On a symmetric two post lift, both arms on each column extend the same distance and the vehicle sits centered directly between the columns, straddling the runway evenly. Think of a classic drive-through bay design where the car pulls straight in and the columns sit at roughly equal offsets front and rear of the pickup points. This geometry works well for a dealership running mixed sedans and light trucks where you want a predictable, repeatable lift point setup every time a different make comes through, because the arms don’t need dramatic swing to clear the doors.

The tradeoff is door clearance. With a symmetric setup, the front door on a lot of trucks and larger SUVs can catch the column when it swings open, especially in tighter bays. We’ve measured columns set at 10 to 12 feet apart center-to-center on standard-duty units, and if your bay width is under 12 feet you may find yourself training techs to angle the door open before stepping out. For a shop doing general daily maintenance work like oil changes, brake jobs, and tire rotations where the vehicle rarely needs to be positioned off-center, symmetric geometry is simpler to spec, generally lower cost, and easier to train new techs on because there’s one lift point pattern to memorize.

Asymmetric Arms and the 2 Post Car Lift Weight Distribution Problem

Asymmetric arm geometry shifts the vehicle rearward and off-center between the columns, typically around a 25/75 split, so the front arms are shorter and the rear arms are longer. That extra length up front does two things: it gives the driver’s door full clearance to open without hitting the column, and it moves the engine’s weight closer to the rear columns where the lift’s structure handles the load better. For a dealership service manager cycling twenty or thirty vehicles a day, that door clearance alone can shave real seconds off every single lift cycle, and seconds add up across a shift.

The catch is that asymmetric geometry demands more attention to lift point placement. Because the arms aren’t mirrored, a tech who gets sloppy about centering the vehicle can end up loading one column more than the other, and on an older or poorly maintained unit that uneven load accelerates wear on cables, sheaves, and the equalizer system. If you’re running a dealership bay with a mix of half-ton trucks and SUVs, we generally recommend stepping up to a 12,000 lb or higher-capacity two post rather than pushing a 9,000 lb unit to its limit daily — the extra headroom in capacity extends component life significantly.

Concrete matters just as much as the lift itself. Most two-post units need a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete, though we always ask about slab age and rebar before scheduling an install, because anchoring into cracked or thin concrete voids the anchor warranty and creates a genuine safety issue. When we quote a dealership job in northern Missouri or anywhere else in our service area, we ask directly: is there a pit, is the floor level, and is there a forklift on site for unloading freight. On asymmetric lifts, that same tech has to consciously push the vehicle rearward every time, which sounds minor until you’re doing forty vehicles a week and small hesitations compound into real lost time.

We’ve watched dealership service managers solve this by standardizing: pure sedan and light SUV bays get symmetric arms, while bays dedicated to trucks and larger vehicles get asymmetric geometry so door swing isn’t a daily fight. It’s a simple segmentation that costs nothing extra at purchase time but pays off every single shift. If your shop only has room or budget for one bay, we usually steer general daily maintenance shops with a mixed fleet toward asymmetric, because the door clearance benefit applies to more vehicle types than the simplicity benefit of symmetric geometry does.

But if a dealership is asking us to evaluate a unit that’s been run past its safety inspection interval with no documented maintenance, we’re going to recommend replacement, especially in a high-cycle daily maintenance environment where downtime costs more than the lift itself.
