A service manager at a dealership group in northern Missouri called us last spring with a specific problem: his techs were doing differential fluid service on three-quarter-ton trucks, and the 2 post car lift in the back bay had arms that wouldn’t reach the frame pickup points without stacking blocks. He wanted numbers, not sales talk — pad heights, arm reach, column spacing, drive-through width, concrete depth, and whether the replacement he was looking at carried a current ALI Gold label. What ALI Gold Certification Actually Certifies

ALI Gold is not a marketing sticker. The Automotive Lift Institute runs a third-party program where an independent lab tests a specific lift model against the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard — structural load testing, overload testing, safety-lock function, anchor requirements, and the completeness of the installation and operation manuals. If a model passes, that model number gets a gold certification label with a serial-traceable mark. The critical detail most buyers miss: certification applies to a model and capacity, not to a brand. A manufacturer can build one certified line and one uncertified budget line under the same logo.

Why the service manager cared: his insurance carrier and the group’s safety auditor both asked for certification documentation on shop equipment, and an OSHA inspection at a sister store had flagged a non-certified unit. For any commercial shop, we push toward certified models — Rotary and Challenger both carry Gold labels across their mainstream two-post lines. For a hobby garage where nobody’s carrier is asking, an uncertified unit isn’t automatically dangerous, but you lose the independent verification that the columns, carriages, and locks were actually load-tested to a published standard. When you’re standing under a 7,800 lb crew cab pulling a differential cover, that verification is worth something. We keep the ALI directory bookmarked and check model numbers before we quote, because a mislabeled spec sheet is a real thing in this industry.

Concrete: The Spec That Kills More Installs Than Anything Else

Every two-post manual gives a minimum concrete spec, and it’s usually 4 to 6 inches of 3,000 PSI minimum, cured 28 days, with a stated minimum distance from the anchor to any slab edge, expansion joint, or saw cut. Baseplate models generally require a bit more slab because the load path is different from a clearfloor overhead design. Those numbers are not padding. The anchors transfer overturning moment into the slab, and a thin or cracked pour lets the column base creep under load.

The northern Missouri shop had an older pour with no documentation. We do the same thing every time in that situation: core-drill or hammer-test a couple of spots, measure actual thickness, and check for rebar or mesh. Their back bay measured a hair over 4 inches with visible cracking near a floor drain — which meant either relocating the lift to a better section of slab or cutting out and pouring a new footing pad. We’ve done dozens of those footing pads across central Iowa. Typically it’s a 4-by-6-foot cut per column, 8 to 10 inches deep, 4,000 PSI, tied with rebar, cured before anchoring. It adds cost and about a week, but it’s cheaper than replacing a slab after a column shifts. One more note from a lead we handled in Missouri: the buyer thought his floor was 5 inches, and it measured closer to 3.5 in half the bay. Measure. Don’t assume.

Arm Geometry, Pad Height, and Truck Frames

This is what actually stopped his differential service work. Two-post arms come in a few flavors: symmetric with equal-length arms and columns facing each other, asymmetric with short front and long rear arms and rotated columns, and versymmetric designs that let you run either way. For a dealership doing light trucks, arm reach and minimum pad height matter more than capacity. Drop-end or triple-telescoping arms bring the pad down to roughly 3.5 to 4.5 inches, which matters for lowered cars, and extend far enough to reach a long-wheelbase frame rail.

The dimensions we look at on every quote: minimum pad height, maximum pad height with screw-up extensions, front arm reach short and long, rear arm reach short and long, and the lifting carriage travel. A 10,000 lb model with a 72-inch max rise gets a truck frame to about 6 feet — plenty to drain a rear diff and drop a transfer case, but tight for a tall tech working overhead on a lifted 3/4-ton. Stacking pucks or blocks to reach frame points is a bad habit that shows up as pad slippage. If your arms don’t reach, the fix is different arms or a different lift, not more blocks. Overhead vs. Baseplate: Ceiling Height Math

The choice between a clearfloor overhead model and a baseplate model comes down to one dimension: usable ceiling height. Overhead two-post lifts run the equalizer cables and hydraulic line through a top beam, which means a total column-plus-beam height typically in the 12-foot range, and the manual will specify minimum ceiling. If you have an 11-foot ceiling and want to raise a full-size SUV, the math doesn’t work — the roof hits the beam before the wheels clear your working height.

