Ceiling height is the first number that kills a deal
Every quote conversation starts here, and it is where most online orders go wrong. A clearfloor overhead model needs total overhead room for the columns plus the crossbeam plus the shutoff bar. On a typical 10,000 lb symmetric unit, the column height runs around 145 to 150 inches and the overhead assembly adds a few more. That means a shop with 11 feet 4 inches to the joist is not installing an overhead model, period — no amount of optimism changes the math. The Cedar Falls garage measured 136 inches clear, which put them squarely in baseplate territory.
Baseplate designs move the hydraulic lines and equalization cables down into a low floor plate between the columns, so the columns can stand shorter. Some baseplate units come in under 120 inches of column height, which fits almost any older Iowa shop building. The tradeoff is a raised plate you drive over — usually two to three inches tall with a tapered ramp — and slightly slower cable inspection because the routing is at floor level where it collects grit. For a bay running annual state inspections all day, we usually recommend sweeping that plate weekly. If your ceiling clears 12 feet 6 inches or better, go overhead and enjoy the clean floor. Below that, baseplate is the honest answer, and there is no capacity penalty at 10,000 lb.
Slab thickness, PSI, and the anchor question
Concrete is the second deal-breaker and the one shop owners guess at most often. Manufacturer requirements for a 10,000 lb two-post generally call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least 28 days, with anchors set a safe distance from any expansion joint or slab edge. Four inches is a minimum, not a target. We prefer five to six inches under the column footprints, especially in older buildings where the pour thickness varies by a couple inches across a single bay.
The way we verify it is simple and non-negotiable: we core or hammer-drill a test hole at each intended column location before anything gets anchored. In the Cedar Falls building, the north column location came back at five and a half inches and the south came back at three and three quarters — the slab had been poured in two stages decades apart. We cut and repoured a pair of four-foot-square pads at the thin location, waited out the cure, and then set the columns. That added two weeks to the project and saved them from an anchor pull-out failure with a customer’s vehicle overhead. If your building sits on a floor you did not pour yourself, assume nothing. Anchor torque also matters: we torque to manufacturer spec with a calibrated wrench and re-check after the first month of use, because concrete relaxes slightly around fresh anchors.

ALI Gold — the Automotive Lift Institute’s certification label — is not a marketing sticker the factory prints itself. It means an independent third-party lab tested that exact model against the ANSI/ALI ALCTV safety standard, and that the factory is subject to ongoing audits. The label covers structural load testing, the safety lock system, the overload protection, and the accuracy of the capacity rating. When you see the gold label on the column, you are looking at a unit whose 10,000 lb rating was verified by someone with no financial stake in selling it.
For a shop doing annual state inspections, this matters more than it does for a hobbyist. Your insurance carrier may ask. Your state or municipal inspector may ask. And if a lift-related injury ever happens in your bay, the first question in the room will be whether the equipment was certified and whether it was inspected annually per ALI guidelines. We only stock certified two-post models from Rotary and Challenger for exactly this reason — the price difference against an uncertified import is real but modest, and it disappears entirely the first time you need documentation. Ask any vendor for the specific model’s certification, not just a brand-level claim. Certification applies model by model, and plenty of catalogs list one certified model next to three that are not.
Symmetric versus asymmetric arms in an inspection bay
Symmetric means the columns face each other directly and the four arms are roughly equal length, centering the vehicle between the posts. Asymmetric rotates the columns about 30 degrees and pairs short front arms with long rear arms, sliding the vehicle back so the driver’s door clears the column. For a shop that mostly puts cars and light crossovers on the lift, asymmetric wins on door clearance and matters every single day.
The Cedar Falls shop went a different direction, and it was the right call for their mix. They inspect a lot of three-quarter-ton pickups and full-size vans alongside cars, and heavy trucks need their center of gravity kept between the posts. An asymmetric setup with a long-wheelbase truck pushes weight rearward and makes the front columns work harder than the designer intended. So they chose a symmetric baseplate unit and accepted a tighter door swing on sedans. Some manufacturers split the difference with a versymmetric arm design — telescoping arms that let you configure either way depending on what rolls in. If your work is genuinely mixed, that flexibility is worth paying for. If you inspect 90 percent passenger cars, asymmetric is simpler and cheaper. What you should not do is buy asymmetric and then routinely lift one-ton duallys on it, which is a pattern we see in shops that bought online without asking.
Bay layout: the numbers you actually need before ordering
Here is the measurement list we bring to every site visit, and you can gather all of it yourself in fifteen minutes. Ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, not the peak — light fixtures, ductwork, garage door tracks, and open door panels all count. Bay width wall to wall. Distance from each proposed column location to the nearest wall, expansion joint, and floor drain. Slab thickness at both column locations. Overhead door opening height and the position of the door when fully open. And the height of your tallest regular vehicle plus whatever you need above it to work comfortably.
Practical minimums: a two-post installation wants about 12 feet of bay width for comfortable door swing, though 11 feet works if you are careful. Column-to-column spacing on a 10,000 lb unit typically runs 106 to 116 inches inside the posts. You need three feet of clear working space behind each column for cable and hydraulic service. And you want a power drop within reach of one column — most single-phase units run 208 to 230 volt, 30 amp, and running a new circuit later costs more than doing it during install. In the Cedar Falls bay we ended up shifting the whole layout 22 inches east of where they had chalked it, purely to keep the anchors off an expansion joint. Twenty minutes of measuring prevented a lifetime of a lift sitting in the wrong place.
Annual inspection, lock function, and the parts that wear
ALI guidelines call for a qualified inspection once a year, and for a shop bay we think that is the floor, not the ceiling. Between annual inspections, the daily walkaround is short: listen for both locks clicking through their travel, look at the equalization cables for broken strands or fraying near the sheaves, check the hydraulic lines for weeping at the fittings, and glance at the arm restraint gears to be sure they engage when you set a pad.
The parts that actually wear on a two-post are predictable. Equalization cables stretch and need periodic adjustment, then eventually replacement — plan on a set every seven to ten years in a busy bay, sooner if the shop floor is wet or salty, which describes most of Iowa from November through March. Lock ladders and lock dogs wear at the contact points. Arm restraint pins round off. Rubber pads compress and crack. Power unit motors and pumps are usually the last thing to go, and the most common no-lift call we get is not a dead motor at all — it is a stuck or contaminated lowering valve, which is a cheap fix if you catch it.
