A quick-lube franchise operator in Marion called us last spring with a problem that had nothing to do with oil changes. He had leased the bay next door, wanted to run seasonal vehicle storage and light service out of it, and had no idea which 2 post car lift model actually fit the building or the budget. He had three quotes in hand, all with different model numbers, all with different capacities, and no way to compare them apples to apples. That is the single most common call we get at Auto Lift Services. So here is the comparison we walked him through — the spec sheets that matter, the model numbers worth knowing, and what the whole project costs from crate to first vehicle in the air.

Start With the Building, Not the Brochure

Every spec comparison we do starts with four numbers from the customer, not from a catalog. Ceiling height under the lowest obstruction — not the peak, the lowest sprinkler head or joist. Concrete thickness and age. Door opening width and height. And the heaviest vehicle that will ever go up. In Marion, that operator had a 12-foot ceiling with a duct run dropping to about 11 feet 4 inches on one side. That single measurement eliminated every overhead model on his quote list and pushed him toward a baseplate configuration, which routes the equalization cables through a floor plate between the columns instead of across a top beam.

Concrete is the other quiet dealbreaker. Most manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb unit, and more for anything heavier. We have cored slabs in eastern Iowa that measured a hair over three inches with no rebar, sitting on fill that had never been compacted properly. That job turned into a cut-and-pour footing before a single anchor went in. If you are looking at a used building, spend the money on a core sample first. It is far cheaper than discovering the problem after your 2 post car lift is bolted down and starting to walk under load.

Symmetric vs. Asymmetric: What the Spec Sheet Will Not Tell You

Symmetric means the columns face each other squarely and the arms are roughly equal length front and rear, so the vehicle sits centered between the posts. Asymmetric rotates the columns about 30 degrees and uses shorter front arms, shifting the vehicle rearward so the driver’s door clears the column. For a quick-lube operation where techs are in and out of cabs constantly, that door-swing clearance is worth real money in daily annoyance avoided. For a shop that lifts long-wheelbase pickups and vans, symmetric handles the weight distribution better.

Plenty of current models split the difference. BendPak’s XPR-10S is a symmetric clear-floor design with an expandable top beam that lets you set up wide or narrow drive-through, and telescoping screw pads that give you real flexibility on pickup frame rails. Rotary’s SPO-series and Challenger’s CL10 line offer asymmetric variants with drop-end arms for low-clearance sports cars. When you compare a 2 post car lift across brands, ignore the marketing labels and look at three numbers: minimum pad height, maximum rise, and arm reach at full extension. Those three tell you what you can actually service. Everything else on the sheet is secondary.

Model Numbers Worth Knowing at 9,000 to 12,000 lb

The 9,000 to 12,000 lb tier is where most independent and quick-lube shops land. We had a customer up north set on a “9LC” — a nine-thousand-pound baseplate unit — because his heaviest vehicle was 6,000 lb and his ceiling capped out at 139 inches. That was a reasonable read of his own needs, and we told him so. Not every shop needs to buy up.

At 10,000 lb, the workhorses are the Rotary SPO10/SPOA10 family, Challenger’s CL10V3, and the BendPak XPR-10 series. All three will lift essentially every half-ton pickup, crossover and sedan that rolls through a Marion bay. Step to 12,000 lb and you gain margin for three-quarter-ton trucks with plow gear or service bodies, plus taller columns on most models. The jump in cost between 10K and 12K is smaller than people expect — usually a modest percentage — while the jump from 12K to 15K or 18K is steep because you are into different column steel, different cylinders, and different anchor requirements. Our advice for a shop that occasionally sees a loaded Super Duty: buy the 12,000 lb version of your chosen 2 post car lift and stop there.

A Real Cost Breakdown: Lift Through Install

Here is the honest structure of a project budget, in tiers rather than exact figures because freight and concrete swing wildly. The lift itself for a quality 10,000 lb clear-floor model sits in the low-to-mid four figures for entry brands and the mid-four to low-five figures for commercial-grade Rotary and Challenger units. Freight to eastern Iowa on a two-post crate typically runs several hundred dollars, more if you need a liftgate because you do not have a forklift.

Installation is where quotes diverge most. A straightforward bolt-down on good concrete with power already at the column location is a half-day job for two techs. Add electrical — a dedicated 220V single-phase circuit is the norm — and you are bringing in an electrician for a few hundred to a couple thousand depending on panel distance and whether your service has capacity. Concrete remediation, if a core sample comes back thin, is the wild card: a cut-and-pour footing pad under each column runs into the low four figures with cure time before anchoring. The Marion operator’s total came in roughly 40 percent above the sticker price of the equipment once freight, electrical, and a permit were included. That is a normal ratio, and it is exactly why we quote the whole project instead of just the crate.

Seasonal Storage Changes the Math

The storage side of that Marion business is worth calling out, because it is where a two-post is the wrong tool and people find out too late. If your plan is to park a classic or a convertible on a lift for five months and roll a second vehicle underneath, you want a four-post. Two-post arms hold a vehicle by its frame or pinch welds, and leaving suspension unloaded for months at a time is hard on bushings and tires. It also ties up your service lift for the entire season.

What we recommended instead: one two-post in the service bay for actual work, and a four-post parking unit for the storage revenue. The four-post drives on, needs no anchoring in most residential-grade installs, and can be fitted with a caster kit so you can reposition it in the off-season. That split cost him more up front than a single lift, but it let him bill storage and service simultaneously instead of choosing. If your budget only supports one machine and service is the priority, the two-post wins every time — just do not sell storage against it. We had a shop in central Iowa try that for one winter and spend the following spring apologizing to customers about flat-spotted tires.

Overhead vs. Baseplate for a Low-Ceiling Bay

Once ceiling height forced the baseplate decision in Marion, the follow-up question was whether he was giving something up. Honestly, a little. Overhead models keep the floor completely clear, which matters if you roll transmission jacks and drain carts across the bay constantly. Baseplate designs put a low steel cover between the columns carrying the equalization cables and hydraulic line, and while it is only an inch or two tall with a tapered ramp, you will feel it with a floor jack.

The tradeoff is real vertical clearance. A baseplate unit gives you the full rise without a crossbeam eating 12 to 16 inches of headroom, so a shop with an 11-foot ceiling can still put a pickup high enough to stand under. Baseplate models also cost slightly less in most product lines and are simpler to install in buildings with obstructed ceilings. What they demand is cleanliness — that cable trough collects grit and if you ignore it for years, sheave wear and cable fray follow. We stock replacement equalization cables and sheaves for every major line, and the number of baseplate cable calls we take that trace back to a trough full of brake dust is high. Whichever configuration you choose, put the cable inspection on a quarterly checklist and your 2 post car lift will outlast the building’s roof.

What We Verify Before We Bolt Anything Down

Our install crews carry a short verification list and we run it every time, on every 2 post car lift we set, whether it is a home garage in Story County or a franchise bay in Marion. Slab core or hammer-drill depth check at each anchor location. Column plumb within manufacturer tolerance in both axes. Torque values on every anchor, recorded. Full-cycle test with no load, then with a known vehicle weight, checking that both carriages arrive at the same height and that every lock engages audibly at every notch.

Then we hand over the manual and walk the owner through the daily and monthly checks himself. Daily: look at the cables, listen for the locks, check for fluid on the floor. Monthly: grease the arm pins, inspect the arm restraint gears, check hydraulic fluid level. Annually: a full ALI-style inspection, which we perform across Iowa and into Illinois and Nebraska. That inspection is not just liability paperwork — it is how we catch a frayed cable strand or a cracked weld before it becomes a dropped vehicle.