Baseplate designs move all that plumbing into a low channel across the floor, so column height drops and you can fit under a lower ceiling. The tradeoff is a bump you drive over, which is a nuisance if you roll transmission jacks and oil drains through that bay all day. We had a customer in North Dakota with a 139-inch maximum height who landed on a baseplate for exactly this reason, and another in the Des Moines metro with an 11-to-12-foot ceiling who did the same. For the Missouri dealership, ceiling was 14 feet clear, so overhead was the easy answer — cleaner floor, better workflow, and the overhead shutoff bar protects the roofline of tall vehicles. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak: lights, ductwork, garage door tracks, and sprinkler heads all count.

Capacity Ratings and What 10,000 lb Really Means

Capacity on a 2 post car lift is a total rating, and it assumes reasonable load distribution across four arms. A 10,000 lb unit handles the vast majority of passenger cars, half-tons, and most three-quarter-tons unloaded. Once you’re regularly putting a loaded dually, a service van with a full body, or a 3/4-ton with a plow on it, you want 12,000 or 15,000 lb columns — and the arm geometry on those larger units is built for longer wheelbases too.

We asked the dealership what the heaviest vehicle through that bay actually was. Answer: an F-250 crew cab diesel, roughly 7,800 lb dry. A 10,000 lb unit covers that with margin, but they also occasionally take in a 1-ton box van from a fleet account, and that pushed the recommendation to a 12,000 lb model. We see the opposite mistake too — a home shop buying 12,000 lb capacity for a vehicle that weighs under 6,000 lb, spending more and eating more floor space than necessary. Right-sizing saves money on both ends. Capacity also interacts with concrete: heavier lifts require deeper slab and larger anchors, so an overspec’d lift can turn a bolt-down job into a concrete job. Diagnosing a 2 Post Car Lift That Won’t Lift

A shop we work with called about a Challenger two-post where the motor ran, the reservoir had fluid, and nothing leaked — but the carriages wouldn’t move. That’s a common enough symptom that we can usually narrow it over the phone. First check: is the power unit actually building pressure, or is it cavitating? Low fluid that still looks fine in the sight window, a clogged suction filter, or a pickup tube pulling air will all give you a running motor and no lift.

Second check: the lowering valve or release solenoid stuck partially open, which means the pump moves oil in a circle instead of into the cylinder. Third: velocity fuses or flow restrictors in the lines that have tripped. Fourth: a bypass or relief valve set wrong or fouled with debris after a fluid change with the wrong oil. And fifth, on cable-equalized designs, badly worn or seized sheaves and slack cables can bind the carriage enough that the pump stalls against it. That Challenger turned out to be a lowering valve that wasn’t seating — a small part, same-day ship. Installation, Anchors, and the Annual Inspection You Should Be Doing

Installing a 2 post car lift correctly is mostly about layout and anchoring. We chalk the column locations off the bay centerline, verify plumb in two planes, drill to the anchor manufacturer’s embedment depth, blow out the holes, set the wedge anchors, and torque to spec — then re-torque after the first few cycles because concrete relaxes. Shimming is allowed within limits stated in the manual, usually up to a stack thickness the manufacturer specifies, and shims must be under the full baseplate, not just a corner. Getting the columns square to each other and level to each other matters more than being level to the floor, because that’s what keeps carriage travel and cable equalization even.

After installation, ALI and every manufacturer manual call for a documented annual inspection by a qualified inspector, plus daily and monthly operator checks. On a 2 post car lift, that means anchor torque, safety lock engagement at every position, cable tension and condition, arm restraint function, hose and fitting condition, pad wear, and column weld inspection.
