We got a call last month from a third-generation shop outside Waterloo — grandfather started it doing farm truck repair, dad added a body bay, and now the grandson is running the driveline and exhaust side, pulling U-joints and swapping cats and mufflers under Dually trucks and full-size pickups all day. He wanted to know, plainly, whether he should stick with the symmetric lift his grandfather bought used decades ago or step up to an asymmetric arm setup. What Symmetric Actually Means Underneath a Truck

On a true symmetric 2 post car lift, all four arms are the same length and swing out evenly from the columns, so the vehicle sits centered between the posts with the driver door and passenger door opening the same distance from each column. That geometry was designed decades ago mostly around passenger cars, where door clearance mattered more than reaching a driveshaft. For a driveline and exhaust bay running full-size pickups and Dually trucks, that centered stance can put a column closer to the front tire than you’d like, and it does nothing extra to help you get a swing arm or transmission jack under the middle of the truck.

The upside of symmetric arms is straightforward: they’re simpler, usually a little cheaper, and fine for general service, oil changes, and brake work where you’re not fighting for space under the center of the vehicle. If your bay is mostly doing tire rotations and general maintenance alongside occasional exhaust jobs, a symmetric 2 post car lift still gets the job done. But once exhaust and driveline become the daily bread and butter, the front columns being centered under the front doors instead of shifted forward starts to cost you real working room, especially with longer trucks where the front axle sits well back from the bumper.

Asymmetric Geometry and Real Working Clearance

Asymmetric arms are shorter on the front pair and longer on the rear pair, which shifts the whole vehicle rearward relative to the columns. That extra offset — often 25 to 35 percent more front clearance versus rear — opens up the space in front of the columns where a technician needs to swing a floor jack, roll in a transmission jack, or maneuver an exhaust system out from under the frame rails. For a shop pulling cats, mufflers, and full exhaust systems on trucks all day, that difference between symmetric and asymmetric arm reach shows up in every single job, not just the occasional tight one.

We’ve watched techs at Iowa shops fight a symmetric setup for years simply because that’s what was installed when the building was built, not because anyone chose it for the work being done. Asymmetric arms also tend to open front door swing further since the front columns sit farther forward relative to the cab, which matters when you’re getting in and out of a truck fifteen times a shift. If your daily work is driveline and exhaust rather than general passenger car service, asymmetric geometry on a 2 post car lift is almost always the better long-term call, even if the upfront cost is a bit higher than a bare-bones symmetric unit.

Capacity and Column Height for Full-Size Trucks

Most of the calls we get for driveline-heavy shops land in the 9,000 to 12,000 pound range, and that’s not overkill — a Dually truck with a bed full of tools and a full tank easily pushes toward the top of that window. We’ve quoted 9K units for shops that specifically said they’d be lifting Dually trucks daily, and we always ask about ceiling height first, because a 12-foot ceiling handles most consumer lifts fine but anything under that needs a low-overhead-bar layout instead of a traditional overhead beam. Column height itself typically runs in the 130 to 140 inch range for a standard duty commercial 2 post car lift, tall enough to clear full-size trucks with towing mirrors folded.

Arm reach on the rear pair usually extends out to around 47 to 51 inches fully extended, which is what actually lets you get the pads under the rear frame rail of a longer truck without the arm running out of travel. We spec this out every time before quoting, because guessing on arm length is how a shop ends up with a lift that technically holds the weight but can’t physically reach the lift points on the trucks they actually work on.

Concrete, Pad Thickness, and What We Check Before We Quote

Before we ever price a 2 post car lift installation, we ask about the concrete — thickness, whether there’s rebar, whether there’s in-floor heat, and whether a lift was there previously. A 10,000 pound two-post anchored into thin or cracked slab is a liability no matter how good the arm geometry is. We’ve had jobs where the customer needed old lifts pulled and pads cut out and repoured before new lifts could even go in, and that concrete work has to happen before arm choice or capacity even enters the conversation.

We also ask whether there’s a forklift on site for unloading freight, because that changes how we schedule the install day. Most family shops don’t have one, and that’s fine — we plan around it. None of this changes which arm style you pick, but it does change how smoothly your install day goes, and we’d rather answer these questions upfront than leave a family shop guessing.

Symmetric vs Asymmetric: Making the Call for Your Bay

If we’re being straight with a shop owner, the decision usually comes down to what’s actually rolling through the bay day to day. A general repair shop doing brakes, tires, oil changes, and the occasional exhaust job can run a symmetric 2 post car lift for years without ever feeling limited. A shop where exhaust and driveline work is the main event — pulling driveshafts, dropping transmissions, swapping full exhaust systems on trucks — is going to feel the extra front clearance of asymmetric arms almost every single day, and that clearance adds up to real time saved across a year of jobs.

We’d also point out that arm style isn’t the only variable.
