He started with a bare slab, three project cars, and a growing list of body and driveline work he wanted to tackle himself instead of farming out. Why the pole barn needed a lift

Before the equipment went in, this owner had spent two winters on a creeper. He had a late-1960s fastback needing full underbody media-blast prep and a mid-70s pickup with bent leaf-spring hangers he wanted to weld back straight. Both jobs were possible from the floor. Neither was pleasant. The pattern we see in Ames collectors is the same: it takes two or three real projects on jack stands before the math starts to hurt. Sixty hours of shop time hunched under a floorpan, doing work that would take fifteen with the car at chest height.

Arm restraints on a 2 post car lift – the part nobody thinks about

Arm restraints are the little gear-and-pin mechanism at the base of each swing arm. Their job is to keep the arms from swinging out from under the vehicle when the lift comes down and re-loads them. On a new commercial-grade 2 post car lift they lock crisply. You feel a small click as the arm reaches its position, and it will not swing back out until you lift the pin. On a worn or cheap unit they slip. When they slip, arms walk. When arms walk, the pad slides off the pinch weld. When the pad slides off the pinch weld, cars fall. That is the whole safety story in one sentence.

Our Ames collector had never heard the term before we handed him a printed operator’s manual and walked through it with him during commissioning. During the first ninety days he called once – not about the lift itself but about arm restraint noise. One arm was clicking twice instead of once when he swung it under a widened Bronco. We drove out. A small pebble had gotten wedged into the gear teeth. Two minutes with compressed air fixed it. The lesson we left him with: check the restraint engagement every single time before you raise a car. Not once a week. Every time. Muscle memory is the whole game.

Safety-cam engagement and the audible tell

The other daily-driver safety mechanism on a 2 post car lift is the safety cam – the ratcheting steel dog on each column that catches the carriage as it rises and holds it in place if the hydraulic system ever fails. When the columns are plumb and the equalizer cables are tuned, both cams click into each notch simultaneously. It is a distinct, paired sound: click-click, evenly matched. When one column is out of plumb or one cable is loose, you get a single click followed a quarter second later by the second one. Uneven timing is your earliest warning.

We taught this owner to listen for that timing on the way up and the way down. It is the cheapest and earliest warning sign that something on the lift needs attention. In his case, at the six-month check, we heard exactly that stagger. The passenger-side cable had stretched a small amount – not unusual on a new unit that has cycled a few hundred times – and we retensioned it in ten minutes. Left alone, it would have progressed to a locked carriage on one side and a bind on the other. Owners who never learn the sound tend to keep raising cars until the mechanism forces itself into their attention, which is always more expensive.

First metal work, first oil change, first mistake

Three weeks after install, he started on the fastback’s floorpan. Media-blasting a car in a home shop is a mess – we do not recommend it without containment – but he had rented a booth setup and had the space for it. The lift held the car at exactly the working height he needed for weld-through primer and patch panels. This is where a home collector genuinely gets his money’s worth: no back pain, no ducking, no wondering whether the jack stands are still square. The mistake came later. Doing his first oil change on the pickup, he lifted the truck on the pinch welds – correct – and then tried to swing an arm out with the truck still elevated to reach a better tire angle.

You do not do that. Arms carry load. You lower the vehicle, reposition, and raise it again. He caught himself before anything moved. We got the call that night, half embarrassed, and told him it is the exact rookie error every owner makes once. The correction is muscle memory. After a dozen more raises he stopped even thinking about it. A 2 post car lift trains you if you let it, and the sooner you stop fighting its rules, the sooner it becomes invisible in the shop. That is the goal.

The six-month and one-year check

At six months we re-torqued anchors, retensioned the cable we mentioned earlier, and topped off the hydraulic reservoir with a small amount of ISO 32 that had been consumed by normal cycling. The cylinder rods still looked clean – no scoring, no seep – which is what we expect from a properly aligned column. At one year we did the same walkthrough. Anchors held. Restraints locked crisply on all four arms. Cams paired within a quarter click. The rubber pad tops had compressed by about a millimeter, which is normal, and one of the four was starting to develop a small tear on the edge from a factory-jack lip on the Bronco. We recommended he swap that one pad rather than let it split further.

The single biggest thing he told us at the one-year visit was that the lift changed how much of his own car work he actually finishes. Projects that used to sit for months because he did not feel like getting on his back now get pulled through in a weekend. That is the honest return on a home 2 post car lift for a serious collector – not saved money on labor, though there is some, but saved projects that would otherwise stall out on the floor. Time on the schedule beats dollars on paper.
