The Numbers That Actually Constrain the Install
Four measurements decide whether a two-post fits: clear ceiling height to the lowest obstruction, slab thickness and quality, available floor width between columns and obstacles, and door opening height for drive-in clearance. At this dealership, the lowest obstruction was a sprinkler main at 11 feet 4 inches, not the 13-foot deck above it. That single number eliminated every overhead-beam configuration in the catalog, because a typical overhead unit needs roughly 12 feet to 12 feet 6 inches for full rise with the crossbar and cutoff bar in place.
Slab thickness came back at 5 to 5.5 inches of good concrete with rebar on 18-inch centers, which is comfortable. Most commercial two-post models specify a minimum of 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and anchor edge distance matters as much as thickness — you generally need at least 6 inches from any joint, edge, or trench. Their bay had a floor drain running down the centerline, which pushed our column layout roughly ten inches off-center to keep anchors in solid material. Width was 22 feet clear, so no issue. But the takeaway is this: the constraint that kills a purchase is almost never the one on the brochure’s first line. It’s a sprinkler pipe or a drain trench nobody thought to measure.
Baseplate Versus Overhead in a Low Bay
With 11 feet 4 inches of clearance, the answer was a baseplate design. On a baseplate model, the equalization cables and hydraulic hose run through a low channel bolted across the floor between the columns, typically 2 to 3 inches tall, instead of overhead through a top beam. That removes the top structure entirely and lets you use nearly the full ceiling height for vehicle rise. In a bay like theirs, that difference translated to roughly 8 to 10 additional inches of usable lift height — the gap between a technician standing upright under a pickup and one working hunched.
The trade-offs are real and we say them out loud. A baseplate channel is a low trip point and a place dirt collects, so it needs sweeping and periodic inspection. Rolling a transmission jack across it requires attention. And on some models the floor plate slightly limits how far in you can pull a low front air dam. Against that, you get zero overhead interference, which matters enormously when you’re lifting tall vehicles — a lifted three-quarter-ton pickup on an overhead unit will hit the cutoff bar long before the lift reaches full travel. For a dealership handling everything from compacts to crew cabs, baseplate was the only configuration that served the whole range. The service manager’s initial online pick had been an overhead model.
Capacity, Column Spread, and Arm Geometry
Their heaviest routine vehicle was a loaded three-quarter-ton pickup at roughly 8,200 pounds curb, so a 10,000 lb rating had margin but not a lot. We recommended stepping to a 12,000 lb model, and here’s why: capacity ratings assume balanced loading across all four arms, and dealership work rarely is. Pull a transmission and the weight distribution shifts hard toward the front pads. Column spread and arm geometry mattered just as much. Asymmetric designs rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees and use unequal arm lengths, which moves the vehicle rearward and lets the driver’s door open — great for cars, less useful for trucks with long wheelbases. Symmetric designs center the vehicle between the columns with equal arms, which handles heavy trucks and vans better but makes door clearance tight on sedans. Drive-thru clearance between columns landed near 100 inches, wide enough for dual-rear-wheel trucks. The Automotive Lift Institute certification label is the single most useful thing on a lift, and it’s routinely misunderstood. ALI Gold certification means an independent third-party lab tested that specific model against ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards — load capacity, stability, structural integrity, the locking system, and the controls — and that the manufacturer’s plant is audited on an ongoing basis. It is not a self-declaration. It is not “meets ALI standards,” which is a phrase uncertified importers love because it means nothing legally.
Why a dealership cares specifically: OSHA references the ALI standard, most manufacturer facility programs require certified lifts, and your insurance carrier may ask for it after an incident. We’ve seen a shop denied coverage on a damaged customer vehicle because the lift under it carried no certification label. Practically, the label lives on the column near the data plate and lists the model and capacity. If you’re looking at a used unit, check whether that exact model appears in ALI’s directory — a certified model line doesn’t automatically mean the unit in front of you was built during a certified production period. Seasonal Storage Rotation on a Two-Post

Commissioning, Torque, and the Paperwork Nobody Keeps
Install day on a 2 post car lift is mostly torque wrench work and patience. Anchors go in to the manufacturer’s specified embedment depth, get torqued to spec, and then get re-checked after the first few load cycles because concrete relaxes slightly. Equalization cable tension gets set, locks get cycled and listened to, and the power unit gets bled until the rise is smooth with no shudder.

We leave a commissioning sheet with anchor torque values, cable tension, plumb readings, and the serial number, and we tell every customer to photograph it and store it somewhere that isn’t a manila folder in a damp parts room. Twelve months later, that sheet is what tells us whether a cable has stretched abnormally or is just settling in. It’s also the first thing an insurance adjuster asks for.
