The owner’s first question wasn’t “what’s wrong” — it was “is this covered?” That’s the right instinct, and it’s also where most people discover they never actually read the warranty on their 2 post car lift. Coverage on lift equipment is layered, it’s time-limited by component, and almost every manufacturer conditions it on maintenance you’re supposed to be doing daily and documenting. The Three Layers of Coverage Nobody Reads
Warranty documents on lift equipment are almost always tiered, and the headline number on the brochure is the longest tier, not the typical one. Structure — columns, carriages, arms, welded assemblies — usually carries the longest term, commonly five years on commercial-grade equipment and sometimes lifetime on specific weldments. That’s the number the marketing uses. Underneath it sits a shorter tier covering the hydraulic power unit, the motor, the pump, and the cylinder, typically one to two years depending on brand and whether the unit was sold as commercial or residential duty.
Then there’s the third layer, which is where the arguments happen: wear items. Cables, sheaves, lock dogs, arm restraint gears, slider blocks, hoses, seals, and pads are almost universally either excluded outright or covered for ninety days to a year. A frayed cable at year three is not a warranty claim on any 2 post car lift we’ve ever serviced — it’s a maintenance item. That surprises people, but it’s the same logic as brake pads on a new truck. The other thing buyers miss is that residential-labeled equipment installed in a commercial shop often drops to a shorter term or voids entirely. What Actually Voids Coverage on a 2 Post Car Lift
Improper installation is the number one voider, and it’s usually anchors. Manufacturers specify concrete thickness, PSI, cure time, anchor type, embedment depth, torque value, and minimum distance from joints and slab edges. Miss any of those and a claim on a shifted column goes nowhere. We’ve been called out to shops where someone used lag bolts into a four-inch slab that turned out to be three, and there’s no manufacturer on earth who’s going to write that check. Second is overloading. Every unit has a rated capacity and most also have a per-arm distribution limit. Lifting a 12,000 lb truck on a 10,000 lb lift once, successfully, does not mean it was fine.
Third is unauthorized modification — cutting arms, welding on extensions, swapping in a non-OEM power unit, or bypassing a safety lock because it’s chattering. Fourth, and the quiet one, is neglected maintenance. Most warranty language requires periodic inspection per ANSI/ALI standards, and some brands require an annual certified inspection to keep the structural coverage alive. If a cable snaps because it was rusted through and there’s no inspection record anywhere, the claim gets denied on documentation alone even if the part itself had a defect. We tell every customer the same thing: keep a cheap logbook bolted to the column. Date, initials, what you checked. It costs nothing and it’s the single best insurance policy on the equipment.
Daily Maintenance for a Restoration Shop Workflow
Restoration work is different from a quick-lube bay. Cars sit up on the arms for days or weeks while you’re chasing rust, fitting panels, or waiting on parts from three states away. That changes the maintenance profile. Long dwell times under load put sustained stress on the locks and let the cylinder seals sit in one position, and dust from grinding and blasting gets everywhere — especially into sheaves and slider tracks where it turns into grinding paste.
The daily routine is short. Before the first lift of the day, look at the cables where they run over the sheaves and where they terminate at the carriage. You’re looking for broken strands, flat spots, or a cable that’s noticeably looser than its partner. Check the fluid level in the power unit reservoir with the lift fully down. Cycle the lift up a couple of feet, set it on the locks, and listen — both locks should engage with a clean, simultaneous click. Look at the arm restraint pins to confirm they drop into the gear teeth. Eyeball the anchor bolts and the column base for any gap or rust bleed that suggests movement. That’s five minutes. Weekly, wipe the columns and lube the slider blocks per the manual, blow the grinding dust out of the sheave pockets, and check pad rubber for chunks missing. Monthly, torque-check the anchors. Write it all in the log.
The Symptom That Started This: Motor Runs, Nothing Rises
Back to that Nebraska shop. Motor running, fluid present, no leak on the floor — that’s a specific diagnostic path, and it’s rarely a warranty item, which is worth understanding before you file. The most common cause is a lowering valve that’s stuck open or partially open, so the pump is happily pushing fluid straight back to tank. Sometimes it’s a stuck solenoid, sometimes debris under the valve seat, sometimes a bent release linkage from someone leaning on the handle.
Second most common is air in the system or a fluid level that reads fine cold but drops below pickup when the cylinder extends. Third is a failed pump or a sheared coupler between motor and pump — the motor spins beautifully and moves nothing. Fourth, and the one people miss, is a cylinder bypassing internally: the piston seal has failed, so fluid crosses the piston instead of pushing it. No external leak, no puddle, no visible symptom except a lift that hums and sits there. On that particular unit it was the piston seal, and because the lift was seven years old, the cylinder was well outside coverage. We rebuilt it and had them back up in under a week. The lesson isn’t that warranties are useless — it’s that on a mature 2 post car lift, most failures are parts-and-labor conversations, and having a supplier who stocks the parts matters more than the paperwork.
How a Claim Actually Gets Filed and Processed
When something does fall inside coverage, the workflow is predictable if you have the right information ready. Manufacturers want the model number, the serial number off the column data plate, the date of purchase with proof, and the installation date. If a dealer installed it, they want the installer’s information. Then they want a description of the failure with photos — clear ones, in good light, showing the failed component and enough surrounding context to prove where it is on the lift.
From there the claim goes to a technical reviewer who decides whether it’s a defect or a use-and-wear issue. That decision usually takes a few business days on major brands and can stretch longer if they request additional photos or want a field inspection. If approved, the standard outcome is that the manufacturer ships a replacement part — labor is often not covered, or covered only in the first year, or covered at a flat rate that doesn’t reflect what a real service call costs in a rural area. That surprises people every time. The practical move is to route the claim through your supplier rather than filing solo. Annual Inspection: The Requirement That Pays for Itself
ANSI/ALI standards call for an annual inspection by a qualified inspector on commercial lift equipment, and OSHA will reference that standard if they ever look at your shop. Beyond the compliance angle, several manufacturers tie continued structural coverage to a documented annual inspection, and your insurance carrier may ask for it after any incident. For a working restoration shop with employees, this isn’t optional paperwork — it’s the thing that keeps a bad day from becoming a catastrophic one.
What gets checked: anchor torque on every bolt, column plumb, carriage and slider block wear, cable tension and equalization, cable condition end to end including the hidden runs, sheave bearing condition, lock engagement on every position of the ladder, arm restraint function, hydraulic hose condition and routing, cylinder rod condition, power unit mounting and fluid, and all safety decals and rated-capacity labels. An inspector will also verify the lift is being used within its rating and that pads and adapters are the correct ones for the equipment. Most inspections turn up two or three small things — a weeping fitting, a lock that’s lazy on one side, an anchor that’s lost torque. Buying With the Back End in Mind
The best warranty is the one you can actually use, and that comes down to parts availability more than contract language.
