safety program is the one that is short enough to happen. We recommend shops run a thirty-second daily check — look at the cables, listen for clean lock engagement, glance at the floor for fresh fluid, confirm arm restraints are engaging. Monthly, add a torque check on the anchors and a real look at the pads and arm pins. Annually, bring in a qualified inspector for a full ALI-style inspection with documentation. That paperwork matters if an insurer or an OSHA inspector ever asks.
